sailors' rest

probably should have done more research on places to eat in geelong before our road-trip visit. this place has a prime position & looks like a quaint little eatery pulled straight out of the pages of brighton rock. the food was overpriced & not great at all. i enjoyed more of my water than i did the effort at a vegetarian brekkie. really, how can you make something so simple so poorly? even the poached eggs on their soggy toast failed. they had been so tightly wrapped for poaching that the yolk exploded off the plate & into my lap when cutting. my lunch companion ordered a souvlaki style wrap, which for some reason involved so much generic bbq sauce it could have been mistaken for the remnants of an oil change. service wasnt particularly great either. wait to be seated sign only to be led outside & abandoned to choose our own table whilst staff conversed. some staff were trying, others just had poor attitude. left hungry & disappointed.

i'd heard "good food, shocking service" before we went here so i knew what to expect - and i wasn't disappointed. the food and coffee here is great! nice menu, well presented plates, and very well cooked. i really enjoyed it! where this place struggles is with the service. they seem overstaffed, yet nobody actually serves customers! when we arrived we waited about 10 minutes to be acknowledged while the staff walked right past us. you need to grab a waitress when you need something as they seem to avoid the tables. even when we went to pay, i stood at the register while the 2 girls behind the counter finished their private conversation for a few minutes, and i wasn't helped until i interrupted them and asked them to take my money! so with all that said - the food is 10/10.... the service is 3/10.
