quilon - south india's best !!. i have now been to quilon on at least 3 times which normally prompts me to start offering an opinion on places. each time, i have been there i have been consistently impressed by the culinary skills of sriram aylur's team in the kitchen. tucked away next to the st. james hotel, this restaurant despite being given a michelin star has not lost it's charm. the staff are excellent and professional and the cooking show cases the best of south india. most run of the mill "indian restaurants" are in fact bangladeshi run places and the food has been anglicized to the point where everything is drowned in heavy oily sauces with different levels of spiceyness. quilon is the opposite. this is indian cooking at it's very best - be it the chicken mangalore or fish dishes. the uppam ( a flat rice based bread- typical of south india) is light and fluffy and along with the vegetable side dishes . the wine list is extensive and compliments indian food well, though there are those that feel only companion for indian food is beer. whilst there are more well known indian restaurants in london, it's worth searching this place out if you want to try out outstanding south indian cuisine. price wise this is at top end of indian food prices but then again you cannot expect high quality food and attentive service in pleasant unhurried surroundings for any less in central london. highly recommended.

quilon is a suave and sophisticated indian restaurant that has held a michelin star since 2008. it specialises in a modern interpretation of traditional cuisine from the south-west coast of india. foods from this region are usually lighter and have more delicate flavours than the richer and denser foods of northern indian. i myself am an ardent fan of north indian cuisine - moghul court, punjabi and lucknow cuisines in particular. however, i really do believe that the south-west coastal food offered by quilon to be excellent.
the restaurant itself is very contemporary and features artwork by the indian artist paresh maity.
asianhawk recommends: the black cod with tempered asparagus and french beans and the seafood in mustard and coconut cream.

a michelin star restaurant with south western indian food - never heard about. and to hear raving reviews from a european colleague was surprising.

so we ended up at dinner there. and for two and a half hours. we didn't realize how good it was. the small poppadums with both spicy and sweet chutneys was great to start. the crab cakes and mini dosas were good. the black cod blew me away. the wine was great. and the chilli sorbet and the chocolates at the end with cappuccino rounded off a delightful meal. strongly recommend this one to everyone in london.

was there for a business dinner and as most of our partners were german and american who wanted to taste indian food our obvious choice had to be quilon , the ambience was sober yet with the hustle and bustle of a busy restaurant , food was good for all that we ordered and surely a taste closer to southern indian was savoured .

went to quilon with high expectations but was disappointed. the prawn masala was good but chana masala was pretty average. the fish was overcooked and quite dry and this was their signature dish so that says something. the lemon rice was good. overall pretty average experience.

i went to this indian restaurant on my recent travel to london and boom ! i loved it in and out...it is a michelin star restaurant managed by taj so it is obviously higher end and expensive..but since i was staying in taj and this restaurant is rite next to hotel and since i am an indian it was a total blessing...food was perfect indian taste ...and so was ambience..i felt like being back home.

need to book a table 3-4 hours before. ordered the lamb biryani and mangalorean chicken. both were well cooked. for rice one can chose something other than plain rice for the mixed taste. the rasam also is a must to go well with the food. overall decent food and good ambience. slightly on the higher side as far as the price is concerned. 3/5.

perhaps it was our choice of dishes which in retrospect was not well considered but quilon was well below expectations. i do not understand how this place has a michelin star. we ordered kothu lamb and cauliflower chili fry for starters and venison chili fry and crispy okra as mains. the crispy okra was batter fried. it was far too heavy-handed for such a delicate vegetable. the venison was dry and over-spiced. i think they used the same batter for the cauliflower as they did for the okra. the kothu lamb was good. however, none of these come to the level of what is expected of a michelin starred restaurant. you can get similar quality at guglee in north london. step up your game, quilon or you will lose the star. really you need to employ some modern cooking techniques, deconstruct and reinterpret indian cuisine.

the main course featured seafood biryani - basmati rice studded with fish and shrimp, mixed with herbs, spices, and dried fruit - and sides of delicious fish curry, coconut with asparagus and snow peas, and yogurt sauce. also on the plate was a deep fried sesame okra. the vegetables were surprisingly simple and vibrant, and provided a nice crunchy juxtaposition to all the seafood.

warm ambience, enjoyed serenity - a good change from hustle bustle of most of the restaurants; good food but it should add more options on vegetarian side! hot rasam was refreshing. baked yogurt was excellent - not to be missed.
