great place and great poboys! my friend and i both agreed that it was one of our best overall experiences in nola this trip. mike behind the bar explained how to order as soon as we entered. we decided to sit at the bar to order. we each ordered the regular size- one shrimp and one oyster. mike let us know that there was an off the menu large that could be split between two seafoods, thus saving us some money. throughout the meal he continued to check on us. really great guy! the poboys themselves were packed with seafood, not over breaded, and really flavorful. we loved the bread, especially. i had fries which were hot and seasoned perfectly. my friend had some zapps chips. can't go wrong with that. i'll definitely be back to try some other poboys, gumbo, etc.

definitely one of the best poboys i had in new orleans. regular size is more than enough. it gets very busy around lunch time but well worth the wait. reasonable price. fried shrimp poboy was really good. lots of shrimp.

while i don't know how their fried oyster or fried shrimp stacks up to other poorboy options in new orleans, i do know that the roast beef is nothing special. in particular, the lack of gravy bothered me. the fact that my bread was not absolutely sopping by the end of my meal was a significant indicator of the poorboy's average quality. in my opinion, any great roast beef poorboy should almost require the use of utensils in order to consume it.

also, the sweet potato fries were nothing special, and seeing as how this place started off as a bakery, i was very underwhelmed with the loaf of bread that comprised my poorboy.

overall, i found it to be overpriced and certainly not worthy of the accolades it has received.

with that being said, i very much enjoyed the outdoor seating and felt like i was dining at a true neighborhood establishment. perhaps i will give them another try and see how their oyster of shrimp poor boys stack up, but there are certainly better roast beef options out there.

taste: 7/10

cost: 6/10

dining area/decor: 8/10

customer service: 8.5/10

location: 8/10

at the corner of hagan and toulouse in mid-city at parkway bakery and tavern for “the best poor boy in town”, a neighborhood landmark since opening 1911. john opts for the parkway caprese and i munch on the golden fried catfish, both “dressed”. yum. double yum. a bit off the beaten path, but one of the better 'po-boy' offering ( of many) in nola

love them, but the roast beef is so over rated. kind of bitter. i would go with the fried shrimp, fried catfish, or oysters when they have them. make sure to get some remoulade from the little metal sauce bar in the corner across from the pickup counter.

the roast beef was good in 1949 and is still good in 2015!. yes i did eat there in 1949. the roast beef is still good but the i found it not such a pleasurable dining experience. noisy and dirty. very crowded but fast service. i probably will not go back because there are many more places just as good.

parkway bakery and tavern ended up being my favorite, partly because it was such a fun experience, but also because they truly had my favorite po'boys. because there were so many of us, we got to try so many menu items. i tried shrimp, french dip, roast beef, regular fries and sweet potato fries with gravy, fried pickles, and bread pudding for dessert. the shrimp was really good--they were fried perfectly, but could have used more sauce--but the roast beef was the real winner. it was so tender it was falling apart; it was like having a pot roast dinner on a sandwich.

we then got up and traveled to an insanely packed parkway bakery & tavern. when we arrived the line was literally out the door and there was a film crew recording a tv program. we basically sampled the entire menu, starting with their french dip po-boy (the best we had anywhere), the roast beef (very messy, better beef them domilise’s), alligator sausage (really unique flavor, well seasoned), fried shrimp (crunchy but a bit bland), surf & turf (roast beef and fried shrimp, insanely messy), fried pickles (the best i’ve had) and bread pudding (also some of the best i’ve ever had). we ended up slowly making our way back to the city and nearly passed out from a food coma.

fair. i liked it, but it wasn't as good as i thought it would be. had both surf and turf and the fried shrimp po boys. think i will stick with the single ingredient po boys. the roast beef is overwhelming. line was very long about 30 solid minutes. good food, but i don't know if i'd bother waiting that long again. i preferred the muffuletta at cochon's butcher.

the surf and turf poboy..... absolutely perfect, every restaurant in the city could learn a thing or two about these poboys.

there are so many poboys in the city so it’s hard to pick and choose where the “best” poboy is…my thoughts?

parkway for poor portions. parkway bakery & taverns portion sizes consistently decreased throughout the ten years that i was their regular customer. the large hamburger po-boy that i ordered from parkway bakery & tavern at 583 hagan ave. january 9th was a disappointment in comparison to the the first colossal hamburger po-boy they prepared for me about ten years ago. today, i am no longer a customer of parkway bakery because of consistently decreasing portion sizes and the scrawny hamburger po-boy that they prepared for me last night.

i do not recommend parkway bakery & tavern to anyone.
