burger goodness. i had heard aboutriversidelunch from various burger blogs, so with anticipation we made our way from our visit at monticello.

the restaurant is spacious, clean, and staffed by relatively friendly waitresses. service was fast. the fries and onion rings not too special--they could use seasoned salt.

the burger was tasty, and just the right size. the patty had a nice crispness to it.

lots of locals seem to eat there, making it feel small-town. i'd recommend stopping by for a bite to eat. nice and close to area attractions.

riverside lunch, f yeah. theriversideshould be on the foodie list of best burgers. category: greasy old-school cheeseburger. no thick kobe beef pattiers, newp.

order a double bacon cheeseburger lettuce tomato mayo or mustard. feel free to hold the ltm. otherwise, you really haven't eaten at the riverside, cause that's their trademark. that n' nascar n' sweet waitresses n' cold domestic beer (i'm with the 39-year regular who misses the old place down by theriverside/ down by theriversidethough. laundry, burgers, & ammo--one stop shoppin'!)

if that doesn't sound like your thing, well, now ya' know. you are missing out on a damn fine cheeseburger though....

those were the days.riversidelunch has been in business since 1935, making it the oldest, or at least one of the oldest, grills in charlottesville. i have eaten there for about 39 years. it was once a generally local establishment, a " beer parlor" as my mother would call it, and was decidedly working-class. women and children, of course had no place: my father would get the food and bring it out to us in the car. the original location was down on the industrial river st. in my opinion, the burgers were better at the old place, likely because they used a well-seasoned 1930s grill. a fire took care of that. the burgers are, however, the best around and my touchstone for what a hamburger should be. go minimalist and avoid the urge to " gourmet" your burger: get a cheeseburger with mayonnaise, or a plain hamburger with mustard. in the old days they liberally applied salt and pepper to the patties, so to achieve a more authentic taste, add them. also, the french fries are fantastic, and if you seasoned salt, it's on the table. oh, for the grey formica!
