the food washotwhich is a plus. idly tasted weird. looks like some preservative added to prevent the batter from spoilage. sambar and coconut chutney were good. vadai was good. size of idly and vadai has been reduced but cost increased since im a regular customer.

one of the legendary outlets which stood by the test of time. one of the most underrated breakfast places in chennai with no bragging. before moving into the review i'd like to mention the cons of this place since i'd like to finish the review on a high.
they don't have any parking space, only 3 tables with hardly 4 chairs for each table. the ambience is cramped up but the service stands out to deliver the ko punch.
.
as i entered the place, i was welcomed with a wide smile and was shown the spot to be seated. hats-off to their service despite the crowd.
first up, we went after their hot, fluffy idlies. it was straight from the pot with the right sour flavor to it. both their coconut and kaara chutney were perfect and it tasted similar to the homemade ones.
the vada emerged out as the clear winner since it wasn't oily but damn crispy on the outside and slushy on the inside. it had the right amount of salt and pepper to balance it out on the taste buds.
the people out their were courteous enough to serve pongal on the house even though they had initially ran out of it. one scoop of the buttery pongal is enough to make us feel woah, sleepy. full marks to it. to end up the brekkie was theirhotpiping filter coffee. that would sum up the whole meal to bid sayonara to this amazing spot.
.
p.s.: disappointed to not have taken any photos owing to the crowd
.

rayar's mess - a 80+ year old pitstop at mylapore chennai is famous for their pongal , idly and vadai!

sure shot a complete show stealer.

the flavour of pongal is unbeatable and well balanced with spices.
the pongal litterally melts off in your mouth along with chutney 😍

thehotpiping idli's turned out to be so soft , vada was so crispy and well fried inside.

such a blissful place to visit when you are at chennai.

this place did not live up to the hype created by locals. firstly, their sambar is probably the worst i’ve ever had- it’s practically water with some turmeric, salt and tomatoes. very poor taste. secondly, their green chilli chutney is basically mashed green chilies that leave a very u pleasanthottaste on the tongue with hardly any flavor. however, i would definitely not stop eating their vada- spot on crispness and flavor. we only order from rayar’s when we need a bulk number of vadas at home.
