phocking amazing. i've been going to pho hoa on 23rd st for a few years on and off with my best friend and have learned quite a bit. i never have to wait when i go there, the food is always amazing, and it tastes like they really put the effort into all their food. the smoothies are great, my favorite is avocado, but they're much better without the mushy tapioca beads.

pho 101 - the suzuki method. when i walk in pho hoa, i have flashbacks of college. i see four of us poor college students huddled around an extra large bowl of pho that cost around $7. i don't think i could not have survived college without pho.

if you have never experienced pho, a vietnamese soup with beef broth, rice noodles, and vegetables, pho hoa is a great place for you to start.

it can be intimidating to take the plunge and order your first bowl, especially if you are unfamiliar with se asian cuisine. part of the problem is all the questions that come to mind: what am i supposed to do with these bean sprouts, jalapenos, watercress, wedges of lime, and chinese basil? how am i supposed to pick them up with chopsticks? heck, how am i supposed to eat soup with chopsticks? what do i order? what is hoisen sauce, or this bottle of orange/red stuff? what is chinese basil anyway? why am i here?

a lot of these questions i never had to wrestle with, because in college the seniors would show the freshmen the ropes. perhaps you don't have a vietnamese friend to teach you. perhaps you don't have any friends who eat pho. no worries. pho hoa to the rescue.

the best part of this place is that it is full of natives, especially at lunch. spend 10 minutes watching folks eat. you will learn a lot. there are as many ways to eat a bowl of pho as there are bowls of pho. some piano teachers use the suzuki method in teaching, a method whereby the students mimic what the teacher does. this is what pho hoa provides. you can people watch and learn a lot.

a lot of americans are hesitant about tripe and tendon. that's ok. the p8 or p11 is a good place to start then, as rare steak, flank, and brisket are familiar to the usamerican palette.

the joy of pho hoa is the variety of their menu. in addition to their pho (beef rice noodle soup), they also offer pork clear noodle soup (hu tien), an egg noodle soup called mi (which i have never been a fan of), and also a pork udon noodle soup, which is excellent. when you start adding shrimp, squid, mussels, or bbq pork, the whole experience changes! it can be quite an adventure! the key is to have courage, step out, and experience the variety pho hoa offers.

cash only!

pho pho pho. i loved eating at pho hoa since i was little and really liked how they used non-watered down soup base and larger amounts of everything. now they've jacked up the price about $2.50 more and cut corners everywhere. if they had kept the same quality, i wouldn't mind the price increase.

i always order 1 or 2. there really is no difference and it all taste the same anyway.

what i don't like: the smell. it sticks to your clothes like no other. you will smell like pho all day long.

another note: every wonder why, when they are clearing tables, that the guy is extremely careful and tries not to disturb the uneaten bean sprouts/vegetables? it's cause they reuse em and just give it a quick spritz of water.

enjoy! i still love this place though

can you say, "comfort food"?. mmm. mmmmmm. mm. this pho is fo' real! i haven't had a lot of pho before i went to lien hoa, just mr. pho's and a few random other places, but i feel like i will never stray again. i ordered the "large", which was far too large for me, and ordered the p8 - rare flank, steak, and brisket. mmmm. it was absolute perfection; came out with a bit of pink in the center, and slowly cooked in the broth as i made my way down into the endless bowl of delicious, delicious soup. each order also comes with complimentary sides of lime, bean sprouts, jalapenos and some type of basily-minty leaf which i tore up copious amounts of and put into the soup. absolute pho perfection! my water was also refilled regularly, despite how busy the establishment was. i also ordered the crispy egg rolls which came with a tasty dipping sauce. i couldn't finish the bowl off, despite being hungry all day, but i felt more at ease and zen than i had in a long time. my new favorite comfort food!
