what a nice change. to be frank, i didn't plan on eating at texaz grill last friday. my son and i had intended to eat at richardson's on a friday night around 7 p.m. but at the so-called "hip" spot there were several open tables, yet only one couple waiting, despite which i was told there would be a 1-hour wait. my 12-year-old son was hungry, and not so concerned about hipness. we didn't want to wait that long to be seated. i remembered that a friend of mine had recommended the texaz grill one night as we were leaving dick's hideaway, saying it was good "home-style comfort food".

when we walked in the door, texaz grill was also crowded with people waiting to be seated, yet we got a table in about 15 minutes. there were business cards and paper armadillos colored by children stapled to the celling, wall to wall hats, antique beer signs and texas memorabilia.

entrees come with choice of salad or cole slaw. we ordered the salad with choice of ranch or honey mustard vinaigrette. it was iceberg lettuce with chopped tomatoes and some diced green olives. it was heaped so high onto the plate that when you took a bite, some fell on the table. we got a basket with a biscuit and a wheat bun. the biscuit is the way to go here, so next time, i'll just ask for them. my son ordered thechickenfried steak. it was smothered with gravy and the mashed potatoes still had some of the skins on. it was the bestchickenfried steak we've ever had, and in my son's words, it was ginormous. this kid, who practically eats me out of house and home, couldn't finish the serving. i ordered the pork chops. they were two huge chops, served southern style, smothered with gravy and mashed potatoes. i bought home one entire pork chop and some potatoes-enough for my lunch the next day.

the service was perfect, and to our surprise, the waitress told us that the manager, michelle, had taken care of our check. what a wonderful surprise! when i came home and decided that i had to write a review of this restaurant, the website http://www.texazgrill.com/ has the prices and the dinner specials. i'll be back with my husband on a wednesday night so he can try the liver and onions. i'll be ordering thechickenfried steak. what a great local, non-chain restaurant run by some very nice people.

unlike most places in arizona where achickenfried steak is a pre-made salisbury steak patty straight off the food service company truck, this one is the real deal. i've had slightly better ones in texas and oklahoma, but this comes very close. the red chili is also the real deal, without beans as the deity intended.

new ownership, still good

so i feel that i need to put this out here. i was skeptical about the new ownership taking over the place and was worried the food would go down hill. it did not. they do now charge for extra gravy with thechickenfried steak which is a shame but its still as good as ever. lets hope it stays that way.

try this place !!!. i drove by this place for almost 30 years .what a mistake !
the food is great , the staff fun and friendly , the service was amazing !
it was nice to walk in the door and be greeted by a professional and not some college cutesy with a hangover. you know the ones i mean . they're everywhere . texting .
real waitresses , real food , great atmosphere , great prices .
for a real treat try thechickenfried steak with a cup of the fantastic texaz chili
poured over the top . what a treat !
the mashed potatoes are some of the best ever. i tried a bit of the brisket and found it top notch as well .

comfort food done right!. this is my favorite place for comfort food. whether it's origin is texas or not this place does everything right. a lot of my favorite places i find that one thing i really like and then that's why i go there. but at the texaz grill i have had at least a dozen different dishes including their famouschickenfried steak, chickenfried turkey, meat loaf, ham and many more.

while they do have a great chef salad on the menu it is primarily comfort food done right. it is a 5 out of 5 star place for me but don't expect tofu on the menu anytime soon.

not another corporate restaurant!. i found the texaz grill a couple years ago while working at 16th st and camelback. my favorite kind of place is exactly this one. kinda scary to walk into. my first thought upon entering was to remember where the exit was in case of fire. the texas memorabilia is everywhere including the ceiling. the lunch menu is small but they aways feature specials. thechickenfried steak puts this place on the map! nearly overhanging the plate with real mashed potatoes and enough corn for color and a fresh baked bisquit begging for melted butter and the ever present honey. when i started going here the lunch was only $6. the lunch costing now $7 or $7.50 is a huge bargain. a recent addition to the place is a great beer called shiner. sold in the black label it is perfect with any dish. the deserts are few but excellent. the bread pudding is a clasic. one day a week the menu features liver and onions. i know, we all tried it as kids and hated the chalky taste and texture. give this dish a chance! this dish has the freshest taste ever putting large chains to shame! whats not to love, pork fat, onions and very tender meat! put your jeans on and try this place!
