one of the legendary outlets which stood by the test of time. one of the most underratedbreakfastplaces in chennai with no bragging. before moving into the review i'd like to mention the cons of this place since i'd like to finish the review on a high.
they don't have any parking space, only 3 tables with hardly 4 chairs for each table. the ambience is cramped up but the service stands out to deliver the ko punch.
.
as i entered the place, i was welcomed with a wide smile and was shown the spot to be seated. hats-off to their service despite the crowd.
first up, we went after their hot, fluffy idlies. it was straight from the pot with the right sour flavor to it. both their coconut and kaara chutney were perfect and it tasted similar to the homemade ones.
the vada emerged out as the clear winner since it wasn't oily but damn crispy on the outside and slushy on the inside. it had the right amount of salt and pepper to balance it out on the taste buds.
the people out their were courteous enough to serve pongal on the house even though they had initially ran out of it. one scoop of the buttery pongal is enough to make us feel woah, sleepy. full marks to it. to end up the brekkie was their hot piping filter coffee. that would sum up the whole meal to bid sayonara to this amazing spot.
.
p.s.: disappointed to not have taken any photos owing to the crowd
.

the food is so average :( i wonder why is the place so “ spoken high of”. with limited seating (16 at one sitting) and limited menu ( basically twobreakfastdishes) and a staff who repeatedly serve you food as such to make sure you eat fast to accommodate other customer’s. i do not understand how would one enjoy the food:(
i cannot begin to explain the lack of taste in their food despite their additional charges for podi, ghee and thick chutney:(‘
the sambar was a total failure :( the kara chutney is just green chillies!
and i thought the place was supposed to served authentic:( what a shame:(

it is a total breakfastdisappointment!

we had each item available forbreakfastand we were most disappointed with everything- from the sour idly to the watery pongal , the overly fried vadas to unbalanced chutney!

even the coffee was not steaming hot, though the taste is good!
one can enjoy the coffee only standing out as they bave to serve other customers:(
and if you are okay with all this ..! then go ahead!!

after a morning walk at marina, went on to havebreakfastin this very famous and very old eatery called rayars mess.
it is little difficult to locate, even i missed once and then google maps helped me out to reach this place.
located in a really small street in mylapore, but with crowd spilling out on streets to havebreakfastthere...
they serve only 4 items in the morning- idly, vada, pongal, coffee.
i had 2 idly 2 vada and a coffee. along with idly vada, they serve coconut chutney, sambar, kara chutney. we have an option to have thick coconut chutney but at an extra charge.
taste i must say, was as good as zomato reviews
of this eatery....
definitely a must try.
will try their pongal next time..
cost for this was rs. 70
