won't be back.. qualifier: we went on a sunday at an odd time (about 3 pm).
walking in, there wasn't a hostess stand or anyone that appeared to working in the dining area at all. there was a large group meeting there that was getting up as we were sitting down, but they hung around visiting for several minutes, apparently obstructing the one server that was working from seeing that we had arrived. i had to get up and find someone to ask if there were servers working in order to be served (at least ten minutes after arriving).
the others commenting on the slimy floor are spot on. walk carefully; it didn't seem mopped in weeks. there was also trash andfoodstill on the floor under the empty tables near us. if the area guests are in is that filthy, at a typically slow time of the day, then what does the kitchen look like? ew!
but, we wanted some exotic burgers, so we ordered; an order of "frickles" (fried pickles), one elk and one bison burger. outside of the mayo (which is a packet), lettuce, tomato, and pickles that comes on every burger, all condiments are at least $0.50 extra per burger. the various fry options are all a-la-carte, but they do offer half-orders to lower the cost. we ordered half "swaffles" (sweet potato waffle fries) and half regular fries.
when thefoodarrived, a bus-boy in a t-shirt with his long, greasy hair hanging over ourfoodcouldn't tell which burger was which, even though the elk was 1/3 lb. (ordered with cheese) and the bison was 1/2 lb. (without cheese). during the times that they weren't actively serving us, the two bus-boys and the waitress sat in a booth across the dining room enjoying drinks.
the frickles were freshly battered and fried; using a beer-type batter, really tasty, but seemed like jar pickles to me. the elk burger had a good texture, but there wasn't any noticeable seasoning on it at all. the bison had the appearance of a preformed, frozen patty and also lacked any seasoning. both were cooked nearly well done, though they were ordered medium. the tomatoes on our burgers didn't look fresh, so i removed them. neither of the fries were good enough to even finish the half-orders, so that's significant.
i understand that this place is under new management and was much better before. that somewhat explains the bipolar reviews we read before trying it ourselves. then again, maybe they have an "a-staff" that is off on sunday and we ended up with back-ups on the grill and in the dining room. who knows?
