came here on a friday for a set menu on what ended up being an event night for the release of one of their single vineyard pinot noirs, for an overall very pleasant experience.
the night started with canapes and champagne on arrival, although after making ourselves less conspicuous by not hogging the space near the entryway were pretty much ignored by serving staff for the most part. felt like being at an undercatered wedding, in that we would have done better standing by the kitchen door. while we watched guests that arrived well after us on to their third champagne top-up and multiple rounds of canapes, we stood sullen and empty-glassed in the corner - oh the humanity! i eventually gathered the courage and wiped away my tears to go and ask for a top-up at the counter, only to be served something akin to champagne from a different half-bottle from the fridge that was well and truly gone.
despite my initial trepidations, the rest of the meal turned out to be very pleasant. the pours from the vineyard wines were generous, and the different courses were very good for the most part. there was a strong emphasis on game, with a fantastic pheasant dish, although a thick cut and very well-cooked venison course was a bit gamey even for me with my best game-face on.
aside from the earlier service, the rest of the night fared much better. serving staff were very pleasant, if not overly knowledgeable about the food they were serving - and i suspect that was because they had never tasted the food from the kitchen.
the setting was warm, in smallish wood-heavy room with views over some of the fines, as well as the barrel room within the winery itself. ample parking on site.
although i was pretty unimpressed with being ignored initially, then being served a sparkling wine that was anything but drinkable, my feelings aboutparingachanged over the course of the meal. a good choice for a winery lunch or dinner on the peninsula, and i will certainly be back at some time to give it another go.
