surprised and delighted. we were in baltimore for the day as part of our us vacation and happened to chance upon sotto sopra. there were four of us for an early saturday lunch; the restaurant had a few people in there and perhaps due to the time of day about 11.45-12.30pm, maybe we just missed the lunch crowd.

for a very reasonable $15 we all took the two course option which we considered to be extremely reasonable; especially, when the beverages (iced teas and sodas) were constantly refilled.

i had one of their salads to start and also tried my partners bisque - both were very tasty, fresh and well presented. our travelling companions also were quite happy with their respective salads. for the entree, everyone else chose the panino option and each commented that it was agreatsandwich. my spaghetti alla'amatriciana was tasty, flavoursome and not at all heavy as some pasta meals can be.

lastly, we enjoyedgreatservice throughout and would gladly revisit if we ever to find ourselves in baltimore again in the future.

i have a love hate relationship with restaurant week, but never with sotta sopra . they never disappoint. we started with a bottle of wine; you’ll find it shocking that we picked a pinot noir.  the bottle has a beautiful red stone on it, if you pick your wine based on how the bottle looks – like i usually do.  quite charming.  it was agreatchoice for our meal – fruity and velvety, meshing well with each of our three courses. we took a while to plan our courses.  my friends are so great, we went a little more family style and had to make sure not to repeat. we started with the calamari, burrata and goat cheese salad. the goat cheese was fried into little balls.  i never think goat cheese can get any better, then they fry it.  what?  the salad is an arugula salad with roasted baby beets – gold and red.  then chef tops it with shaved fennel and a tangerine vinaigrette.  the calamari was quite tasty – fried with two dipping sauces – a garlic aioli and a spicy marinara.  it is going to sound crazy, seeing as though my first course was beets and goat cheese – but i might go so far as to say that the burrata was my favorite.  the finocchiona was outrageous – it’s a thinly sliced tuscan sausage flavored with fennel.  burrata is becoming my favorite soft cheese – made with mozzarella and cream, so you can spread it on the bread (or in this case the salami) just like butter.  i am so glad my friends like to share. for the second course, i went with my favorite thing on the menu. in fact, i love it so much, i write about it any chance i get: the ravioloni di zucca con salsiccia.  i am not sure why they called them raviolonis, because they were still those little sacchetti purse like filled pastas.  this is definitely super heavy.  i’d be shocked if you could finish it.  once again, i thank my friends for both helping me and ordering a much lighter pasta dish.  we also shared the gnocchi di ricotta – gorgeous gnocchi with a lit

i'm the owner of the restaurant and i want to mention that there are some fake reviews written recently about us by some disgruntled employee. i would suggest you try the restaurant for yourself and decide. i have agreatand very committed front of the house staff.

our second pasta is sacchetti di zucca con salsiccia. translated: pumpkin pasta with amaretto cookies, broken sausage, and cream. the combination may seem unlikely, but somehow it works. wonderfully! this gets passed around the table and the feeling is unanimous. the dish may not look so beautiful, but trust me, it has agreatpersonality. this is one of those dishes that i would go out of my way for- or at least all the way to baltimore.

okay, but.... while visiting baltimore, we decided to try sotto sopra based on both the urbanspoon reviews and a site that listed the restaurant as gluten-free-friendly. with regards to the latter, our waitress seemed to be totally in the dark. after being asked about the gluten-free options, she delivered 2 of 3 appetizers that contained wheat flour. she got frazzled and even borderline hostile when we complained, so we ended up keeping all appetizers. and when it came to the main course for the gf diner, the chef proved to be overprotective, preparing not just a gf dish, but a bland one, missing the risotto requested in place of pasta. the appetizers and main courses were good, but a far cry fromgreatand some of the gushing reviews found here. all four diners were ultimately disappointed. sotto sopra is just a notch or two below what it should be. i suggest little italy may be a much better bet.

vday deliciousness. my bf and i went here for valentines day and to our delight they are continuing restaurant week through february! i started out with the polenta with mushrooms, goat cheese, and spinach. it was amazing! and it was a very large portion. next i chose the risotto of the day which included parmesan and braised pork shoulder. mmm...the risotto was so creamy and the pork shoulder exremely tender. my bf got the grilled rockfish which was cooked to perfection. for desert i chose the chocolate tort which was super rich but unfortunately i was so stuffed from the risotto that i couldnt finish it. my bf got the sorbet of the day: lemon. yum! overall it was agreatvalentines date!

fantastico!. for upscale italian, this is the place. food and atmosphere aregreatwith a diverse group of clientele.

if you are used to little italy, this will probably not be your scene. fortunately, i like them both.
