pass on this overpriced texmex!. no thank you! i can't believe this place is well reviewed!!! the reviews are the whole reason we decided to try something different! my boyfriend and i are both from mexican-american families, so we seriously enjoy our mexican food. but this place was a bust!

'firstly- i can't remember the last time i had to pay for chips and salsa in a lower scale mexican restaurant.. not that big of a deal, i really had high hopes for this place after reading all of the positive reviews.

secondly, when our food (actually pretty speedily for a busy friday night) came out, my boyfriend's dish-some sort of pork burrito- was literally topped with what he compared to "ball park nacho cheese from a can". he is not at all a picky or judging eater, so i was completely surprised to hear such a negative comment about his food before i began my dish- enchiladas de espinacas. the "home made red pepper sauce" had absolutely no flavor to it. if i had to compare it to another sauce, i would compare it to be similar to spaghetti sauce from a can, and not the good kind.

thirdly, our service was dreadful! the place was packed, and it looked like our server could have been easily overwhelmed, but i seriously saw my server twice! she didn't even bring our food out or get any of our refills! we waited almost twenty minutes before she even came by to drop off our check, and that's literally all she did! no suggestions for dessert or even hanging around long enough for us to request dessert to her, despite our still half full plates (the beans and rice were pretty normal for a mexican place).

i had such positive things to think about this restaurant before going. it was really dissapointing to eat spaghetti sauce and nacho cheese for twenty five dollars. if you're going for drinks and some chips and salsa, this place is perfect for you. but if you're looking for quality mexican food, i seriously recommend you pass on this place and save your money for something more quality.

mediocre. we heard good things but found none of it to be true on our visit. if you want below average k.c. tex-mex from a can then this is the place. the service was horrible and they charged for chips and salsa - which was the only thing good we had.

go for the fish tacos!. ...a friend of mine and i ate here after work on a friday, september 10th. it seems rather off the beaten track on a one way street, but it was well worth finding. i had the tacos puerto vallarta (2 fish tacos, $10.99) the waitress said that they (along with the shrimp tacos) were the house specialty; the menu says that they were voted "best in kansas city", i agree. the tilapia is lightly breaded and seasoned. it was moist and flakey, very well prepared. i would recommend it. the shrimp tacos (2 for $11.99) were apparently so good that my friend wouldn't even let me try them. both dishes are served with a cup of whole pinto beans and spanish rice. we each had a pork tamale ($2.00) (which we were disappointed in; the pork was very dry and stringy) and margaritas ($5.00 each). i liked the margarita but he did not, he thought that there was something carbonated in it and wouldn't drink it. oh well. the queso con jalapenos dip ($3.99) was good, just a slight kick, not too spicy. the bill for two of us came to $38.97 before tax and tip.

i wanted to try a bit of everything so i got the los three amigos which was a tamale, beef burrito, and a chicken soft taco served with beans and rice plus a horchata which i absolutely love. if you like milk and cinnamon, you'll like a horchata.

i thought those were free?!?. great food, friendly service. server brought a basket of chips and salsa as soon as we sat down...didn't ask us if we wanted it, just brought it. and then charged us for it. huh? we didn't say anything because the rest of the experience was so good. just be forewarned.

fresh and fun!. teocali is a fresh slice of mexico near the heart of kansas city. it is convenient to crown center, hospital hill, union station, and highway 71 (bruce r. watkins drive). the vibe is fun and friendly and the food is outstanding. everything looks, feels, smells, and tastes fresh! you won't have a greasy feeling after eating here, but you will enjoy great flavors and smart seasoning. i enjoyed a terrific lunch of tacos puerto vallarta (two soft tilapia tacos, rice, and pinto beans). everything was well portioned and deliciously balanced. the chips and salsa are excellent as well. i'm ready to go back for dinner!
