never again!. on january 4, 2012, twelve friends and i decided to celebrate our friend's 36th birthday at the owl bar. the service was horrible and the manager was extremely rude. we all eat out often and have never received such poor service. it made us feel as if our money was not good and reminded us that in 2012 we are still dealing with racism. due to us having a large party, the gratuity was included but was not deserved. when we spoke to the manager about our waitress' service, his response was "she did a great job". this was news to us , as this was the first time we had seen the manager the whole night and the waitress was also nowhere to be found. to add insult to injury, the manger asked us to look around; pointing out that we were the only african american party in the restaurant. he also noted that we were placed in the back of the restaurant so that we could be hidden from the other patrons.
the manager was not willing to compromise about the restaurant only accepted "three credit cards" when it is a large party and the waitress's gratuity is already included. our party was not informed of this "three credit card" rule prior to ordering. the manager's suggestion was that we walk to an atm. i felt this was an inappropriate request. i do not think the manager should have requested us to leave the establishment, walk to an atm machine, and incur bank fees when he could have easily made an exception.
once the bill was paid, minus the gratuity, our party exited the establishment. three members of our party used the valet service. the manager held the cars at the valet so that he could call the police. when the police arrived the manager and waitress explained our party tried to "skip out on our bill without paying." we asked the police officers to play back the call, and the manager said "seven out of twelve black people left without paying". if we were trying to "skip on the bill" we would not have stayed around to talk to the police. the police explained a warrant would be put out for our arrest and we were obligated to pay the gratuity. in the end, we paid the gratuity. our party could have chosen another establishment but we heard excellent reviews about this restaurant. the food was great, but night ended horribly, so to eat our leftovers would only remind of us of the services we were subjected too. the owl bar has lost thirteen customers for life; we will never come again. i will report this incident tobetter business bureau.
