quilon - south india's best !!. i have now been to quilon on at least 3 times which normally prompts me to start offering an opinion on places. each time, i have been there i have been consistently impressed by the culinary skills of sriram aylur's team in the kitchen. tucked away next to the st. james hotel, this restaurant despite being given a michelin star has not lost it's charm. the staff are excellent and professional and the cooking show cases the best of south india. most run of the mill "indian restaurants" are in fact bangladeshi run places and the food has been anglicized to the point where everything is drowned in heavy oily sauces with different levels of spiceyness. quilon is the opposite. this isindiancooking at it's very best - be it the chicken mangalore or fish dishes. the uppam ( a flat rice based bread- typical of south india) is light and fluffy and along with the vegetable side dishes . the wine list is extensive and complimentsindianfood well, though there are those that feel only companion forindianfood is beer. whilst there are more well knownindianrestaurants in london, it's worth searching this place out if you want to try out outstanding southindiancuisine. price wise this is at top end ofindianfood prices but then again you cannot expect high quality food and attentive service in pleasant unhurried surroundings for any less in central london. highly recommended.

quilon is a suave and sophisticatedindianrestaurant that has held a michelin star since 2008. it specialises in a modern interpretation of traditional cuisine from the south-west coast of india. foods from this region are usually lighter and have more delicate flavours than the richer and denser foods of northern indian. i myself am an ardent fan of northindiancuisine - moghul court, punjabi and lucknow cuisines in particular. however, i really do believe that the south-west coastal food offered by quilon to be excellent.
the restaurant itself is very contemporary and features artwork by theindianartist paresh maity.
asianhawk recommends: the black cod with tempered asparagus and french beans and the seafood in mustard and coconut cream.

a michelin star restaurant with south westernindianfood - never heard about. and to hear raving reviews from a european colleague was surprising.

so we ended up at dinner there. and for two and a half hours. we didn't realize how good it was. the small poppadums with both spicy and sweet chutneys was great to start. the crab cakes and mini dosas were good. the black cod blew me away. the wine was great. and the chilli sorbet and the chocolates at the end with cappuccino rounded off a delightful meal. strongly recommend this one to everyone in london.

was there for a business dinner and as most of our partners were german and american who wanted to tasteindianfood our obvious choice had to be quilon , the ambience was sober yet with the hustle and bustle of a busy restaurant , food was good for all that we ordered and surely a taste closer to southernindianwas savoured .

perhaps it was our choice of dishes which in retrospect was not well considered but quilon was well below expectations. i do not understand how this place has a michelin star. we ordered kothu lamb and cauliflower chili fry for starters and venison chili fry and crispy okra as mains. the crispy okra was batter fried. it was far too heavy-handed for such a delicate vegetable. the venison was dry and over-spiced. i think they used the same batter for the cauliflower as they did for the okra. the kothu lamb was good. however, none of these come to the level of what is expected of a michelin starred restaurant. you can get similar quality at guglee in north london. step up your game, quilon or you will lose the star. really you need to employ some modern cooking techniques, deconstruct and reinterpretindiancuisine.

( if you have a taste for india specially southindianfood). would recommend try the mini masala dosa, baked black cod, lamb biryani. staff are extremely courteous. 5/5 on every aspect of a restaurant.

very impressed by this restaurant did not know what to expect as it was last minute booking.

they were very friendly from the telephone booking to the waiters at the restaurant.

we ordered quite a lot for two people we started with the masala dosa for starters and for mains we went for prawns masala ( excellent a must try ) and lobster butter sauce ( boring nothing much happening catered to the english ).

as well the mango curry was very nice and the okra fried both were very good !

the tomato rice as well is very nice and a must try.

over all a very nice place for your southindianfood !!

food 4/5
service 4/5
ambience 3.5/5

with the redevelopment of victoria i’ve been excited to tell you about new places such as m victoria street, kouzu and uni, but there’s a high quality restaurant in victoria which i’ve never reviewed…in fact i’d never actually been there. though quilon has been in victoria since 1999 and has held a michelin star since 2008, in my ten years of living in the area i was still yet to try theindianrestaurant.our visit was sort of accidental. it was christmas eve and we’d popped to the famous goring hotel for a glass of festive fizz, our intention was then to go for a light bite of sushi at kouzu, located directly opposite the hotel. kouzu was closed but we were in high spirits and wanted something a bit different so we headed to quilon! with a michelin star to pre-empt opinion and a location in the luxurious taj hotel, it was clear quilon wasn’t going to be your standard curry and we were looking forward to trying the high qualityindianfood.

this post contains mostly photos of our visit to quilon. a michelin  rated restaurant, in- london, england. there they serve south-west coastalindiancuisine using perfect ingredients and technique which blend old traditions and modern tastes. their menu is a unique blend of ethnic and progressive dishes with seafood at its heart. most dishes are for sharing from the offerings of meat, poultry and vegetarian. the restaurant sounds the division bell for lords, ladies, ministers and members of parliament when a division is imminent. for the general public there is free wi-fi. we drank tea and ate poppadoms which came with a nice selection of 5 sauces and chutneys; cauliflower chilli fry (gobi kempu bezule) - crispy fried cauliflower tossed, yogurt, green chilli, curry leaves; seafood broth, mixed seafood in coriander flavoured broth; quilon salad comprised of pink grapefruit, roasted beetroots, patty pan, mixed salad leaves, goji berry, honey dressing; *pepper shrimps - batter fried shrimps cooked in a fiery masala; hot intermezzo palate cleanser; malabar paratha - soft refined flour dough thin sheets folded to form layered bread, skillet cooked pure ghee; crispy fried squid with spice pounded shrimps; fluffy steamed rice; mangalorean chicken (kori gassi) succulent pieces of chicken cooked in finely ground fresh coconut spices; quilon fish curry - cubes of halibut simmered in coconut, chilli, and raw mango sauce; *malabar lamb biryani - lamb cooked with traditional malabar spices in a sealed pot, with basmati rice; plain yoghurt. we each had dessert but i was distracted by nine month old granddaughter and forgot to take images of them.

quilon is quite a sophisticated, upmarket michelin starred restaurant at 51 buckingham gate. quilon provides modern south-coastal inspired food from india, their specialities include lobster butter pepper fry, crab cakes and aapams.

i went to quilon during my stay at the iconic st james court hotel. i was cravingindianfood with a good fine dining experience and thought of quilon instantly since it was just 2 minutes away from my hotel. the restaurant is beautiful from the inside, i could not help but notice the amazing art inside the restaurant they had paintings from popularindianartists like parish mehti and s.h raza.

i ordered a portion of the crabcakes, and a seafood platter that consisted of crab cakes, prawns and a fish i think the platter was called the fisherman's catch, the crab cakes were nice they were seasoned well and cooked to perfection. the rest of the platter was very average and lacked flavor. for mains i ordered the lobster and some kind of chicken curry that i cannot recall with malabar paranthas. the lobster was cooked very well and tasted very good, the chicken was a disaster i did not like the chicken at all it was very heavy and lacked spice.

i would only go to quilon for the lobster and the crab cakes the rest of the food is average..

....quilon is a swanky southindianrestaurant in westminster’s buckingham gate. it makes the elaborate claim that it is “the home of traditional home-style south-west coastalindiancuisine,” which despite being incredibly specific isn’t strictly true because the home of that food is actually the south-west coast of india. despite their website’s outlandish lies i decided to head to quilon for their recent relaunch, and give michelin star south-indian cuisine a try. the evening was held in celebration of a reopening after extensive refurbishment. quilon got all dressed up for the occassion. it’s now all very neutral, very relaxing and contemporary. i expect this was all done in honour of the young folk, who can’t bear that god awful wallpaper mostindianrestaurants seem to be cloaked in. (i know this because i am a relatively young folk and that wallpaper makes my toes curl.) the kitchen is headed up by distinguished head chef sriram vishwanathan aylur, who gained the restaurant its first michelin star in 2008 and has retained it to this day. it comes as no surprise, therefore, that the menu isn’t what you’d usually expect from a standardindianrestaurant. it’s all a bit experimental, a bit different, a bit… michelin. the evening’s culinary offerings came in the form of canapés and nibbles which were served over drinks as we were invited to cast our eyes over the quilon transformation. i have perfected the art of the canapé party, so took premium position early on in the evening. when at such a party one must first access where the canapés are coming from, and then intercept them before they reach the crowd. this is how to feast at a canapé party. this is what i did, and this is why i can tell you what everything tasted like. on offer were a range of south-indian nibbles. we started with lamb balls which packed a punch but weren’t overly impressive. things started to look up, though, when i saw these cauliflower cones. undeniably cute and deliciou
