therestaurantis beautiful; simple tables and wicker chairs in an open atrium. cue the eastern instrumentals with platters of food held high by servants in loincloths. . beautiful music may play in my head, but saladang is not a song i plan to sing. the menu has seen better days, with half the appetizers unavailable, tackily taped over with tiny pieces of paper. their famous papaya salad was fine, but i didn't go all the way to pasadena for a papaya salad to be just fine.

song is style over substance. don't get me wrong here. i don't think you could order a bad dish on their menu, but...

1. it does feel authentic.
2. it lacks variety.
3. the main dining room is too big, noisy, lacks ambiance and intimacy.
4. the patio is alternately too hot, too cold, too noisy.
5. the service feels overburdened even when therestaurantis half empty.
6. the kitchen seems to care too much for presentation too little for taste (exactly the opposite of original saladang's winning recipe).

the last time i came to song was because s1 was closed and the manager offered the entire s1 menu at song. seeing the two menus side by side brought the failures of song into sharp relief. it is simply not what i want in a thai restaurant.

saladang song. thisrestaurantis the big sister to the smallerrestaurantnext door called saladang. it's food is more authentic thai (i hear :) i love the food but the space is big and drafty. they do have outdoor seating which is nice. the prices are fairly reasonable, but not cheap.

fresh, delicious, consistent. of all the restaurants in l.a., i have by far been to saladang the most. it is my very favorite restaurant. i am most impressed by their consistency-- each dish is just as delicious every time you visit. this kitchen never seems to have an off night. the wholerestaurantruns seamlessly unlike any other place i've been to.

if you are looking for 'authentic' thai food, this is probably not the place. it's more of a california spin on thai cuisine in a beautiful industrial-with-orchids setting, very fast and efficient service, moderate prices and a balanced portion size.

my favorite dish: saladang salad (shaved green apple with thai peanut sauce)

long wait!. we ate here last saturday. they would not take reservations for less than 6. for a table of 4, we waited over an hours and a half on our feet (there was one chair which was being used by a pregnant woman). the food was decent. the sizzling beef was good. the noise and crowds packed into the smallrestaurantmakes it uncomfortable and the waiters do their best to hurry you out...politely.
