so iorderedfrom sushi kuni a couple weeks ago from skip the dishes, was craving some sushi and i wanted to try a different place. we got veggie tempura, shrimp tempura and i got tuna and salmon sashimi and my husband got a couple rolls. i have to say it was very good. so yesterday i had a craving for seafood and i thought of sushi kuni right away and i would be dining alone, so iorderedthe veggie tempura and shrimp tempura and the same sashimi, it was wonderful, the pieces of fish were plump and tender and melted in my mouth just like it should. the tempura shrimp are big yet light and the veggie tempura has a great selection in it for veggies. i look forward to visiting the restaurant soon to try other things.

finally went and ate in the restaurant last night for my birthday. i had called to see if i needed a reservation and she suggested i make one because it can be busy, so i did. walked in and it wasnt busy at all. waited for my friends to show up and we ordered, i got 9 pieces of sashimi, it was so good, big thick pieces of fish, so yummy! and i got shrimp tempura, veggie tempura and i wanted to try the calamari, it all came out fast and hot. calamari wasnt what i thought it was going to be, it was sitting in a sauce so we had to eat it fast because it was becoming soggy. everyone elses rolls came out fast except for my boyfriends, the waitress missed one roll and when he brought it up to her she seemed pissed off a bit. she was very pleasant, like she didnt want to be working. we were the last ones to leave, went to pay and they just seemed not interested in saying good bye and thank you, which i find to be rude, most sushi places the chefs will say thank you when you leave but they didnt. we dropped a 100$ alittle more smiles and a more welcoming atmosphere would be nice. thats my only beef.

what is wrong with you people?!. this was the worst sushi i've ever had. i read the reviews on yelp and chose it. i onlyorderednigiri, as i always do anywhere, and it was awful. yellowtail is my favorite, and i left it. these reviews lead me to believe that grand rapidians don't know sushi!! or only order salmon & tuna rolls. further, when you order 10 pieces of nigiri, then leave 5 and the waitress says, "oh you're full? would you like to take it home?" and you say, "no, thank you," something is wrong. bad service, too. i paid for a terrible meal. won't ever go back. try kumo in kalamazoo...even on the $1 days, it's excellent.

a year ago: in restaurant, food service was horrid. after being seated, it took about 20 minutes for a server to be assigned to us. at the time, there were only 2 other small tables and 2 servers on duty. after ordering, the wait time for food was about 35-40 minutes. however, the white dragon role was amazing. the quality of sushi was great. we then opted to use skip not to long after and was pleased.

today: we used skip to order. we were extremely disappointed with service and taste. weordered3 special roles and only received 2. we called the restaurant and apparently they had forgotten to pack the last roll with our order and said the skip courier should have told us. we're kind of glad that they did forget because the sushi is subpar from what it use to be. weorderedan alaskan roll (taste was not consistent throughout), a sea dragon roll (very fishy), and a t.n.t roll (not received). we will definitely not be returning.

just awful. i have to admit that my husband and i were huge fans of shogun, but when we discovered that it had been bought out and reopened as sushi kuni, we thought we'd give it a try. we had certain favorites we oftenorderedat shogun and decided to try those instead of the sushi.

big mistake.

the "hibachi chicken" was laughable--it was like something from a school lunch program, with soggy vegetables, tough chicken, and drowning in a teriyaki-style sauce.

the shrimp tempura tasted like it had been purchased from some restaurant supplier and re-heated. the batter was panko-laden and had an off flavor; but the worst part was that the shrimp had not been properly cleaned and still had its intestinal track intact. panko and poop is not a great combination.

we will never go here again.

great food great service!. may 5th was the first day i had been to sushi kuni since the reopening from shogun. i went in with my husband to try some dishes that were my favorites from shogun, as well as experimenting with new ones.
i would have to say that simple changes have made the restaurant's ambiance totally different and fresh.
the menu is full of rolls from traditional, to new fusion styles that have not yet been introduced to the grand rapids area.
the entree iordered(chicken teriyaki) was delicious as well as aesthetically pleasing. the intricate details they put into each meal seemed unreal for the price. the rolls i ordered, which were recommended from my waitress were the kuni roll and the no name roll, and they were so tasty!

as for the review from gr diner , i don't understand what they are talking about, because one of the dishes sushi kuni does not serve is hibachi dishes (as i am looking at the take out menu). i also tried to order a hibachi dinner, but instead was referred to a teriyaki dinner instead. they are probably mistaken from the chicken teriyaki they ordered, which would be cooked in teriyaki sauce. but to each, their own.
to summarize, i enjoyed shogun very much, and was sad to see it go, but am happy to find a great new restaurant to enjoy my sushi. i really like sushi kuni and i will be going back soon with family and friends!

i used to be a regular, going here to eat 2-3x/month. i found out over the summer that they have changed ownership and it honestly changed the quality, portions and prices of their food.

before the new ownership, the quality was great; very little rice, a good portion/ratio of fish/meat to filler. now it's all rice and filler. there's very little meat/ fish in the rolls.

as for portion, you can tell most of their rolls have decreased in size, probably because they're using less fish and tons of filler. iordereda bento box just today. with old owners, the bento would have fresh ice berg lettuce w/ an amazing ginger dressing and a hand full of edamame beans. the new owners (today) used wilted ice berg lettuce and their ginger dressing was very chunky and had an opaque orange color. also, they only served 10 edamame beans in the bento (yes, i actually counted!) which were covered in salt to the point where it looked very ashy.

the pricing is very different as it has drastically increased. when i first came here in 2013, the sunomuno salad was $4.95 with a great portion. just before the owners left (maybe spring 2017?), they increased it to $5.50, which is the price that you see on the menu currently on this website. the price on the menu today had increased to $6.50... the pricing for the tuna and salmon makis have increased from $3.50 to $4.95 as well.

overall, i understand the inflation of the prices for the ingredients but what i don't understand is the changes in portions. the nigiris used to be cut to a decent thickness but now it's cut so thin that you can see through it and see the actual chunks of wasabi and rice grains.

if they only increased the price and did not change the portion sizes, i'd definitely understand and continue going there to eat. don't get me wrong; they have great food but everything has changed so much that it isn't worth going here any more, in my opinion. if anyone finds out where the old owners/chefs are, please post it so we can follow them!

after visiting most of the sushi restaurants in the city sushi kuni was one of the last on our lists and seemed to have pretty decent reviews.

we finally decided to come here for a nice sushi dinner. so weordereda combination plate each and a few rolls to share. as well as some assorted tempura and a pot of green tea to share.

one of the rolls was the salmon bakudan. this was the smallest roll out of the rolls we ordered. the tiniest bakudan i've ever seen. price was $6.50. not worth the price whatsoever. i've had bigger bakudan rolls at every other restaurant and more often than not, it's cheaper or very similar in price.

another roll was the tnt roll. which was mediocre at best. much better at kenko niwa on corydon.

another was the kamikaze roll. which was a giant roll. with lots of filling. but covered in a terrible unagi sauce. it literally tasted like rotten fish. we each had 1 piece of the roll and chucked it.

other rolls included dynamite, yum yum, shitake avocado, and california. all of which were good but nothing to write home about.

we also shared a shrimp and vegetable tempura which was probably the best part of the meal.

the green tea for 2 people was just a pot with the cheapest bulk green tea bag from luckys supermarket you could find. most places are at least loose leaf.

all of this coming in at over $80.

service was also sub par. no refill on our tea was offered.

the combination plate also included dessert. which ended up being vanilla ice cream with chocolate nesquik poured over top.

and last but not least. one of the sushi "chefs" was coughing and sneezing all over the place and never once did i see him washing his hands.

i am sad about this overall experience as we both had such high expectations based on other reviews. i would pass on this place and go somewhere else next time for sure. especially for the price we ended up paying. we will not be back.

best dish weorderedwas agedashi tofu. it was great. the gomae salad was also good. the gyoza skins were a bit tough but good flavour. the spicy salmon roll smelled quite fishy, and and suicide rolls were forgettable.  overall the food did not sing for me.

best sushi i've ever had hands down. so fresh, so full of flavour, the staff and service is great and i always leave smiling! thank you for the great food!

that was my review from 3years ago.

they have since gotten new owners or management and the quality of the food has gone way down. the spicy agedashi tofu was a staple of mine and done in traditional tempura batter. iorderedit last time and it was corn starch...absolutely disgusting. i don’t even like tofu normally and this was something i would order every time. i just want to know where the owners went and how i can get the amazing sushi back in my life!

having been to the other prominent sushi places available in grand rapids i can say that sushi kuni is similar to several others in the area. weorderedthe tiger, the vegas, the bbq, mount fuji and some shashimi and miso soup. the waitstaff was a bit more helpful than we are used to. their menu is quite large and they have a little more of a selection than some of the other sushi places. the sake we had was good, my wife and i drank the whole bottle, the sushi was well put together and tasty. over all they are one of the better sushi places in town but not by much. again the food was good but their waitstaff is definitely light years ahead of the other places in town, especially maru whose waitstaff was so bad that we have never returned.

so if you are the owner/management reading this, i gave you a 4.5, please get your men's bathroom fixed and have a toilet seat that isn't falling off of the toilet. maybe even splurge on repainting and sprucing it up a bit.

excellent quality & selection. i was here last night on a whim after a meeting at the st boniface library in the same building around 8pm. i started with goma ae which was perfectly cooked spinach in a very tasty sesame sauce; the portion was very generous. i then tried the agedasi tofu which they offer spicy and this was another winner with lovely crisped wedges of tofu in a slightly sweet yet spicy dashi broth. i was impressed. i alsoorderedthe avocado shiitake roll and the killer tuna. roll. both were flavourful with great presentations. i was amazed at the amount of tuna in the killer tuna roll with tuna inside, layered on top, then yet more minced in sauce on top of that and all for only $12.95. it wasn't all full of cucumber filler which was a nice surprize ! at the end of my meal i received a complimentary dish of ice cream i wasn't expecting so bonus !! service was polite, friendly and prompt. i highly recommend you try sushi kuni next time you are in the st boniface area.

-----17 oct, 2013-----

i stopped in andordered3 rolls for takeout today - a super dynamite roll, a yam roll, and an avocado maki. each roll was full of quality flavour and prepared with fresh ingredients. i live in the neighbourhood and am glad to have such a great sushi joint so close by.

terrible food. all the rolls iorderedweren't good tasting at all. the rainbow roll especially was horrible. the fish didn't look fresh at all. simply put, i will never go back and advise people to not waste their money.

great party food. iorderedtwo party platters that were delivered on time, looked beautiful, and tasted great. there were several interesting and creative combinations for the vegetarian option. our guests were all impressed. the staff went out of their way to make this work for me. i'll definitely do this again.
