carpe diem.seizethe day. or at leastseizea bite to eat from seize.

i frequent this wee gem because i can eat 90% of the menu. i'm gluten free and vegetarian so going toseizeis like going to healthy paradise for me.

the place is minimalist. a few tables, a big massive table, a cabinet with salads, another with sweet treats and that's it. but i don't go for the atmosphere here.

the food is outstanding. my go to is the vegan bene. yep... let's take all the good things about an eggs bene, deconstruct it, make it vege friendly and then construct it. with tofu. i kid you not, try it.

the sweets treats are awesome. they look like all sweet things should... deliciously evil. but they're as healthy as you will get for what they are. my favs always change because everything is good, but the snickers inspired slice is masterclass.

and of course, what would one of my reviews be without a mention of coffee. they use flight coffee which is becoming a staple here in welly. i love the nutty flavours, depth of colour and smell each cup brings. wonder if i could get an iv line next time.

this place won't be for everyone but if you're slightly adventurous or health conscious, give it a try. you shouldn't be disappointed.

got the smoothie bowl and waffles.
love thatseizehas many vegan and gluten free options as there aren’t many dedicated solely to this in the cbd. smoothie bowl was delicious, waffles were good but a little soggy/dense in the middle. overall, delicious food (even if a little pricey) and would go again.

the food inseizewas alright. i ordered the smoothie bowl and that was tasty. however, every staff here seems don't know how to smile. they just stand there and didn't greeting people at all.

my experience atseizetoday was perhaps the worst i've ever experienced -- both in terms of service and the food.  i have been toseizeonce before, and the first time i went i absolutely loved the food.  today, however, was awful.  i ordered the carrot cake waffles with high hopes, waiting well over twenty minutes for my food (the first time was well worth the wait).  after taking just two bites of my food (which didn't even taste good) my mouth began to burn and my tongue and throat began to feel puffy.  understandably, an adverse reaction to food could happen to anyone, but that wasn't the issue.

despite not touching my meal and glancing over at waitresses, it took ten minutes for me to finally wave a waitress over (and considering the small size of the place, that's truly saying something).  (in those ten minutes i tried to drink water to help the burning, but the water jug remained empty.)   when i asked the waitress what was in the food, as my mouth was burning and i was having a bit of trouble breathing, she acted as if i was inconveniencing her and at first did not even come around to the table, requiring me and my partner to talk to her across the room.  when she finally came over she didn't seem alarmed, offer to help me, or apologise.  she slowly listed out the ingredients and after i told her i wasn't sure why i might be having an adverse reaction to the food, she shrugged, said "oh okay" and then left.  she didn't ask if there was anything she could do for me, just huffed and walked away.

after that i leftseizewith my meal almost completely untouched, as i was unable to eat any of it, and only as she saw me getting up to leave did she call out, "oh, sorry!" as if that could help.

i am completely disgusted by the poor service atseizeand will never be returning.

i am vegan and have only been for a few months and whenever i have gone into town with friends or doing a little by myself i have never found a really great vegan friendly cafe until i foundseizethrough i friend!!

seize is such an amazing place once you get they system of how it flows, i adore their food from a range of healthy salads and smoothies which are amazing! to a little treat of mostly vegan cakes, raw cheesecakes and slices

even though it is more expensive than other places it is so worth it and anyway shouldn't we be taking good care of our bodies so we can thrive? i think so, to me even though i'm a broke student still at school i will spend any amount of money when it comes to health andseizeis definitely worth it x1000

i so recommend eating there it is my first choice, if only they were open on the weekends

i decided to give the trendy organic salad bar another go. the first time i triedseizeit had just opened and i was a bit confused as to how it worked. i found it quite expensive and looking back it was probably just because they were just getting their business model up and running.

a good few months have passed and on a sunny friday decided some good, local and organic produce seemed like just the ticket.

there was a line out the door to order, with the seats outside and inside full.

it probably only took me a couple of minutes to get the counter, which was time i needed to decided what to order.

they have a nice choice of juices, smoothies, salads and breakfast style dishes on the board, which states that they try to source local and organic ingredients where possible and build relationships with local farmers – which is great. they don’t tell you however which of their produce is organic.

there is also some yummy looking raw/vegan cabinet food and a selection of teas, coffees and cold drinks like kombucha

i decided to try the smoked chicken salad ($13): house smoked free-range chicken, seasonal greens, tomato, chili buckwheat, cabbage and pickled cucumber with sweet paprika aioli.

the woman who took my order was friendly. it was quite busy and probably took between 5-8 minutes to get my takeaway salad.

sadly, again i was a bit disappointed with the salad, for the price.

there was a good amount of smoked chicken and it was tasty – not too overpoweringly smoky. as a lot of people probably care most about the meat this was a good portion.

however there was hardly any buckwheat (probably about a 1/8 of a cup) and it was somehow both hard and chewy.

there was also not much salad itself – a couple of bits of tomato and probably less than a cup of leaves, a few bits of pickled cucumber, a little bit of red cabbage and that was it.

the aioli was really tasty though and i like that it was on the side in a separate pot.

in my opinion, even though they try to use local/organic ingredients, it’s overpriced. it’s obviously really popular, but i personally wouldn’t go back, at least for a salad. the smoothie/juice looked nice, but again quite expensive (although comparable to tank prices) but i will probably go back to try a bit of beetroot and avocado chocolate cake!

recommended, but variable, reasonably pricey and possibly slightly more fashionable than warranted.

i don’t know why its calledseize– perhaps as someone suggested from “seize the day” or perhaps “seizure” as a result of caffeine overdose. certainly the web site is non informative as to name or philosophy – just photos of a lot of serious 20-30 yr olds pretending either to be having great fun queuing, watching a floorshow of a staff member, or intelligently considering every mouthful in terms of carbon units. no-one seems to be enjoying the taste of anything.

the section of theseizewebsite labelled “what we are about” simply says “clean eating” which might lead one to hours of internal philosophical discussion analysing the daft (designer clever) ambiguity of the phrase. certainly the vegetables arrayed in wooden bins as part of the décor are remarkably clean – far more so than anything at commonsense organics.

seize’s website portrays the café in terms of image rather than substance. the philosophy is not explicitly stated –it is left to the imagination - but its photographs convey an impression (cleverly) of everything that is currently fashionable for a younger demographic – paleo, vegan, organic etc without actually falling into any one category. it treads a clever line between health and fashionability.

it is an image that auckland knows well, but, will it wash in a more discerning wellywood? the auckland “unbakeries”, repleat with something-free or raw, tap into a fashion that is frantically groping for health and immortality, trying to abandon animal based gastronomy (questionably), cruel farm practices (obviously), genetic engineering (probably) etc. they place their woes on meat, gluten, cow’s milk, cooking, and refined sugar. yet each of these except the last, have contributed enormously to the development of homo sapiens and civilisation – you may no doubt debate that, and we are all entitled to opinions.

the café itself is vaguely nordic, clean white, pine, semi industrial with boxes of fruit and vegetables lining the walls. seating about 20 or so people inside on small and a larger shared table. chairs outside also. music pleasant, coffee – flight. the cabinet items looked very good. individual salad ingredients that could be combined, a blackboard menu of bowls that looked interesting and certainly every fashionable ingredient from the now passé quinoa to maco powder was listed somewhere. there were chia drinks as well as what must be the most on-trend drink - coffee kombucha (which is actually seriously delicious – but is basically a fermented coffee soft drink).
seize labels each item on its blackboard menu with a code according to whether it is paleo, vegan, dairy free, gluten free or free of refined sugar. so it is possible to decide which ethical/dietary item you need according to all manner of psychiatry, philosophy and pathology. it does not tell you the calorie content of anything – and this, to my mind, is the only serious thing that is likely to effect the majority of people – that and your genes. the fact that something contains no refined sugar is largely irrelevant if it contains an equivalent amount of unrefined sugar. cafes promoting well-being should start to promote low calorie deliciousness.
now the purpose of my first visit toseize(i've made three) was not to analyse its place in the world of ethical “clean” eating, but to see if it could make a cup of tea. tea is a symbol of unfashionability, simplicity and care. i am increasingly coming to the opinion that the ability to make tea is a good measure of a café’s worth.

i firstly sought to determine which teas were available.

there were libertine teas (blends), tea horse road teas, there were flavoured teas …. but the only black tea was an english breakfast tea (although tea horse do a couple of interest) … i humbly asked for it, feeling, for all the world that i was relegated to the also ran’s of cool. to save face however, on my first visit i ordered a “cacao goji macaroon.”

the service was lovely, a delightfully pleasant lady took my order and i felt awful resisting the “rock ohm” tea, or “kapow” from libertine that she was enthusing over.

i was not asked about milk.

while waiting for the tea i read a sign which seemed to come closest to some philosophical statement in that they “source local ingredients, use organic when they can [perhaps might be stretching it here based upon my observations of the back wall fruit and veg] and build relationships with local farmers.”

the macaroon came first – more like a truffle – slightly dry, crumbly and with a musty taste. i assumed the latter was intended, and was a result of the goji berries – amusing how we savour bad tastes and smells if we assume or are told they are desirable – some cheeses are an obvious example. i don’t know the macaroon’s origin but possibly house made, and possibly “little bird”.

the tea came in a rather large (3-4 cup) stainless pot, half full and containing a single tea bag. the accompanying thick ceramic cappuccino cup was warm. the young lady had no idea as to the brand and indeed i could see it had come from an unlabelled plastic container.

the milk came in a small glass and it contained three small black-brown floating bits, which, if organic, i hoped were dead – after all i was “clean eating”. i tasted it and it seemed ok.

the tea when poured was of a reasonably good colour, little character, mild astringency – it tasted like tea bag tea. possibly it was one of a variety of ebt that had better ethical credentials – fair trade and planet?. the temperature faded quickly.

on my tea scoring system (see my astoria review)  i gaveseize12/30, well behind the current leaders (louis sergeant and clark's on 19, kilbirnie's the little teapot and silverstream's the fig leaf cafe on 18 and both le maquis and chocolate frog on 17).

i’ve been back twice since, trying to get a feel for quality. once for breakfast and also brunch. breakfast was the granola, which i think is brilliant. sprouted buckwheat and oats with a coating of cacao (the fashionable way of saying cocoa), and a topping of greek yoghurt, then a compote of rhubarb (on one occasion) and strawberries (on the next). it was seriously good – and it “felt” healthy.

for a brunch it was ceviche on a salad. the fish was great, just the right degree of flavour and texture, but the salad was boring – i tossed up whether to finish it – lacking in a dressing that said anything to me.

the coffee on these occasions was well made, good flavour, unburnt, enjoyable.

all in all there are some things thatseizedoes well – clearly the philosophy is on the right track but it would be useful if it was more intelligently articulated. the food is good, the coffee is excellent. it's reasonably pricey and the high calorie cabinet is best ignored. basically i liked it.

the name of this place encourages you toseizethe day, but is the food a good catch?

had a quick meet up scheduled with a friend so dropped by this cafe for the first time. the place is open and bright, but quite small for an establishment in the heart of the cbd. the blackboard menu adds a nice touch.

we ordered the passionfruit macaroon, apple smoothie, kale and goji smoothie, and the raw
peanut butter and jelly cheesecake.

both the smoothies were awesome, although the kale one was a little too thick so it eventually got a little hard to slurp through the straw.

the bad part, for me, was the cheesecake. first of all, there was no cheese. maybe i didn't read the description on the menu properly, but i think it only said "raw", not dairy free. either way, i think "peanut butter and jelly cake" would have been a more appropriate name. also, it was too nutty for me; i think it had peanuts and cashews, and only a little jelly in proportion to everything else. the redeeming part was that the texture was good, definitely passable, but i didn't finish it, and wouldn't order it a second time.

showstopper: we met the owner mike briefly, he was really nice and humble, and a super friendly guy.

overall grade: b. heard their salads are superb, so would definitely return to try those.

seize has delicious, reasonably priced, healthy, varied food served with a smile and a chat. the decor is simple and focuses on the food they provide, fresh and nutritious. i cannot faultseizeexcept that they're further away from my work than i'd like! keep it up friends, love your work!

it was my first time going toseizelast friday. my first impressions where the staff are very nice, the interior design layout was subtle, and earthy looking.

the food is a perfect healthy option. mainly salads and the odd naughty raw slice. i had the vegan sticky slice which was mouth watering! i ended up by taking another one away to eat later at the airport 😋

i do however think that the staff could be nicer when delivering the food. i also ended up by sitting outside because their weren't many seats inside.

after reading all the reviews, i decided to giveseizecafe a try. ordered the lemon infused smoked chicken salad and a mocha today. both food and drink came quickly. first of all, service was friendly and efficient. coffee was great! the salad was definitely so fresh! crunchy cubes of apple, baby spinach, and basil pesto went well together with the smoked chicken. the parmesan wafer gave the dish a nice touch and texture. definitely will come back for more!

this is the second time being at seize. i like the concept of a healthy cafe, and i will admit that the smoothies and juices are pretty good. but it goes pretty downhill from there

to be honest this will probably be my last time at seize. i had the acaia chia pudding which was alright, but i wouldn't come rushing back. the presentation of the food is pretty bad compared to how it is portrayed on instagram. my friend ordered the acaia bowl which was garnished with slices of mandarin....? very strange choice of fruit to compliment a berry flavoured dish.

the cabinet food looks pretty nice and i probably would return to try it, but other than that i would not dine in. i findseizea hyped up cafe, hence the low rating

this was my second time coming toseizeafter a pretty average first experience. the interior is decorated nicely but it is a little cramped which is less than desirable when busy.

i chose the acai bowl which had an improved presentation from last time when my friend ordered it. it tasted nice and i liked the pineapple on top. i also ordered the optimism juice which was really nice although a bit pricey.

overall, an above average experience at seize. the meal was better this time, but i don't think i'll be returning unless it's to try the cabinet food.

had an awesome experience atseizetoday - the mushroom and spring onion soup was so delicious, as was the apple spice smoothie. to top it all off, when my smoothie was a bit late (which was completely understandable, they were very busy at the time) i was given a complimentary raw macaron which was also next-level tasty. so two thumbs up for the food as well as the excellent service at seize! cheers!

i just discoveredseizethis week and have visited 3 times already. i am really excited there is a healthy, modern option at this end of town. i'm the kind of person who likes to eat nutrient rich whole foods, i shop at commonsense organics and i avoid sugar, processed foods and gluten because i believe they inflame the body - but i'm a normal looking person who works in a corporate office. so when i don't have time to make my lunch for work there aren't too many options.
they are friendly! already the man who takes my order greets me by name (he remembers from when i placed an order for a lunchtime pick up) and i've had random, genuine chats with the chef and the owner. my husband went by himself on tuesday and had a coffee, and when he went back on thursday they greeted him with the question "another flat white today?".
the food is not just healthy, it is delicious! for three days in a row i have had the "immune" juice (something like beetroot, carrot, greens, pear, lemon, ginger). there are at least two other juices on the menu that i am keen to try, but i just haven't been able to go past this one yet. i had a salad from their pick and mix options which i'd be happy to eat everyday as it was better than what i could have done at home, but i do like to have a good portion of protein so the next time i had the quinoa burger (no need to ask to hold the processed white bread bun because it comes wrapped in lettuce). everything was so tasty. my only regret so far is that i haven't yet tried the "guoc" that you can add to any dish. definitely doing that next time.
they are only open weekdays, but if i was to take my 5 yr old there in school hols then their date scones or other similar options would go down a treat with him too (he doesn't get excited about having kale and zucchini in a salad like me),
some of my work colleagues find it pricier than other lunch options, like a salad at habitual fix or tank (diy salads at these places have previously been my back up lunch option), but that's not comparing like for like. i prefer the locally sourced, organic, quality ingredients and that does cost a little extra. (plus it's actually a tastier option).
