so i ordered from sushi kuni a couple weeks ago from skip the dishes, was craving some sushi and i wanted to try a different place. we got veggie tempura, shrimp tempura and i got tuna and salmon sashimi and my husband got a couple rolls. i have to say it was very good. so yesterday i had a craving for seafood and i thought of sushi kuni right away and i would be dining alone, so i ordered the veggie tempura and shrimp tempura and the same sashimi, it was wonderful, the pieces of fish were plump and tender and melted in my mouth just like it should. the tempura shrimp are big yet light and the veggie tempura has a great selection in it for veggies. i look forward to visiting therestaurantsoon to try other things.

finally went and ate in therestaurantlast night for my birthday. i had called to see if i needed a reservation and she suggested i make one because it can be busy, so i did. walked in and it wasnt busy at all. waited for my friends to show up and we ordered, i got 9 pieces of sashimi, it was so good, big thick pieces of fish, so yummy! and i got shrimp tempura, veggie tempura and i wanted to try the calamari, it all came out fast and hot. calamari wasnt what i thought it was going to be, it was sitting in a sauce so we had to eat it fast because it was becoming soggy. everyone elses rolls came out fast except for my boyfriends, the waitress missed one roll and when he brought it up to her she seemed pissed off a bit. she was very pleasant, like she didnt want to be working. we were the last ones to leave, went to pay and they just seemed not interested in saying good bye and thank you, which i find to be rude, most sushi places the chefs will say thank you when you leave but they didnt. we dropped a 100$ alittle more smiles and a more welcoming atmosphere would be nice. thats my only beef.

a year ago: in restaurant, food service was horrid. after being seated, it took about 20 minutes for a server to be assigned to us. at the time, there were only 2 other small tables and 2 servers on duty. after ordering, the wait time for food was about 35-40 minutes. however, the white dragon role was amazing. the quality of sushi was great. we then opted to use skip not to long after and was pleased.

today: we used skip to order. we were extremely disappointed with service and taste. we ordered 3 special roles and only received 2. we called therestaurantand apparently they had forgotten to pack the last roll with our order and said the skip courier should have told us. we're kind of glad that they did forget because the sushi is subpar from what it use to be. we ordered an alaskan roll (taste was not consistent throughout), a sea dragon roll (very fishy), and a t.n.t roll (not received). we will definitely not be returning.

just awful. i have to admit that my husband and i were huge fans of shogun, but when we discovered that it had been bought out and reopened as sushi kuni, we thought we'd give it a try. we had certain favorites we often ordered at shogun and decided to try those instead of the sushi.

big mistake.

the "hibachi chicken" was laughable--it was like something from a school lunch program, with soggy vegetables, tough chicken, and drowning in a teriyaki-style sauce.

the shrimp tempura tasted like it had been purchased from somerestaurantsupplier and re-heated. the batter was panko-laden and had an off flavor; but the worst part was that the shrimp had not been properly cleaned and still had its intestinal track intact. panko and poop is not a great combination.

we will never go here again.

great food great service!. may 5th was the first day i had been to sushi kuni since the reopening from shogun. i went in with my husband to try some dishes that were my favorites from shogun, as well as experimenting with new ones.
i would have to say that simple changes have made the restaurant's ambiance totally different and fresh.
the menu is full of rolls from traditional, to new fusion styles that have not yet been introduced to the grand rapids area.
the entree i ordered (chicken teriyaki) was delicious as well as aesthetically pleasing. the intricate details they put into each meal seemed unreal for the price. the rolls i ordered, which were recommended from my waitress were the kuni roll and the no name roll, and they were so tasty!

as for the review from gr diner , i don't understand what they are talking about, because one of the dishes sushi kuni does not serve is hibachi dishes (as i am looking at the take out menu). i also tried to order a hibachi dinner, but instead was referred to a teriyaki dinner instead. they are probably mistaken from the chicken teriyaki they ordered, which would be cooked in teriyaki sauce. but to each, their own.
to summarize, i enjoyed shogun very much, and was sad to see it go, but am happy to find a great newrestaurantto enjoy my sushi. i really like sushi kuni and i will be going back soon with family and friends!

after visiting most of the sushi restaurants in the city sushi kuni was one of the last on our lists and seemed to have pretty decent reviews.

we finally decided to come here for a nice sushi dinner. so we ordered a combination plate each and a few rolls to share. as well as some assorted tempura and a pot of green tea to share.

one of the rolls was the salmon bakudan. this was the smallest roll out of the rolls we ordered. the tiniest bakudan i've ever seen. price was $6.50. not worth the price whatsoever. i've had bigger bakudan rolls at every otherrestaurantand more often than not, it's cheaper or very similar in price.

another roll was the tnt roll. which was mediocre at best. much better at kenko niwa on corydon.

another was the kamikaze roll. which was a giant roll. with lots of filling. but covered in a terrible unagi sauce. it literally tasted like rotten fish. we each had 1 piece of the roll and chucked it.

other rolls included dynamite, yum yum, shitake avocado, and california. all of which were good but nothing to write home about.

we also shared a shrimp and vegetable tempura which was probably the best part of the meal.

the green tea for 2 people was just a pot with the cheapest bulk green tea bag from luckys supermarket you could find. most places are at least loose leaf.

all of this coming in at over $80.

service was also sub par. no refill on our tea was offered.

the combination plate also included dessert. which ended up being vanilla ice cream with chocolate nesquik poured over top.

and last but not least. one of the sushi "chefs" was coughing and sneezing all over the place and never once did i see him washing his hands.

i am sad about this overall experience as we both had such high expectations based on other reviews. i would pass on this place and go somewhere else next time for sure. especially for the price we ended up paying. we will not be back.

i'd say the best sushis i've ever tried. i've been going to thisrestaurantfor about 6 years now. initially, 6 years ago, the prices were really good, but at some point they started to go up which was very frustrating for me, as it was the only sushi place i went to. now, i go to other sushi restaurants more often than sushi kuni, less good and less expensive, but their sushis are still super delicious and from time to time, i come there again.

my all-time favourite sushi place. the sushi is delicious, a great variety of rolls, lots to choose from, always fresh and never too greasy, or overpowering in anyway . the prices are very reasonable, honestly they could be as high the more expensive places like wasabi, but you get great food for a great price. the service is always kind, friendly, and quick. therestaurantitself is sort of small, but lots of natural light from the big windows that over look provencher. it is clean, and simple but nicely decorated. the chefs work at the sushi bar, so you can see that your food is being created in a clean environment. whenever it's been awhile since i've eaten there, i am always blown away by how good it is, and i wonder why i ever order from other places. i recommend the sue roll, tnt roll, dragon roll, and honestly anything else because it's all sooooooo tasty!

sushi was good and cheap but the service was disappointing. from the reviews, i had really high hopes for this place, but our waitress hardly cracked a smile. i had the yam roll and crunch roll, which were both very good. the yam had lots of filling and the crunch was also pretty good, but i've also had better. therestaurantis clean, open, and not too small which was nice. i tried this place as it was closer than another sushi place i recently discovered and love, but i'll likely stick to thatrestaurantand not come back to sushi kuni.

they call themselves a japanese fusionrestaurantand five years ago moved into the space that used to be shogun. enter this establishment and you are immediately struck by the lovely ambiance. the lighting is dim and the decor subtle and tasteful. the place is divided into two areas, this row of booths and small tables upon entry, and another dining area with a few larger tables, a few booths, and the sushi bar. the menu features korean dishes, sushi, and asian fusion, so there are choices galore. sometimes this style ofrestauranttries to be too many things to too many people but we think it works here overall. and we started with tempura and dumplings. the shrimp tempura was a little bland but the dumplings (beef gyoza) were great. the sauce enhanced the flavor of these perfectly prepared and not overly fried dumplings. so o n to the entrees. two of us there today are huge fans of udon, those thick, chewy japanese noodles, so two dishes soon arrived ~ vegetable udon and spicy seafood udon. the mildly flavored broth in the vegetable dish was excellent and the spiciness of the seafood dish broth slowly built up while eating. both are classic dishes well prepared, and the noodles had the perfect, chewy texture we hoped for. chef's choice sushi was our third dish, and it was fine although not as fresh or well-cut as that found at maru. the soundtrack playing was really interesting and we couldn't quite figure it out. it was completely instrumental and each of us recognized different tunes ranging from "pure imagination" from willy wonka, a theme song from lord of the rings, a praise chorus worship tune, and a metallica hit. it was a unique and strange soundtrack for our lunchtime dining :-) but o ur major complaint was that the overhead light at our booth was disconcertingly bright and not centered over the table so it only bothered the person it shone upon. find them on facebook but they haven't posted since november of 2014. and their website at sushikuni.net is h
