i recommend this place if you have a smaller party (2 – 4 people). despite the unexciting name of the restaurant, their specialty soy saucechickenis worth checking out and makes a great chinese new year dish. i like their otherchickendishes as well, although they may be more suitable if you have a keen palate for cantonese food. the deep fried squab makes a great alternative for chicken, although it is a little pricier. for greens, the pea shoot stir fry with garlic is well executed. the price here have gone up a lot the last year. however, it is still a good choice if you don’t have a big party for largely portioned dishes.

free rangechickenmenu

an early sunday lunch - a table for 2

tried their free rangechickenset lunch - half frchicken(we chose empress fr chicken, supposed to be treated with wine), came with a bowl ofchickensoup (you can substitute the soup w. a drink), a plate of bean curd with veggies, 2 bowls of rice.

overall taste was ok.  it may be my own opinion that i do not like theirchickento be served cold directly from the fridge.  plus, i could not find any 'wine' taste in thechickenat all.

i would prefer going to prata-man.

soyachickenis delicious at this place. rest is mediocre. beef brisket hot pot only had a few pieces of brisket with mostly lettuce on the bottom. vegetables tasted sort of bland. the salted fish meat pie was very salty. egg tofu did not look appetizing and had no flavour.

ample parking though which is great.

specializing inchickenand wonton? that may only be half true. though their soyachickenwas not bad at all, the opposite remains true for their prawn wontons. first of all, the broth itself reeked heavily of an unappealing fish like smell. the actual wontons had a weak flavour and overall weren't very good. another very disappointing dish was the honey garlic pork. the sauce was somewhat standard, but the actual pork inside was almost papery, and reminded me of tofu. something i did enjoy though were the black bean clams and black bean beef chowmein.

for the lunch special, you can have a soup or a drink. ben opted for the daily soup. the daily soup of the day was pork bones with red carrot and green carrot. we had thechickenflavoured rice instead of plain steamed rice. we also ordered a second lunch special to share. the above is goat brisket/tendon on rice. this is usually eaten in the winter and it is usually served in a hotpot. for the lunch special, it is served directly on the rice itself. the meat was tender and we love the sauce on the rice.

we had lunch at specialtychickenchicken & wonton house on ackroyd road. we ordered two dishes to share. the first item was halibut hot pot. the halibut was slightly crunchy as they were deep fried before cooking in the hot pot with lots of onion and green onion. i can just eat rice with the onions alone with the sauce that sticks to the onions.

"can i go trick or treating dad?" "what? no. trick or treating is a waste of time. and, it's dangerous. someone might try to poison you.". "i'm turning 20 in a month dad." ~ yes i see the irony in this statement ;). "you act like you're 14.".   since my dad didn't let me go trick or treating, he made up for it by taking me out for dinner in richmond!! pretty good trade off imo :d

we were planning on going to top shanghai, but when we got there they were closed...we were tired and hungry by then, so we just defaulted to specialtychicken& wonton house next door! (which turned out to be a pretty good decision.)

the place was packed when we got there! we had to wait 5 mins for a seat ~ but we were seated promptly at a booth, which i was really happy about.

for some weird reason my dad felt like splurging that day...on $3 oysters! :o
so out of character for him! this is coming from a guy who eats at kent's kitchen all the time ~ but don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with eating at kent's ;)

april, 9, 2019 @ dinner

we went there for dinner. we had:

small lamb stew hot pot ... it came without the gas stove, we asked one of the long pony tail hair server, she told us that, we need to order the big size, if we want the gas stove.

i found out, it's just only $6 more for big one. then i asked her to change into big size with gas stove.. then she went to ask the cook and back said that...." ok.. we can put more meat and veggie inside for u...but without the gas stove" with inpatient and mean face..

we asked for gas stove , because the lamb stew will be cold without keep it warm.

what's the point, they give me more food without gas stove??

its end up, we keep the small size... but found out it just only have 6 small pieces of lamb stew with dried bean curd on top and a lot of cabbages underneath. it's not worth for $24.

we also ordered...

half soy chicken.. smaller size before and extremely salty. ..

salty fish with guy lan ... veggies look and taste like overcooked.

their services and food quality used to be good.

no wonder we are 3 rd table at dinner time...

january, 12, 2019 @ lunch

we tried something new today.

we had :

fried beef on crispy noodles with satay sauce ... i asked them to make noodles extra crispy.. it's perfect, but not enough sauce on it.. beef was too chewy... they put pineapple on it?!

beef shank wonton noodles in soup... nothing special

december, 25, 2018 @ lunch

we don't like turkey. we had...

fish sauce chicken... omg... i found 15 long pieces of hair on onechickenwing.. a lot of hair on every 2nd piece of chicken..

fried egg and shrimp flat noodles... not much shrimp inside

december, 15, 2018

bbq pork wonton noodles in soup... my grandma asked for fatty side.. because it was too lean and chewy, she cannot eat last time.. it came perfectly what she asked for

mixed meat on fried flat noodles... they put tons of bean sprouts on it, can't even see flat noodles.. lol

i went there for lunch before shopping. i found out that, their lunch combo had mark up their price $0.75 more for each item plus smaller size as last week.
i had ordered a bowl of beef brisket / wonton noodles in soup... they used to put 5 slices of beef brisket but just only 2 and half slices now plus noodles are half size than before.. but it's still taste good..

3 of us went there for lunch today. we tried their fish / pork liver congee, salty fishchickenfried rice (tasteless /chickenare too dried / not much salty fish inside ), shredded pork fried noodles (it's pretty tasty/ too small portion / noodles are really crispy), deep fried smelt fish, halfchickenwith wine sauce (it's tasteless ), bbq pork and wonton noodles.

food was cold and not fresh! terrible service. the 2 dishes we ordered came with rice and soup. the soup was luke warm, rice was cold, chickenplatter was not fresh and the hotpot was cold.. we asked them to make it hot and the waitress was so rude to take it away .. only to receive it back minutes later and still only warm. the service is really bad and would only reccomend the free rangechickenwhen it's fresh.. will not be back! please beware!

disappointing. slow service, bad service, and they demanded a tip? because this is richmond. almond chicken, or (chicken& almond) has lots of batter and grease, but almost no chicken. special soup and wonton soup are both ridiculously salty. soy duck was okay, except that it was delevered cold. overall, it was a disappointing dinning experience!

where's the wonton?. for a restaurant that calls itself a wonton house, i don't see a lot of wonton options. aside from a lot of squab dishes, the menu looks similar to most chinese restaurants.

the friendly service (rare in chinese restaurants) are quick and efficient. the servers dart efficiently from table to table, as organised as bees in a hive. our server speaks no english--and when i say no english, i mean none. i ordered off the menu by numbers but she didn't know any of the numbers. fortunately, i speak cantonese, otherwise, i'd have to point at the menu and grunt. no worries, your food will still get to you.

the food here looks a little different than the norm. the egg foo yung sits in a round dish/bowl, and looks a bit like a quiche. the top layer tastes a little crispy while the innards are ooey, gooey good. i would have liked to see a bit more barbecued pork but what's there tastes fine.

the roast pork comes with wonderfully crisp skin and great flavour. the meat is not too fatty, which can often occur because the roast comes from the pork bellies.

the curry vegetables have a bit of spice, but not enough to intimidate the mildest of eaters. the vegetables taste crunchy and cooked well.

with two dishes ordered, you get the rice and a bonus bowl ofchickenfeet broth. a lot of people i know won't want to eat the feet--at least taste the broth, it's delicious. dessert comes with dinner too, which is a sweetish bean bowl.
