i am not a lover of sweets, so it is a rare occurrence when i talk about bakeries, pastry shops anddoughnutshops. maybe as an addendum to a meal, but a sweets place in their own right? not often. but when i do.... you can bet the place in question is epic.

suzyq is epic. these are doughnuts as they are supposed to be. as we, dulled and dumbed as we are by tim's and its ilk, forgot how doughnuts can and should be. these are doughnuts that live up to the reason people get excited about doughnuts.

a friend and frequent dining companion introduced me to this place. a tiny little building, set back a bit from the road on the north side of wellington street, you have to keep a a sharp eye out for the place. the building itself reads to me almost as a shack. this is not a criticism. successful food joints operating out of shacks have reliably great food because, in my opinion, they can't trick people into paying for where they're eating rather than what they're eating. at suzyq, floor space is tiny, there is a large glass case showcasing the doughnuts, and they serve coffee and a couple other non-alcoholic beverages. there is nothing to distract from the doughnuts. and really nothing to attract people other than the doughnuts. so the fact that the place is often lined up out the door is a promising tell.

the doughnuts themselves.... old fashioned yeast doughnuts. not too sweet. light. crispy exterior with a hint of saltiness. tender, pillowy interior. soft. yielding. with an impressive rise. these treasures are a good 2 inches tall. the basedoughnutis the same. adoughnutis adoughnutis a doughnut. the variation is in the topping. there are several mainstays that are always there: maple bacon, salty caramel, sugar munkki, dirty chocolate, and a couple of others. and then there are others that make an occasional appearance. hands down (very sticky hands), my favourite is the salty caramel. a medium-dark, salted caramel, on the thinner side, poured over the beautifuldoughnutbase, so every bit ofdoughnutnot resting on the tray is appropriately, but not cloyingly, coated with caramel. it is glossy and glistening, and just looking at it inspires gluttony. my favourite part: the salt crystals. they add a surprising and subtle texture and crunch, not to mention the gorgeous little bursts of salty flavour beyond the background mild saltiness of the caramel.

seriously, everydoughnuti have tried at suzyq has been a delight, but perhaps the best endorsement comes from my out-of-town 8 year old nephew. on a visit last summer, i took him and his twin brother to suzyq early one sunday morning, leaving their parents to sleep in. the boys were impressed. sister and brother-in-law were impressed with what made it back to the house. on a visit in march, the first thing out of my nephew's mouth was a request to get more of those doughnuts. obviously, they had been on his mind. as they should have been.

so, if you have the chance, check out suzyq!

i'm do not have a sweet tooth at all but i find myself fondly reminiscing about their salty carameldoughnutway too often. i've yet to venture to the actual physical location so i can not comment on the service, but the doughnuts are visually just so appealing, the quality and appearance is a reminder of times gone by, not to say they don't have new and innovative flavors!

best ever!. i've been going to suzy q's for a year and a half. i don't remember what my life was like before finding this place, but it must've been rough. i've tried every flavour and i've loved them all. try one with ice-cream in it! it'll make you realize heaven comes in the form of a doughnut. the only problem is the limited space inside and the fact that it's so popular, it's hard figuring out when the best time is to go in if you have a certaindoughnutyou're after. they make batches to fit demand to keep everything fresh, but at the same time it makes keeping up with the heavy flow during major traffic times hard. in the summer they have picnic tables and chairs and live music and it's just an all around positive vibe. doughnuts in hand, smiles all around, can it get any better?

i went in at 7 am on a tuesday and the guy behind the counter would not give me 2 dozen doughnuts. 2 dozen. seriously it was ridiculous. i understand if i were asking for 4 dozen and there was concern that subsequent customers would not be able to get any were they to complete my order. i wanted 6 more and he flat out, rudely, insolently refused to sell them to me. not give me them. sell me them. he insisted i needed to call ahead to get an order larger that 18. there is no signage indicating as much, nor is there indication on the website of said policy. once in the store you are capped regardless of your need.that said i had to explain to a room full of people why the business i was bringing forward as a potential business to work with for our corporate events couldn't meet an order of 2 dozen on short notice. we decided to take our order of 500+ pastries elsewhere. further another charitable campaign i was part of, aghast after hearing this story, decided they too would look else where to meet their pastry needs. again, net loss 500+ doughnuts.i spoke to the manager/owner who agreed it should not have transpired as it did but offered nothing back...not even an apology. i didn't call expecting compensation. i got what i paid for, fair and square. oddly he didn't even seem to care that his overzealous employee cost him 2 large orders over 6 doughnuts. i am aware that most of their patrons will consume/order smaller quantities so this review affects/influences few at best. i am also aware that he probably does not care as he sells out his stock regularly and his product is in high demand. i just find the "whatever" attitude towards customer service beyond the " what can i get you? ok. next! what can i get you? ok. next!" is baffling. i should however note that on other occasions i have received stellar service and the quality of the product is great.thank you sirs. you 6doughnutwar cost your establishment 1000+ doughnuts.

one step inside the tiny store front of suzy q doughnuts, intoxicated by the aroma of sugar and yeast, all effort at self-restraint is wiped away.  you’ll find yourself swooning like a five year-old over fresh doughnuts lining the glass case with colour and gooey delight. for those who love light, yeast risen doughnuts deep fried to perfection then topped with all manner of finger licking goodness, this is a shop to stop.  a place to let your inner child run rampant and renew one’s faith in humanity.   somewhere there’s someone brave enough to take on the corporatedoughnutmakers of the world with a good recipe and a scrappy sense of adventure.  and that’s what i love about the movement of food at the moment; the return of the artisan and the craftsman to the kitchen.  because of them we have a range of delights that smack of home. suzy q brought back colour faded memories of hot summer days spent standing

just okay.. i went here for the second time and i really don't get it. it's basically a so-so yeastdoughnutwith a handful of cereal on top. from the way people are speaking, i was expecting donut plant or voodoo type quality.

suzie q reintroduces the lost art of the yeastdoughnut(not donut) back into fashion. they are light, doughy, nicely leavened and not overly sweet. in fact, you can take the yeast in the dough. as far as designer doughnuts go, they are well worth the $2/each or the $10/6 price tag.

i have to stay away from this place. i have to stay away from suzyq because it is too darned good! i actually avoid westboro now because i know i will want to stop in and see what fantastic creations are at suzyq today. even thedoughnutbatter on a plain, unfussy, glazed, is unique and so much better than the chain tim horton's or even (gasp) krispy kreme doughnuts. i love the maple bacon, the raspberry torte, the moccha, and anything with caramel in it. love, love, love. i accidentally spread the word at work and now occasionally, i arrive to find suzyq boxes in the kitchen. please keep on making these fabulous treats. don't expand because then attention to quality will decrease and these are so amazing now, i hope they never change. great job, suzyq!

i love you, suzyq!. i've heard from different people that the only gooddoughnuthere is the maple bacon so i was on my way to try that one. the line was out the door and into the parking lot. the interior was extremely small so only 5 or 6 customers could fit in there at a time. after a 15 minute wait an employee came out with a tray of fresh sugar doughnuts to pass out to all the people who were waiting in line! now that is good business. if anyone was getting impatient that would definitely leave them with a good taste in their mouth.
it was $2 for onedoughnutor $10 for a half dozen so i got a half dozen to share the love with my family.
i have it on good authority that the dirty chocolate, sugar monkey, toasted coconut and maple bacon are amazing. apparently the london fogdoughnutwas not as tea-like as my partner in crime would have expected but still good.

meh.... well i'm in the minority but i find these doughnuts too heavy and messy for my liking. its exactly the same batter with different toppings. i was really looking forward to the cola flavoureddoughnutbut all i was left with was that same heavydoughnutwith bizarre sugar all over my shirt. in retrospect, given that i need to lose (more than) a few pounds and watch my sugar intake no big loss for me.
