7 of us went out for dinner tonight and we couldn't fault a single thing. we all had something different from the menu and we all loved what we ordered.  great service, amazing food!!  we will certainly be going back.

came after the wow exhibit, which is just across the street for a drink. i had the 5 malt old dark and it was great.

looks pretty busy current and a good atmosphere. good place for a drink.

close to airport and free wifi

the place to go if you prefer quantity over quality! the food is generally flavourless, piled up on the plate. not recommended if you like tasty meals.

i have read so many nice reviews about this place and was really looking forward to trying it out. unfortunately it turned out to be a dreadful meal. there were 3 of us and we ordered a small pork rib starter to share. 1 or 2 pieces were tender but a lot of them were burnt and therefore very dry. i would feel bad if i prepared something of this quality for my family, never mind serving it in a restaurant.

next up mains. we ordered the middlemarch pork, drunken steak and salmon. the salmon was crispy outside and tender inside and that was nice, except the portion was a bit small.

the pork without the sauce was tasteless and turned into deep pink in the middle. i don't think you are supposed to have pork not fully cooked. it is the kumara season but the kumara mash has no flavour. the sauce is supposed to be green peppercorn but for some reason has a curry powder taste to it.

the drunken steak was supposed to be medium rare, and indeed it came as such. only that the outside is 80% burnt and the meat was tough as a piece of well done steak.

i do appreciate it was a busy tuesday night, but if a chef can't cope with a near full house then it is a bit sad for the restaurant owner. overall extremely disappointed and won't go back.

we went here with guests from england and had a great night.
steaks were particularly good . hot bread starters delicious and huge portions. possibly a little over-priced but venue was lively and waitress attentive and cheerful. recommended +++

went there for my sons birthday, a booking for six adults.food was great, service was excellent and the beer nice. the middle march pork was cooked to perfection, my wife had lamb shanks which she totally enjoyed.
the others had pork ribs, drunken steak, castllemaiine? burger & the other pork dish.
the porter went down well as did the wheat beer
will be going back again

i never really know what to say about the child friendly aspect of a place - i suppose it depends upon the age of the child. for me, it would be inappropriate to take a child to a bar or a fine-dining restaurant. personally, i would only take kids under 10 to fast food chains with playgrounds. but that's just me. i mention this for speights because it s a bar, with bar patrons, but my numerous experiences here have never been impacted upon by children.
i try to have something different every time i go to speights and each time i enjoy the meal whatever it is. the calamari is particularly pleasing because you get so much, when so often as is the case with calamari is that you get hardly any for an outrageous price. i do find that the veges are a little too under-cooked for my liking when having the lamb shanks.
the service always very attentive and satisfying. i will keep going back time and time again. the jalapeno cheese balls, pork croquettes & garlic bread are simply divine - the portions big enough to share. most recently i had the bannockburn beef - a huge steak sitting atop truffle oil mashed potato with field mushrooms and bernaise over the top. you don't need an entree when you have this - it is very  filling. it comes with salad which i feel is not needed - mine barely touched the plate. i would also recommend the lamb shanks, which i've had on many occasion. the place can be a bit loud but it doesn't matter - the decor and staff are awesome!

here's what the hubby thought:

"haven't been here for some time, and lacking imagination we came back last week as we wanted somewhere we knew and remembered to be ok. we were warmly greeted by the barman when walking in, and offered any table. no sooner had we sat and he was there with water and another welcome. beverages were ordered. efficient but not imposing. she ordered a deep-fried cheese ball entree and a 400g sirloin, the actual name of the dish escapes me. i ordered bread with garlic butter, pulled-pork croquettes and the drunken steak.

the bread arrived at the same time as the entrees, all were very good. the garlic butter was flavoured how it should be and very generous and half ended up on my steak. my croquettes were also very good and for $10 it was a generous portion, and word was the cheese balls were also well received.

steaks arrived, and these too were of a good standard. generous and well cooked. the veges i swapped a salad for weren't the most appealing but that is the only negative that comes to mind. prices are starting to get up there, and if i got vege like that again i would be asking questions, however these dishes still represented good value. no room for desserts unfortunately.

looking at other tables, the fish dish looked impressive and the burgers to-die-for. all in all a great experience, and we will certainly be back soon.

dreadful lunch today. decided to go somewhere kid friendly and i have visited speights ale houses in other cities and thought their meals reliable and generous. our meals took way too long to arrive and arrived well after other guests had arrived and been fed (?). when eventually they did the serving portion of chips for our kids was seriously not what we expected. we asked for more chips and more came. my husband said his calamari was delicious. but my steak got sent back (having arrived after a long wait, and with now tired kids, i declined to reorder). the steak was completely overcooked. beyond even well done. i saw other frustrated customers too and one who sent her steak back as well. something not right in the kitchen there. the manager didn't charge us for my meal and threw in two ice cream sundaes for the kids but the experience left us all really annoyed that we chose there in the first place. spoiled what was supposed to be a special family lunch. grrr.

food was okay, steak strangely unevenly cooked with some rare parts but otherwise fine.

didn't order myself but the desserts looked tempting.

wow! i have to commend this place on pretty much everything. we had an experience tonight second to none and we are regular diners around the town. we felt special from the moment we opened the door. the manager greeted us instantly and was a lovely gentleman who seemed genuinely interested in our group and making sure we were well looked after. all four of us had beautifully cooked food from a superb steak to a fish of the day (groper) that wouldn't have been out of place in a fine dining restaurant. dessert was great and complemented at the end of the night with lovely coffee which is a surprise from a pub!
great staff very friendly and accommodating we'll definitely be regulars here.

attending nelson masters- booked a table (last minute) for 8 of us at speights- seated upstairs on a very busy friday night. ordered cocktails (one not even listed, and additional limes brought to the table without being requested).

amazing, attentive service from (yes young) but very capable waiting staff- all of which were pleasant and positive with our many requests.

all meals were great, my fresh tuna- sensational.

no delays or waiting and not even a hassle for us all to pay individually and use our entertainment cards! congratulated the manager on the night on brilliant staff and lovely meals.

would definitely recommend to anyone and suggest return visits for any of the previous customers- doesn't sound like the same restaurant!

had a great lunch at speights ale house today. it was very busy but the staff were great, told us there would be a 30 minute wait for food, but we got our garlic bread appetiser straight away, and the drinks arrived promptly. the food was excellent, two of us ordered the battered blue cod and chips, one had the big breakfast, and one had chicken carbonara. we all enjoyed our meals. we also had deal vouchers and thought we might get second-rate service but this was not the case. wouldn't hesitate to go back.

five lads on a boys weekend ate and drank around nelson for four days. our night here was amazing food, well beyond what we expected from a speights ale house. the service was above and beyond and we enjoyed the night which ended in a pleasant surprise on leaving with the reasonable price. would make a bee line to go back.
