over there, that's that place on the other side of the bay bridge. for those of us who live in the city, over there can sometimes be difficult to muster up the energy to get to. from trying to rustle up a car to battling bridge traffic to wading through the bart crowds to finding out bart doesn't even stop in emeryville--it feels tiring and a bit of a hassle. but every now and then the so and i, usually on a sunday, feel the need for a visit to an overly large target and maybe a swing through ikea, just because.foodchoices in that little area can be uninspiring. from the cafeteria at ikea to the chain places at that strip mall cum main street thing next door, they are not exactly the off the beaten track eats i like to look for. however, there is a small outpost nestled somewhere between the super furniture store and the i need to pick up some household supplies stores, it's called rudy's can't fail cafe and we usually end up there since we don't want to drive around oakland looking for another place to eat. yep, those are our standards, plus it is a diner and you know i'm totally into those.

they failed!. i have been telling my dad about this place for so long after reading about it on yelp so we finally stopped in for lunch. i knew what kind of place it was and wasn't really sure if i wanted breakfast or lunch since both were recommended. as we walked in we were sat at a booth that was not wiped down and a little tight of a fit but we dealt with it.

right away my dad commented on all of the tattoos and i pretty much expected it after hearing about the place but every customer seemed to have one as well. this pretty much became a game for us to try to find someone without a tattoo but as expected for the area we couldn't. i have a tattoo myself but i have never seen so many in one dining establishment at one time. it's a great place for people watching i'll give em that.

when our server arrived i ordered the pulled bbq chicken sandwich with a mixed green salad and my dad got a short stack of pancakes. we made it quick and pretty simple but one minute later our server came back to clarify if i ordered the pork or chicken and that i wanted fries. i said the chicken and salad and he asked if vinaigrette was ok like it's the only thing that was available to me.

when ourfoodarrived my dad got 2 nice looking pancakes and my plate was big but mostly covered with salad and produce for my sandwich. the chicken was poring out so this looked good but as i took off the bun i noticed it was all on one side of the bun and there really wasn't alot of meat at all. the bun was not what i expected either as it was a small hamburger sized sesame bun. this sandwich was small and not an item worth almost $10. it came with a side of coleslaw that was totally bland so i put it on my sandwich to enhance both. as i said the plate was covered with mixed greens and barely had any vinaigrette to make it even edible. the only perk here was they gave me about 10 pickles that i put on my sandwich and made it a little better but they need more meat and a much fancier bun for this sandwich.

as for the pancakes they had good flavor with the syrup but seemed average and on the doughy side. my dad is a huge pancake lover and they definitely failed in his book. i'm not clear on the exact price of the two pancakes but i can tell you that you can get a better price and tastier pancakes elsewhere.

as we finished up we asked to get the check when our server had a chance but it seemed there was not a chance with us. we watched him put in an order on the computer and take orders from two tables before we finally dropped a $20 bill on the edge of the table and he finally grabbed it to make change and bring our bill. i have had my experience in restaurants and i know people get busy but you can make time for something like a bill and we noticed there really was no serious meltdown he was having.

all together we really weren't impressed with rudy'sfoodand service. the menu looks great and has some good ideas but it's overpriced for sure. everyone has different experiences so try em out and hope they don't fail with you.

don't let the small building fool you as you walk in and get welcomed by loud music and tons of customers. i visited twice, both times very busy. even at 1030 at night on a monday night it was hopping. i received poor service however it seemed as if they were severely understaffed. thefoodwas great however, how hard is it to make a good turkey reuban? they did comp my beer because of the service however. good place if you're looking for a sandwich or tofu dishes. they also have a wide range of specials everyday and they serve breakfast all day long. if your looking for a good late night dinner go to rudy's, they're open until 1 am every night.

off my list. i used to love this place. the last two times, the service andfoodwere not worth the wait or the price.
the fish and chips were just bad! my guests did not enjoy theirs either. so many other places, let this one go.

wow, amazing fries and ambiance. i went to rudy's in 2007 with two friends from college, and we had a great time. it was not crowded, our waiter was attentive and had awesome tattooed sleeves, and thefoodwas great. i had a veggie taco salad, sans sour cream, and it came in one of those lovely fried tortilla bowls that i absolutely cannot resist. the fat tire on tap was a bonus, and my friend insisted i try the french fries--which were amazing! we were talking about them long after we'd left the restaurant.

i live in the city, so the location is a bit inconvenient for me, but i really wish i'd known about this place when i lived in the east bay!
