large parties beware. if you're trying to find a place for a large group, this is not it. we had a bachelorette party of 9 late 20 somethings and thought this restaurant would be a great option right on the river, but were mistaken. never have i felt so uncomfortable after the manager told us that she'd hoped we'd quiet down, but since we didn't she was forced to come over to say something since so many ppl complained. i've attended many larger parties at restaurants, and we were no different than the typical group when it comes to level of noise. fyi, a group of 9 ppl won't be a quiet group no matter which way you spin it.... either have a private room or suggest weeatsomewhere else. thank you for bringing our bachelorette to the verge of tears. the one bright star in this entire experience was our lovely waitress who was the only person who didn't make us feel uncomfortable and whom was very prompt and attentive with her service. it's a shame because the food was very delicious, but be forwarned, if you are attending in a large group, you will be too loud for this restaurant.

after reading some of the negative reviews, i was a little hesitant to try the place for a business dinner, but one of my dining companions was sold on this place. now, i am sold as well. we started with the peel &eatcajun shrimp, spicy but not overpowering, then i had an ok cesar salad, but the dish of the night was the shrimp & grits, which i did not order, but was big enough to share among the three of us. i had the scallops, which were cooked to perfection. the rice was a little dry, but that left room for more shrimp & grits! our third had the catch of the day, mahi-mahi, his favorite fish, which he thoroughly enjoyed. service was friendly and relaxed. definitely deserves four (4) stars.

my family and i were in town visiting from atlanta this past weekend, strolling up and down river street in search of a really good dining experience - a step up from the one we had the night before at fiddlers. (the service was good, but the food was okay.) we decided to go with rocks on the river, more specifically after seeing that it scored a 4.0+ right here on zomato. although the restaurant seemed mostly empty upon arrival (sunday evening), we were told that it'd be a 15 minute wait. no problem, especially since we were welcomed to pass the time by their rooftop bar until our table was ready. the weather was nice, the view was awesome, and the waitress who came to assist us was friendly and ready to take our drink and appetizer orders. we were contemplating whether we wanted to just stay up there and eat, or go back downstairs, where we had wider menu options to choose from. as soon as our 15 minutes were up, we decided toeatdownstairs. chad, our waitor, was friendly, and took our drink orders. (mind you, the restaurant is still fairly empty.) and for the next 1.15 hrs, that's all he did - kept refilling our drinks - probably to fill us up and detract from the fact that we still hadnt received our dinner orders yet. and it worked, because we didn't notice how much time had passed in between good conversation. eventually we started taking note of people who had come in after us, and how they were in and out. now i dont know if its because our party was a little darker then everyone else there, (although i didnt get that vibe from the restaurant) or if it was because 6 of us were splitting the bill 4 ways, and chad felt it would affect his tip - all in all it was totally inexcusable. the food finally came out, and it took us about 15 minutes to finish eating and paying for our meals, which they deducted $52 from total. it was good but not great, and it was warm - as if it had been ready for some time - waiting to be served. if not for the wait, id pob give it a 3.0. would i come back again? if i couldn't find an awesome rooftop experience elsewhere, maybe! for views, drinks, appetizers ... but to dine in the main restaurant? of course not!! that wait was terrrrribbbllleeeeee!!! especially on a very chill sun, where for the most part, not too many people were. the roof was where the crowd was - i guess there were more than a few reasons for that. the busy sat before, maybe id understand the wait, and even then, an 1.15 is ridiculous! but a quiet sun evening?? we got there at 7:30, left around 9ish!!! i guess my advice would be one or more of the following: (1) dont have chad as your waitor, (2) be of lighter complexion and/or (3) dont split your check 4+ ways. the end. ☺☺☺

\as we were looking for a nice place for dinner, jo was facebooking with one of her friends about savannah.  i heard what was written and thought that her friend suggested that weeatat rocks on the river (in the grand bohemian).  i booked reservations and was feeling pretty good about myself.  as we walked into the lobby of the grand bohemian (which is a great looking hotel, by the way) from bay street, she said “i thought we were going to vick’s.”   i explained that the fb message she read to me mentioned rocks on the river.  she pointed out that it did, as a point of reference to get to the other place.  doh! there are two “rocks” restaurants in the grand bohemian – on the river, which is, literally, on the river, right on river street and on the roof, which is on the roof.  (i hope they didn’t pay much to the marketing company that came up with those names.)

nice variety in the menu.. so, rocks has a good sized menu covering a lot of ground. it had an okay wine list and a standard cocktail list. while the very attractive servers do their job well, the transition and communication from servers to runners needs a little help. i watched the table next to me failed to be marked for steak. their main came before their salad, and my starter plates were not cleared before my main came. two tables down from me was more of the same. their food came while they were still eating their starters. i really hate it when a kitchen uses "timing" from course to course rather than having the servers call for the next course to be fired and the table cleared and/or marked.

but, the food is good. the spatzel and chicken was rather good, it reminded me of my childhood. the she crab soup was also rather nice with a fair amount of crab albeit the soup was really thick, almost like a puree. overall i must throw this one on the pile of places toeatin savannah.

bad service!!! i waited 1 hour toeatwhen the hostess told me it would be 20 minutes. the hostess was rude. people all around were walking out because they were waiting so long. the hostess didn't seat people for about 1 hour and there was about 10 open tables. once i sat down i ordered soup and it was taken off of the table before i even had a chance toeathalf of it. the grouper was greasy, the mashed potatoes were hard, and the overall experience was bad. i will never go back. it is not worth the price!

i found no need toeatanywhere else. savannah is one of my favorite cities to visit. there are so many restaurants to choose from, yet while staying at the kessler bohemian hotel, i opted for the hotel restaurant, rocks on the river. at first i was not really expecting much, just a quick bite upon my arrival. however, i was so pleasantly surprised at the quality of food you could not have convinced me this was a hotel restaurant. during my five day stay in savannah, during which i covered the entire historic district on foot, passing many restaurants - i chose rocks on the river for all my dining experiences. i loved the fact i could sit outside on the riverfront, as the daytime and nighttime views are equally spectacular. all the dishes i tried were extremely fresh and layered with flavor. braised veal shank lasagna topped with fried egg was one of my favorites. i also loved the shrimp and grits. most delicious sauce with generous, plump fresh shrimp. they even take something as simple as a burger and bring it up a notch - i had mine with blue cheese and it was one of the best burgers i ever had. you just know they aren't using any cheap, common ingredients - the taste is spot on! i met the chefs and they are all warm and welcoming - very accommodating and are anxious to ensure you enjoy your meal. the service was outstanding. don't pass on the desserts - you will really miss out on something special. they offer a praline, ice cream pie that is out of this world. be sure to ask your server how they make this, because the step-by-step description of how they arrive at this amazing creation will have you tempted to skip the entree entirely and just jump to dessert! i love this restaurant and even though savannah has some of the best restaurants in the country, during this stay i saw no reason toeatanywhere else.

one of the beast meals we had in savannah. as i'm gluten free, i had a hard time finding tasty meals, but our waitress and the chef here were so very helpful. i started with the side salad with balsamic vinaigrette. it was great, though i wish i had realized it had almonds as i'm slightly allergic. but i ate it anyways bc the dressing and feta was so good! then i ordered the peel andeatshrimp with a side of green beans. the beans were fresh and pretty good, but the shrimp- they were simply delicious! best shrimp i had all week. my husband had the french dip as he isn't gluten free and really enjoyed it. also his potatoes were great. highly recommend rocks!

couldn't ask for more. just a wonderful experience. the prices are fair for the quality, quantity, and area. the food is flavorful, vibrant in color, and plated beautifully (even for lunch). what impresses me more is the staff. all were friendly, and the server was knowledgeable about the plates, recommendations, and even tried to get a recipe for us from the chef. if you love good food, eathere. if you love fine dining experiences, eathere. if you want to dine in a restaurant with a beautiful view, eathere. if you want run of the mill restaurant chain food, go across the street! if i were to even think of criticizing anything, it is that for any sweet tea lovers, although the sweet tea is adequate, it is not made as you are use to. the sweet tea is unsweet tea with a bar sweetener added which gives it a watery taste. but the easy fix is to order a sweetwater 420! enjoy.

glad we went in. we drove into savannah for a day from vacationing in hilton head. we parked close to this restaurant not knowing where we were going toeatlunch, but we were all hungry. this was the 1st menu that we read and it sounded really good and the restaurant was pretty cool, i think it's part of a hotel?? i had the roasted chicken chopped salad, it was delicious, everyone had something different and enjoyed it. the fries were really good, too. my boyfriend and i were the only ones drinking, we highly recommend the margaritas. i would love to go back to savannah and try some other restaurants, but i would definitely go back here.

yum!. so good! my husband and i really enjoyed our dinner here. it was raining so we weren't able to sit on the rooftop, but we loved the comfortable atmosphere that the restaurant had. i ordered the pulled chicken chopped salad and loved it! the little bits of dates in the salad were a nice, sweet treat. my husband ordered the spatzli and chicken and it had a great flavor. we would definitelyeathere again!
