i went to have the tuesday test kitchen yesterday night and it was one of the better "taste experiences" i've had in auckland.
first off, the bad: the atmosphere and interior was just not what i expected of a restaurants that's generally regarded as one of the best in auckland. it's quite a small restaurant, which isn't a problem in itself, but it becomes one when there are too many tables packed into the space. it essentially creates two problems: 1) you feel a bit cramped up and claustrophobic and 2) the whole restaurant becomes excessively loud. the noise levels in the restaurant would be more appropriate for one of a bar, not a "fine dining" establishment like sidart.
the food, though. just amazing. the 3 mains (duck, john dory, wagyu beef) were good, but the real stars of the night was the carrot dish and the desserts.
eating the carrot dish was like exploring an un-pioneered jungle of tastes: each spoonful introduced my mouth a new combination of tastes, something unknown but beautiful...i just didn't know what the next amazing spoonful would bring.
the desserts were just as tantalizing. whey icecream, orange jelly, freeze-dried oranges, this cruncy sugar slice thing...they say experiments, i say magic.
