lovely family diningexperiencewith good food, lovely friendly service and a slightly differentexperienceto the usual.   the fish curry and satay (which is on several dishes in the rijstafel option) were standouts for us.

really enjoyed my diningexperiencehere. opted for the supreme rijsttafel. really enjoyed all the dishes. the coffees were a treat as well. being a nz born dutch girl, i was really excited to try this place out (dutch food). super filling, managed to finish all the dishes but could hardly move. love to go back if i am back in napier again.

rated no. 1 on tripadvisor, it shouldn't be. bland overcooked and stewed food, particularly the vegetables. not at all myexperienceof se asian food.
i suggest the reason for the high ratings may be the novel way of serving lots of little dishes at once. quite anexperiencefor people who haven't had the privilege of travelling to se asia and trying the regional cuisines. my suggestion would be, avoid it and ask a local where to eat.

we had an excellent diningexperienceon what must be the busiest night of the year in napier, the saturday of art deco weekend. two of the four us are vegans and we really appreciated the attention to detail by the owners, chefs and wait staff. it was a delicious, tasty, very filling meal for the vegos and for the meat eaters who, it has to be said, were very happy to tuck into the vego dishes as well. we polished off the lot which, unfortunately, left no room for dessert. thanks. we look forward to returning.

we ate at restaurant indonesia for my niece's birthday after swimming with sharks at the aquarium. the restaurant staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. we had the supreme rijsttafels which was a feast of multiple indonesian dishes including seafood and meat dishes. it was amazingly delicious and a wonderfulexperienceas we had not ever had indonesian food before. we highly recommend this restaurant. a++++++++++ :d

what a uniqueexperienceit is here! we had a great meal, with a nice choice of wine to match the food - thanks kees for the recommendation! of course we had to try the rijsttafels (had the meat version) and it was definitely worth the visit!! so lovely to be able to try a range of flavours and mix of vegetables and meat - it was all so tasty! will definitely be back, only have good things to say :)

oh the food, the atmosphere, the waiting staff are all to dine for.
we have had family, friends and just a intimate dinner for two.

my partner and i were wandering past restaurant indonesia while we were visiting napier this weekend. as we walked past we smelt the most amazing smells coming from this restaurant. we were looking for somewhere special to spend my birthday meal and decided we would give the fancy pants winery places a miss and book into this place the following day. we were so pleased we did! from the moment you enter the place you feel welcome and the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. we are both foodie people and can be quite critical at times as we are cooks ourselves. this met all our expectations. i only went in to have a nasi goreng but was very pleased i changed my mind to the rijsttafel which is a selection of small plates of indonesian food. it was anexperiencei will not forget. we will definitely travel back down from auckland to have it again - it was that good!
what was good about it? the food, the atmosphere, the waiter and the host of the place who didn't rush us and gave us good advice such as to take our time when we ate and to not rush to leave once we had finished and to take as long as we wanted to enjoy ourselves at our table.
all i can say is well done - i don't write reviews but i am very pleased to write this one. well done to everyone involved in this little gem!!! leanne & paul

an extremely tasty food sensation coupled with excellent service!

we had the rijsttafel supreme. the food came out very quickly and the description of each dish, by the waiter, was very helpful. there was plenty of food to feed the army of people we took with us. a very pleasantexperiencewas had by all.

my wife and stumbled on this restaurant because it was programmed into the speed dial of our hotel telephone. i checked it out on tripadvisor and i couldn’t believe my eyes.
we were greeted by a warm and smiling face and told about the indonesian diningexperiencethat is rijsttafel (rice table). all was explained and in no time at all, we were immersed in exotic foods and the aromas and the textures, that are an essential part of indonesian dining culture.
the accolades are true and there is not much that hasn’t been said. it was a truly unique diningexperienceand it is one that you should not miss.
our rijsttafel was around twenty small ‘experiences’, plus condiments, plus rice that are delivered in small dishes and kept warm on the table in special heaters. you sample at your leisure the wonderful array of foods that you have in front of you.
make sure that you allow plenty of time for this pleasure filledexperienceand make sure that you are hungry.
thank you joss and kees, the next time we are in napier will be the next time we will visit your establishment. your restaurant is a diamond and we can see why it has been going since 1983.

fantastic location and service. the variety of dishes in the rijstafel was very impressive. great all round diningexperience- we love it. only minus was that for me food could have been a bit spicier.

going to this lovely restaurant is like going to a friends' home to eat a wonderful dinner that is made by caring people that make you feel welcome. the rijsttafel is anexperiencein both taste and social enjoyment. lots of different small tastes of delightful flavours. eating and chatting while gazing at the beautiful views of the ocean makes your dinnerexperienceone to talk about long after you've been there. thanks jos and kees for taking good care of us and our friends!

we had a super dinningexperiencefor 8 of us choosing the meat and fish risttafel- ummm not sure of my spelling. fabulous array of dishes, each with different texture, flavour, everything was fresh and full of flavour, i just kept on eating and eating. totally recommend this delightful little restaurant.

a meal at restaurant indonesia is a very pleasantexperienceand one that does not hurt the pocket too much. both food and wine are reasonably priced and of good quality.
the service is superb and the atmosphere pleasant and enjoyable.
