poor service but great food. new shanghai is quintessentially 'authentic' in that it views quality of food more important than service. you'll find that in most restaurants in mainland china; the food speaks for itself, not the service!

i've been going to new shanghai since it opened, and each time, the food is consistently good.dumplingsare their specialty but everything that we've ordered in the past years have been good.

best food joint in queen's street mall, and brilliant value for money. long may this place prosper.

came here just before 5 to grab a quick bite. was lucky to discover their had a happy hour menu. so we ordered their porkdumplingsthat also came with a drink. we ordered a lychee tea drink. unfortunately after we waited also 20 min we discovered they had lost our order. but when the food came we did enjoy our meal but was very disappointed with the service.

horrible service, average food. out of 6 dishes we ordered, only 2 were above average. despite the most amazing prawndumplingsi have ever had, the horrific service and rudeness of every single staff member we dealt with brought this restaurant down in my eyes and i'll never be coming back here again. disappointed.

i’ve been here twice lately – it’s that good. so good, that the friend who came with me the first time, she’s been three times! all within the space of a week. on our first visit we had pork xiao long bao with the pork and chive steameddumplingsand both were incredible. juicy and fresh – you can’t get enough of them! the shepherds purse and pork wontons with chilli, peanut and sesame sauce were different, i had heard through urbanlist to give them a whirl. the chilli and the peanut sauce are a unique combination and one to be tried for yourself!

my boyfriend and i had new shanghai for dinner about three weeks ago. it was a quiet afternoon. we ordered a glass of soy milk that took forever to deliver, not to mention it was disturbing having to watch our soymilk sitting at the bar and we could not get it ourselves while literally sat right next to it.
the crispy chicken with noodles was worth going back for, it had the best sauce to pair. the pan frieddumplingswas nice and crispy.
lastly we had the wontons in chilli oil with peanut and sesame sauce. it used to be sweet, mild and easy to eat. this dish used to be my favourite, but not anymore. it would be a really good dish for people who likes spicy food. the portion was decent and 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶it is extremely spicy🌶🌶🌶🌶. i asked for some more sesame sauce which the waiter tried to charge me for until explained it was so different and way more spicy than what we had in our previous visits.
i know it might sound subjective, but i gotta say it was way way toooo spicy for both of us. our tolerance to spicy food is average, but not that we can't eat any spicy food.
we decided to give it another chance tonight. we ordered it for takeaway. again, it was so spicy that i didn't enjoy it at all. 😵😵😵

food was above average, experience could have been better. hope they can make the spicy wonton less spicy.

the bestdumplingsin brisbane. the shepherd's purse, pot stickers, xiao long bao and sautéed string beans with shrimp and garlic are all must-try. gets really busy on a friday/saturday, but well worth the wait as it's all hot and fresh and so good!

dumplings galore! image courtesy of broadsheet.com.au ever since tom and i returned from hong kong we have become obsessed with dumplings. chinese, japanese..we aren’t choosy and with the recent explosion of dumpling restaurants around brisbane we are clearly not the only ones! so i’ve compiled a list of brisbane’s best joints to grab yourself a gyoza. happy littledumplingswith multiple locations around brisbane, happy littledumplingshave you covered with a range of gourmet and vegetarian dumpling options, vietnamese rolls and steamed buns. i normally hit up the barracks location (why leave your suburb if you don’t have to) and the service is always quick and friendly. the chinese chilli duckdumplingsare to die for and you can follow up your dinner with a scrumptious mango pancake. can you say yummo! brunswick social cocktails, beer and wine? check.dumplingsfor all occasions? yup. a an utterly adorable resident pooch called mr chow? why of course! brunswick social is one of bri

bad service!. frustrated evening there. left very annoyed. the food was good, loved the dumplings. but the waiting staff were quite incompetent. i don't like to be hard on people but i seriously had to ask three times for one of our dishes...we had been waiting for honestly almost an hour!!! i'm seriously not exaggerating. i wasn't even nagging them, and every time i did ask they came back and asked me twice what i had ordered...even though the food was nice i would not go back here because of such a bad experience. if you get your food within reasonable time, then it would be a lovely place. i'm just going to taste gallery in sunnybank for cheaper and better experience. or, if you want to go classy but still affordable, go to bamboo basket in southbank...the shanghai soupdumplingsthere are to die for.

i feel sorry that i visited this place. though yes, since it was around chinese new year, it was very beautifully decorated. check the attached picture. too dark though. :(

the food is probably the worst i tried in brisbane. i really expected good things here. i tried their papaya and fungi dish something this is a traditional sweet of china but i didn't like it. my chinese friend added it doesn't taste like what it does in china. :(

apart from that i tried a variety of their dishes. amongst thosedumplingswere a lot better. everything else was a complete disappointment. :(

greatdumplings(xiao long bao, money bags) but avoid the crispy wanton which didn’t quite deliver on the crunch factor. pretty quick turnover from queue to table to bill.

a rare chance in these wfh days to head into the cbd to run some errands, and took the chance to drop by new shanghai in queens plaza for a feed and to redeem my free birthday dumplings.

we ordered:
* no.201 xiao long bao / steamed porkdumplings(8pc), $10.80
* no.405 zha jiang noodles (with ground pork sauce), $13.60
* no.413 shepherd's purse, shredded pork & rice cake stir fry, $17.80
and for mydumplingsi chose
* no.218 prawndumplings(10pc), $19.50

xlb is pretty much a standing order whenever we eat here - new shanghai do one of the best we've tried in brisbane. i also tend to like ordering one of the shanghai style rice cake dishes as it's rare to find this elsewhere. everything was really nice; the zha jiang noodles was a good sized serve and had heaps of the meaty sauce, and the prawndumplingswent really well with the accompanying dip which had a bit of chilli in it.

service wise wasn't as good an experience. we neglected to bring water with us and my son was feeling thirsty so we asked for water twice from two different staff members, and neither resulted in any water. eventually wifey had finished her meal and went next door to coles to buy some groceries. she came back with a bottle of water and still no water from the restaurant. we also had some issues/confusion about redeeming the birthdaydumplingsvoucher, resulting in me paying more than i expected to. but that was subsequently sorted out after i wrote to the head office with some feedback. so we'll happily visit again when we're next in town.

ps. another good thing is they're on the liven platform, so you can earn 5% of your total spend as liven rewards. if you're not already using liven, get $10 free credits to spend when you sign up with my referral code umqeec!

has always been a big favourite due to the consistent quality of the food. however recent visits have been disappointing.dumplingsare still ok, but the main dishes such as the shanghainese noodles are smaller than usual and haphazardly thrown together. service hasn't always been great, but it seems to have dropped even lower. might as well go to the one at the myer food court.

been to the new shanghai place in sydney a few times so l was super happy to know that there was one in brisbane cbd as well. great food and great variety of dumplings. didn't have any issues making a large reservation for 14 people. i do think the service can be slightly nicer but l didn't care too much because l absolutely loved the food. still so much on the menu to try and l can't wait to go back.

disappointed at the service again. service here has consistently been bordering rude and grumpy. we went during happy hour and it took nearly 20+ to get xiao long bao dumplings. we had to find out what was happening and it seemed like they had lost our ordered but no explanation or apology. just said further 5 mins. we didn't even get our drinks. when we finaly got thedumplingsthey won't great. usually its nice and soupy but even that was lacking. very disappointed. downgraded to 2 from my previous 4 rating.
