pig & whistle tavern

a very satisfying friday lunch. my wife and i enjoyed a day in the dandenongs, including lunch at the pig & whistle. we just dropped in without a booking. it's a quaint tavern with an interesting old world ambience. the welcome from the staff was very friendly and efficient. we quickly had our selection of ciders and had ordered our meals. the waitress was very helpful in advising on serving sizes although we also had the assistance of photos on the urbanspoon site. we went for the signature dish of porkbellyand the good old reliable beer batter fish and chips. for a starter, we shared a plate of lemon pepper crumbed calamari with a greek style salad - very tasty. fortunately we shared, because it was a very generous serving for a starter. the main dishes were also quite generous in size. the fish and chips met our expectations; the porkbellywas very good but we have had more tender meat elsewhere. we were both "stuffed" but we wanted something sweet with coffee so we went with the sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce - really yummy. we took our time over the meal so the generous servings were not a strain on us but we skipped dinner tonight! service was attentive and friendly. the room was not too crowded; while the tables are close to each other, the background noise of the hum of conversation gave us some privacy in our own conversation. overall, we enjoyed our experience and will be back there for more.

great little gem located up in the dandenongs have been here numerous times and never disappointed all i can say is get the porkbellyit's amazing great selection of drinks and food a great little cozy place to visit on a cold night

i loved every bit of the roast porkbellyand garden salad. i also had a parma earlier in the year when i stayed up there. definitely my goto for dinner 😋

service wise- 3 stars. i had to get my own cutlery and water as there doesn’t seem to table service for those sitting outside, even though we were there at 11am and we were the third table there. disappointing.

food-4 stars. really like the huge serve of schnitzel and salad. enough for two people to share. schnitzel was moist in the middle and crunchy on the outside. yum! porkbellyon the other hand was tender, and the sauce went well with the mash.

we’d be back for sure, but hopefully this time we’d get proper table service.

worthwhile to check out in olinda. better than any other cafes in the area.

april 2018: still good , bring my mum there, love their pork rib but their nachos is so so. porkbellyis $26 for larger portion, worth it!
feb 2018: my hubby likes this place, said that their cooking is always consistently good. he gave a 4. however, surprisingly my kids are totally disappointed with their food. not sure is it because its the last day before the holidays or they thought that kids meals are not worth putting extra thoughts to them as the kids will not border. i am totally disappointed with them. my daughter likes the chips more than the fish, and my son said their food tasted liked they were cooked like mass-canteen food. furthermore, the banana shakes tasted so artificial, with banana syrup and milk....forget about the kids'meal. the adults' ones are actually really good. the "melt in your mouth" pork belly(small portion) is really filling for me and the steak my hubby order is really cook to perfection. we had their desserts before and find them quite good. overall they are worth it if you pick the right meals. price wise, on the high side but once a while, is good to spend a little for an enjoyable meal.

such friendly and accomodating service found at the pig and whistle. ordered the piggery platter, the small serving of the porkbellyand the chicken and veg pot pie. all parties very happy with everything that cane out of the kitchen. tasty and with decent prices! i would def rec this place to not just those driving by, but those willing to make a trip out :)

awesome kids meals, my daughter ordered porkbellyand veggies as her meal for $10 which we both thought was great value.  good option if you're a carnivore, not so great if you're a vegetarian.  service was wonderful, i would come back but only for a wine, fresh bread and for the kids to eat and play and save room for my veggies elsewhere.

our table was booked for 7.15pm and we were seated right away outside. we were completely neglegted for 20 mins and only by chance a waiter asked if the brownies were ours and i replied " no our order hasnt even been taken yet" shortly after a waitress came out and took our order at 7.40pm. our food arrived at 8.30pm. we ordered the porkbellywhich was nice but over cooked and the parma which was actually pretty good. overall 3 out of 5.

took my partner here for his 30th. he ordered the piggy parma which was huge and delicious. the ham was not too thick and every layer was perfect. i had the porkbellywhich was cooked to perfection and was perfectly matched with the beans and the yummiest of sauces. price was very reasonable for the size of the meal and the young lady that served us was super friendly. will definitely return :)

this always been my favorite, their roast porkbellyis indeed special, and i love their pesto bread and antipasto platter.
whenever i visit mt.dandenong then i will definitely visit this restaurant as well.
their service are always fast and friendly, would love to have their pesto bread rite now. yum!

after so many times we’ve been here and always ordered the same thing, this time we ordered something new and its delicious!
parmigiana with meatball :) yum!
ah and service were excellent as usual.

one of the reasons i like visiting the dandenong ranges - this place is great! we ordered the chicken parma, fish and chips , porkbellyand lemon lime and bitters - it all tasted great.  the portions are huge and the price is okay for the quality and size of the dishes.

i went here a few years ago with a friend and got the (crackly skin pork belly). i remember it wasn't that great and the skin wasn't crackly. i went back with the same friend today for lunch, she said it was hit and miss but this time it was a huge miss. we got the piggy platter and chips. the meat balls and porkbellywere dry and the antipasto all came out of jars but worst of all the bread was stale. the chips also look like they came out of the packet and the sour cream wasn't that nice. the highlight of our lunch was the cider. i feel bad giving this review because the people who worked there were nice but i have to be honest. next time we go for lunch in the mountains we'll go elsewhere

great pub, great food. my hubby and i eat here at least once a month, usually for lunch but sometimes with the kids for dinner. we have always found the food and service to be wonderful. i've sampled most of the menu, while my hubby loves the porkbellyand only ever orders that. the kids menu is great value and offers a good choice. we've never been disappointed with our visit and will continue to be regulars.
