most authentic greek restaurant in america! we lived in greece for 19 years and loved the food, butfindthat most greek restaurants in the us disappoint. spiro's gyros was perfect. the greek salad and dips were superb. they had regular dishes such as gyros and souvlaki, great appetizers such as spinach and cheese pies (tiropita and spanakopita), stuffed grape leaves (dolmadakia), dips with pita bread, and fried cheese. the specials were fried cod, mousaka (greek lasagne), and pastitsio. they had greek coffee regular and frappe and great greek desserts. a real find. we were just here for a beach week with family and were surprised tofindsuch quality, because, as i said, we oftenfindamerican greek restaurants to be not very good, but we definitely will come back to this restaurant before we leave.

went on a weekend with my wife after scoping it out on a walk a week or so before. we found it to be  cute and quaint. the staff was fairly attentive and the dining area is clean. we had the grape leaves and grilled halloumi for starters and both were good, it is hard to screw up grilled cheese, but really easy to serve bad stuffed grape leaves, which they did not. the grape leaves were tender and not at all bitter, and the stuffing was fairly flavorful.
for our entrees, i ordered the pork gyro and she ordered the ground lamb and beef kebab and we were surprised tofindfrench fries in our sandwiches, which not that it mattered, but it the menu did not really go out of its way to inform us that the fries that came with the gyro were in it, and we thought that we were getting each a side of fries, but it was a small matter. i really wanted to love the pork gyro but i found it to be very fatty and i was left missing the lamb as is usual in the gyros i have grown up eating, and there usually are not chunks of fat present. my wife was not super pleased with the lamb and beef kebob since she did not really like the liquid feta cheese that was inside the kebob.
this is a new place and the wording on the menus can always be changed and kinks can be worked out. i think i would like to give them another show since there are many other things on the menu that i would like. i just wonder why they do not offer a lamb rotisserie to put in one of their gyros.

trying a greek-american gyros for the first time was a transformational experience that delivered intense flavor beyond any sandwich i'd ever tasted. as much as i still love it, i've always been hoping tofinda homemade version made from fresh meat. i've tried delightful versions overseas, where pieces of meat are packed on a spit, but never in the u.s-- until i discovered spyros' gyros earlier this week!

the pork gyros is packed with all of the desirable garlic and spicy flavor, but the meat is more naturally tender and delicious than the processed american version. the fries (along with everything apparently) are homemade, and this is the way that it's actually done in greece. the only other thing that i've tried so far is the grilled halloumi, which was fantastic, and the menu is fairly large so i'll be back to explore a lot more.

the staff is very helpful, and put care into the preparation. this is a truefindfor anywhere in the u.s., and i'm thrilled to see this addition to pensacola!
