tom, yum yum!. my beautiful bride and i spent three weeks in thailand in 2000. we lived in portugal at the time and when we left the fragrant, delicate beauty of thailand, i brought as much packaged curry, dried coconut milk, a mortar and pestle and other thai essentials as i could pack in my luggage. (difficult to find exotic foodstuffs in portugal.) upon returning to portugal, i cooked thai food for two months straight, as i couldn't get enough of the flavors. i cooked thai every night until my wife said, "enough."
thus far, i can't get 'enough' of thai cuisine ii. i've eaten there three times in one week, an all-time record for me in oneplacefor such a short duration.
there are plenty of thai restaurants in our burg, none of which have come close to the flavors that i have longed for since that sweet, hot time in thailand. until i ventured into tc ii. if the journey of fine food begins when one walks through a door, then i know that the tcii journey will be pleasant, warm, inviting and full of surprises ... my first impression of this wonderful place. but, i wax poetic. the food. my first meal of the week was one of the unbelievably low-priced lunch specials ... i had the mussaman curry. simply delicious. fragrant. sweet. hot. delivering flavors that ping-ponged first from the left hemisphere of my brain then on to the right hemi. inviting me to continue on the journey. walk don't run. my friend ordered the pad khing (ginger chicken). it was different but equal to my dish with its heavenly scents and flavors. we finished the trip with fresh fruit and the coconut tapioca dessert included with the lunch special. something tells me that there are more surprises, more flavors, more discoveries ahead.
second visit with a client and friend two days later - i have the laab gai (chicken salad), one of my all time favorite thai meals. friend has the pad thai noodles. i told the owner, who waited on us, "... this is a test to see if your's can compare favorably to mine ..." i said this jokingly of course, knowing full well that the heart of thailand was beating strongly in this place, and my cooking, no matter how good, would never compare. there was zero comparison. lord or buddah, take me now. this is it. i'm there. i've lived. holy cow, this is good. my friends order, pad thai noodles - equally heavenly.
third trip on the path to nirvana, beautiful bride and i take a side road. i have the sen-mee noodles with the guew teaw soup. bride goes for the laab gai wondering if it's as good as mine ... she laughs, says nothing, eats. she knows it's better than mine, by a long, thai mile. we finish. sated. fond memories swirling. fond memories forming.
highly recommended.
