fo0die dined as a guest of park street pasta andwineand as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.
a modern osteria located 9 minutes from southern cross station via tram 12 and close by to the beautiful old town hall. 2p parking is available on the street which has no limit after 6pm.
at the time we dined, the osteria was merely 7 weeks old and was already quite well established with a lot of locals filling up the tables as we dined into the night.
>> interior
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the restaurant is located at a corner but beware of the door that is right at the corner (it cannot be opened, trust us, we tried! the door is actually located on perrins st).
the decor is simple with proper curtains to the windows and high ceilings which gave us the formal dining room yet still with a casual atmosphere to it. the interior downstairs is cosy with wooden tables, chairs and flooring. a selection of tables is available; from bar tables near the door and bar to normal tables a step or two down from the bar.
upstairs is a 26 seater function room and the rest rooms.
>> food/drinks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the osteria offers awinelist which is served by the glass as well as by the bottle while the food menu is a single pager that lists a few items under each section of entree to share, pasta, mains, sides and desserts with a chef selection available for $60 per person.
between the two of us we had two shared entrees and a pasta each and this was more than enough.
starting off with the entrees, the octopus was beautifully presented (surprisingly!) with a beautiful tomato capsicum cashew sauce. we don't eat octopus often but it wasn't rubbery and wasn't too charred at all (barely). our other entree was an asparagus dish was served with a parmesan cream and bread crumb that was very crisp and made these otherwise simple vegetable entree, very interesting texture and flavour wise.
their pasta is freshly hand made daily on site and there is definitely a difference in the texture of the pasta which brought us back to our favourite restaurant in florence during our trip to europe, two years ago. the striking contrast of the tagliolini al nero (squid ink pasta) against the red slightly chilli sauce consisted of 'melt in your mouth' cuttlefish with the largest fresh de-shelled pippies we have ever seen (though be mindful of the odd sand here and there). while the pork bolognese carried a depth of pork flavour which we have not had in melbourne before served with thin pappardelle which were almost the width of half a lasagna sheet. both dishes were decent in serving size.
definitely one we will be suggesting to friends for italian!
