lovely dinner date, great service, but excellent food! strongly recommend the octopus to go with the paccheri pasta, the steak was cooked to perfection as well.

will come back for:
+ pine mushroom gnocchi

came here for a bite of lunch with some work colleagues and was super impressed with the dishes on offer. i had the pine mushroom gnocchi and it was delightful (tasty, velvety and fluffy). service was exceptional. prices above average and certainly approaching fine dining (but worth the price you pay). a great option for a business lunch for sure.

the first good impression starts when you enter in the osteria. the cosy atmosphere, the music and the decor make you feel at ease instantly. the good journey completes the same;
all the dishes are tasting like italy, from the simple porcini croqueta, to the gnocchi... certainly one of the best italian restaurant in melbourne

we rocked up early without a reservation (just before 6pm), sure enough the restaurant was at full capacity shortly after. the space is much more larger than tipo 00 and seats are easier to acquire. it also boasts a wide open kitchen so grabbing seating next to the cooking station or even at the bar wouldn't be entirely bad.

we started off with their negroni oscuri (their house negroni cocktail) which was a killer cocktail, you get a whiff of basil every time you take a sip. i moved onto their ilaria grande later that night which had a strong sweet orange flavour.

they complimented us with some olive bread and butter, would have preferred the entire roll to smother that beautiful soft butter all over, it was really smooth. we got a porcini mushroom croquette each served with some aioli, perfectly crisp and the interior was creamy mushroom, delightful and not overpowering.

the surprise dish was their burrata with pickled quince and bitter leaves. whilst the cheese was mild in flavour it was wonderfully milky and slightly stringy. it was a great combination which highlighted the freshness of the burrata. the kingfish with persimmon and salted radish was another great dish, the persimmon was slightly sweet and did not detract from the quality of the fish.

at this point there was a bit of delay with our next dish, my guess is that they're at full capacity and absolutely swamped in the kitchen (i made the enquiry just to make sure). shortly after our final starter dish came, it was octopus with an n'dujo (speck) and anchovy sauce. this combination gave off a similar flavour profile to a spicy chorizo. the octopus was nicely charred and a bit muscular, not the softest but i enjoy a good chew.

the first of our pasta dishes arrive and it was my favourite dish of the night. it was paccheri pasta (almost like sheets) with a rich sorrel, tomato and (from what i'm told) scampi sauce topped with pieces of crystal bay prawns. not sure if they did actually utilise two types of crustacean in this dish but the sauce was to die for and if no one was watching, i'd lick the plate clean. the pasta on the other hand was perfectly cooked and al dente.

our table was cleared and our waiter actually thought that was it. there was yet another delay with our order and our waiter went to check with the kitchen. ideally you'd want all your main dishes out at the same time (we chose not to get any main meat dishes and stuck with pasta) but we didn't mind as much as the food so far was stellar and it gave us a bit of breathing room in between dishes. the gramigna pasta was good but did not quite live up to the highs of the previous dish. perfectly cooked and packed some bite, paired with duck sausage and artichoke. we did not expect our side of potatoes to come in a singular form which looked like a japanese nasu dengaku (miso glazed eggplant). a great side which was slightly burnt on the surface and sat on top of a creamy fontina cheese sauce.

finishing up we got a trio of desserts (all of them). their deconstructed cheesecake consisted of goats curd (cheesecake) with passion fruit and toffee biscuit. solid dessert. the juniper meringue with white chocolate cream and desert lime is reminiscent of a pavlova, crumbly and sweet. lastly the chocolate semifreddo with citrius cream and olive oil was a weird combination but not the first time i've had chocolate and olive oil together. when done right it can be delicious but i found that the saltiness was too dominant.

despite the food not coming out in sequence it could be forgiven, dish after dish left a positive impression on me. ultimately they rectified the situation before it became an issue. some of the best italian/modern italian food i've had within australia, so much so it has just given me unrealistic expectations for tipo 00.

absolutely delightful to dine here. hands down has to be one of my favourite italian restaurants.

everything from service to food was amazing. cannot fault a thing. the dishes, we’re told are best to be shared. we definitely ended up full to the rim of our stomachs 😋

our favourite dish was on the specials menu, cured duck- just salivating thinking about it now! can’t go wrong with ordering this dish (fingers crossed it stays on the specials menu for a little while 🤞🏽)

as for all the other dishes, all i can say is yum!! looking forward to coming back and trying out more of the entree dishes.

been wanting to go here for ages. caught up with a friend for a mid week lunch. i had the express set menu (octopus entre and osso bucco for $40) my friend had a la carte (fried zucchini flower, cacao gnocchi and goat curd cheese cake for $46) and we both had a coffee each.

service was prompt and polite. flavours were unique, shout out to the the sauce accompanying the octopus, the weirdly delicious choco-nut aroma with the gnocchi and a fall off the bone meat in the osso bucci. only downside is that we shouldve ordered a vegetable side to balance the protein but we were too full also that the cheesecake was to goat cheese tasting, but that should've been expected.

went there on a friday night at 6pm as we (5ppl) couldn’t get a late booking a week before. the service was very good and the food was delicious. we were very impressed with the whiting fish that didn’t taste like fish as it was cooked in butter and beautifully marinated. the fish just melted in your mouth. the porcini croquettes were sooo good! we loved how they offered bread to dip in the sauces too. no wonder this place gets booked out! love that they keep 40% of tables for walk ins!

the wagyu was the stand out for me here! amazingly tender and juicy with a great sauce to accompany it. pair it with a nice glass of red and you are in for a ride!

amazing food! they even manage to take humble pasta to another level. we ordered 1 entree and 2 pasta dishes. octopus with salami paste was delicious! paccheri pasta with crystal bay prawns and the macaroni with wagyu beef cheek are divine. i love the wagyu beef cheek especially. price and portion are not the cheapest but given the ingredients quality, flavour and presentation, they are worth it.

there are not too many places in melbourne which are as good for lunch. the food is varied, exciting and oh so flavoursome. the service is efficient and friendly. it’s not cheap but it’s worth every cent. highly recommend.

an excellent italian/mediterranean restaurant next to tipo 00. i opted for the chef’s selection menu $80, it was so delicious and value for money. i was served about 9-10 dishes and left the restaurant absolutely satisfied and full! will skip dinner tonight.

to try:
honestly everything!! we were lucky enough to come during the first week of their new menu and i am so glad we did.
- fresh warm bread with butter. i could probably live off fresh bread and butter, here it's warm, fluffy with earthy flavours and amazing butter
- porcini mushroom croquettes, don't skip these, there's a reason why you see so many of them leaving the kitchen
- kingfish crudo with avocado, subtle and very well treated
- beef carpaccio, quite different to the ones we have previously tried. they have walnuts which have been pickled, fried and then dried and it adds something truly special to the dish
- pork sausage with braised fennel & polenta crisp, i usually get sick of polenta very quickly but the crisp is a perfect portion done well, the fennel was so sweet and caramelized and pork sausage quite chunky and not over-processed
- paccheri pasta with prawns, an osteria classic
- buffalo mozzarella with plum, we actually got this as a side to our pasta (this > salad, for sure) and it was surprisingly so fresh & light whilst being everything you love about buffalo mozzarella?!
- maccheroni pasta with beef neck and panko crumbs, a true rich indulgent pasta dish, you won't be disappointed

to skip:
- there honestly wasn't a dish that i didn't thoroughly enjoy. although osteria does take online bookings (tipo00, please implement!), it's a great area to put your name down on a waiting list and grab a drink nearby for 30mins or so.

we sat at the bar and were mesmerised watching the chef's work their magic. big thanks to jack from london who made sure we had the best seat in the house to accompany a great food night!
