sake and sushi. really enjoyed syun. not often that you find sushi in a funky old building. nice decor and great selection of rolls, nigiri and sake. service was fast and friendly.
look forward to trying syun again.

50-50. i visited syun after tons of coaxing. i am always a bit scared when it comes to food choice.

anyways, we ordered a beef salad along with halibut and avacado tempura. this was ok. i also ordered some chicken which was awesome but, the sushi was the best that we've tried so far.

i wouldn't recommend the desserts. it's a waste of money.

food is good. you need to visit this place atleast 2-3 times to actually figure out what you really enjoy.

very cozy place in hillsboro downtown. we liked the yakisoba noodles and the sushi rolls. they had vegetarian options and were ready make vegetarian version of any thing we chose on the menu.

this stuff tasted fantastic. the rolls came out quite fast and were quite large. presentation of the end pieces could definitely improve. staff were friendly and the decor/atmosphere was enjoyable. the popular alternative-ish music was out of place, however.

dr j. just a fabulous, fun and authentic little japanese restaurant. it is in funky little downtown hillsboro, set in the basement (and front garden) of one of the original carnegie public library buildings and it does not disappoint, ever. busy, very friendly and welcoming, excellent food and service. my girlfriend is native japanese and she loves our little dates out here - like a slice of home. on a hot summer day sit on the little patio and try the summer cuisine - cold noodles and sushi with a unique chilled sake' or beer - oishii!

great!. super atmosphere, incredible food, stupendous sushi (best sushi rice ever), amazing sakes. one of the best places i've ever eaten, certainly top of the list japanese. our server was terrific. absolutely my new favorite!!!

cozy environment use to be one of our favorite hideaways. the food is very good (not what it was) but very good. service and prices are good.

authentic izakaya. the real deal, my wife was having flashbacks of her time spent in japan. a great japanese style beer hall with lots of little dishes... ideally you have a beer/sake, a little food, another drink, more food... the fish was the freshest i have ever had, the yakitori was beautiful, but their okonomiyaki is now in my top ten list of best things ever eaten. and yes it is better than any of the izakayas i have tried in portland... but yuzu in beaverton has it beat.

good food, good service and good atmosphere. the place was packed when we arrived. we were seated near the door. the decorations were authentic. we had the gyunikku, tempura saba, and the salmon roll. wasn't immpressed with the salmon roll but the other dishes were good and authentic. the green tea was made the right way... reminded me of the green tea i had in the tea ceremony in japan. the waitress was very friendly. overall, we had a great time and we enjoyed the place very much.

new years meal. best japanese food in portland. worth the drive. it even has the smell of tokyo - hard to explain...

outstanding!. if you are looking for authentic japanese food, this is it. they have a wide variety of options that will make your mouth water. don't be afraid to try some of the items that you may not normally see. after taking the dive myself, i can say it was well worth it!
