poor service; overpriced. went here for an anniversary on a friend's recommendation. won't be going back. the steak was alright, nothing fabulous, and the gnocchi was portioned in too large of pieces. however, the sauce the gnocchi was in was really good, as was the jus on the steak. great sauces on medicore entrees. it was around $100 to get out without any alcohol. wait service was slow and the place was packed.

very poor service; way too crowded for comfort. not good at pago re: service. we had a reservation but had to wait for 20 min for a table, and then they apologized and said they had given our table to another group who added people to their party without changing their reservation # in advance. we got screwed. so pago put the 3 of us at a 2-top, and i was squeezed so tight my back kept hitting a table behind me even with my chest up against our own table.

tighter still when 2 diners came over to chat for 15 minutes with the people at the table next to us. not pleasant to have strangers' butts in our faces during what should have been a classy dinner. the staff should have ushered them away after a minute or two in consideration of our already cramped situation.

then - we didn't get starters for 45 mins. no bread or anything for 45 mins! so hungry. had to point out it'd been 45 minutes and ask for bread. then - no entrees until 90 mins in! we were really hungry and uncomfortable. the staff gave us some free beets and free cookie-size carrot cake bites as a thank-you for putting up with everything. it really didn't make up for a sour experience.

the food was tasty...it just felt like an unpleasant endurance test of an evening. we paid far too much for such an uncomfortable, ill-paced dinner.

pago is way overrated. went to pago last night with friends. waiter was arrogant, thought he knew wine, but didn't.
my gnocchi was awful, my wife and friend ordered the seared tuna. my wife's was way over cooked (totally white) our friend's tuna was very cold in the middle. soup was bland. i have to admit that the lamb dish and the calamari were excellent though. this place is way overrated and we could have had a much nicer dinner for less money elsewhere. not going back ever.

i only review those restaurants that are either tremendously good or tremendously bad. this restaurant falls into the former category. come hungry and expect to stay a while. the service is wonderful, and the food is just as good. if you like chain restaurants, pago is bit for you. if, on the other hand, you like unique flavors, artisan food, and a comfortable posh atmosphere, you will thoroughly enjoy pago.

pago is a small, and somewhat trendy, restaurant in the 9th-and-9th neighborhood in salt lake city. it is one of the few restaurants in salt lake city that boasts a farm-to-table motto, which means that they strive to use as many ingredients from our local farms as possible. i've also heard it called a "low carbon diet" as well, though i don't prefer that term. pago opened in salt lake about 2 years ago and we've been meaning to try it since, but never really got around to it. it wasn't until a friend kelli, and fellow food blogger (check out her blog post of our recent outing at pago here ), raved about it that we really took it seriously. so, the hubby and i decided to check out the brunch menu along with our seasoned pago veteran kelli. upon entering pago, i was reminded of a really awesome little place we ate at in brooklyn called vinegar hill house which shares the farm-to-table motto. the décor is somewhat reminiscent of an old european country-side bistr

it was just okay.. food was okay, service was good, table was sticky.

i had the moroccan fried chicken and it was good enough, but i expected full moroccan flavors and it was rather bland. the mixed green salad with pretty purple haze carrots-also bland. the tuna crudo was the loveliest of the dishes. steak tartar...okay. the espresso profiteroles weren't espresso. the gelato was deeply chocolate and the sauce was a lovelychocolate, but the puff pastry was hard and i couldn't find the espresso flavor. nothing was bad, it was just okay...a bit underwhelming.

very disappointing. after hearing about how great pago is for what seems like forever, we decided to celebrate 2 birthdays there. the service was great, but of the 5 people in our party, only one really like their meal. the market salad had absolutely no flavor and that's pretty much how the whole meal went. i tasted 4 dishes and none of which were memorable. it seems like they relied too heavily on the flavors of the ingredients really complimenting each other, but none of the entrees we had really came together. the meats had no seasoning and their accompaniments didn't stand out enough to really highlight the flavors. we had to ask for salt and used a lot of it. the salmon came with some really nice spring veggies and a nice lighter sauce, but again, the fish was just so so. the pork had a chimicurri sauce that really sparkled for the first few bites, then seemed to disappear. the white asparagus and scapes were limp and overcooked. the duck w/polenta & cherries had a good sauce, but again, not enough to really flavor the food (i saw a few other plates of duck that looked a little raw). the one entree that was a hit was the moroccan chicken, a sweet fritter type chicken.
overall, i really wish we'd have gone somewhere else, the banana bread pudding and the wine were delicious and our server was knowledgeable and helpful, but it just wasn't worth it.

praise for pago! ignore all of the "dislikes" and give pago a try. i'm not sure why everyone is saying it's so $$$. it's much more affordable than tiburon, fresco, or forage.

anyhow, the restaurant is small and quaint. make sure you ask not to sit by the door or the servers station. otherwise it will be cold or noisy. the menu is also small but fabulous. we had the curry carrot soup ($5), the beet salad w greek yogurt, truffled honey, and cinnamon ($9). we followed with mussels & frites w citrus aoili ($17) and lobster gnocchi in a soft, garlic cream sauce ($27). the mussels were cooked perfectly as was the gnocchi. the desserts of the evening sounded interesting, but we were full.

albeit the corkage fee is high at $15, it may still be worth it to bring your own. they have an excellent wine menu, however, many of the wines are $15 per glass.

there's a reason, this restaurant has won award after award and has received many accolades...

enjoyed pago for lunch. three of us went to pago today and all of us agreed the food was good.
we started with the daily bruschetta that consisted of caramelized green onions on a good bread treated with balsamic, olive oil, and garlic. it was simple but delicious.
for our meals we enjoyed the chicken hash, pork tacos, and tuna salad sandwich. all three were hearty portions and full of flavor.
the wait staff was very courteous and prompt to refill the drinks. they were knowledgeable with the menu as well.
i will definitely return to try other dishes.
