mum and daughter date night in the city. no.1 daughter had been wanting to check out this place for a while. we got here around 6ish and the place was already busy. we were very promptly taken to our booked table. i loved that the menu also served as your placemat.
we ordered xiao long bao, pork belly steamed buns and crispy skin chicken withe noodles and a pot of jasmine tea.
the pork belly steamed buns were the highlight of the night. everything was so tasty and can't wait to go again.

visited new shanghai which i would say is very similar to the taiwanese restaurant din tai fung. the menu is very similar as are the flavours. we ordered the drunken chicken cold shanghai noodles which was very tasty - a large portion of chicken, cucumber and noodles. the pork and prawn wonton soup was quite ordinary. the crispy chicken with a garlic and chilli sauce was very tasty however, the sauce did not seem to taste like chilli at all. our favourite dish was the salted egg crispy tofu which was so unique and very tasty. there was a lot of salted egg flavour covering the tofu which was very soft on the inside but very crisp on the outside. this is a dish i would definitely reorder. the xiao long bao was very ordinary - nothing special but still very tasty. i think the wrapping skin is a bit thicker which was good as we had none of the dumplings break so none of the soup on the inside spilled.
the restaurant is quite busy from 5:30-7:30 so bookings are taken then but we had not booked and our table of 4 was seated within 15 minutes on a thursday night.

had made a booking through zomato which was confirmed for friday but on arrival was notified that nothing was noted and that they don't take bookings on fridays. still, the staff accommodated us at a shared table.

ordered the pork dumplings (xiao long bao) and mini wontons. portion sizes for value was ok but is pricey to eat until full if not ordering noodles. no split bill available.

love coming here for authentic dumplings, hot and sour soup and green beans with fried rice. would give 5* but sometimes they forget to come and take your order, especially if you sit outside. don't let that deter you though! also order the taro milkshake. it's the best.

one phrase: best pan fried pork buns, period. these gems have juicy fillings, then crispy fried skin. out of all sheng-jian-bao i've had in china and here this would be the tastiest. otherwise we tried it's shaolong which is on par with din tai fung, radish pastry which is slightly too deep fried for my liking, and wonton in chilli oil which is not as good as din tai fung. but for it's buns alone, this place deserves a 4.5.

hot authentic mix of chinese foods, won ton soup was a nice consistency and volume and seafood hot pot was delicious (although i prefer mine without tofu) staff were abit rushed and we had to share a table with 4 other people even though it wasn’t extremely busy. good if you need a quicker dining out meal but not for a special occasion or special occasion sit down meal.

new shanghai has become one of my regular after uni/work dinner joints. the food is consistently delicious and is generally served quite quickly. i ordered the following:

xiao long bao (8pcs) - very tasty, we always decide to order a serve (forgot to get a picture of these!).

crispy skin chicken served with steamed rice, garlic & chilli sauce - a new dish that we tried, the sauce was delicious and the chicken was well-cooked.

passion fruit tea - this iced tea is a favourite of mine, very sugary but always worth it.

the menu is reasonably priced, the decor is pretty funky and the restaurant itself is conveniently located in queens plaza. definitely a great place to check out for dinner (they also have a happy hour earlier in the afternoon).

the xiao long bao (esp. the crab meat ones) and the wontons in chili oil, peanut etc sauce are amazing!!! we go back for them all the time. pretty much every other dish we have tried here (meatball soup, pancake, fried rice) is decent, too. a solid place for shanghainese cuisine all around.

service can unfortunately be a bit hit and miss - some waiters are good but others can be very slow, and a few even seem like they are trying to ignore as many customers as they can. point of note: they also close very early on sunday (all chairs up on tables and lights off by 8pm - not necessarily a negative, but worth noting). prices are a bit on the higher side for chinese food.

none of that stops us from going back though. love the xlb. :)

really don't understand how the rating is so high!the dumplings were so big!! and the veggie dumplings had a weird flavour.
ordered the stuffed taro, taste wasn't too bad, it was the texture which was soft and off putting.
shame the dumplings weren't nice as they are all hand made to order.

by far some o the best dumplings around. freshly made with those little bursts of juice you get when you bite into each dumpling. there seems to be que everytime we go but it moves very quickly. the one dish that we always get with our dumplings is the crispy golden tofu with salted egg yolk. highly recommended👌.

worst service ever. rushed, rude, unattended.. signature dishes were horrible, oily, heavy, lacking flavor. hot and soyr soup wasn't hot.. suggest you try elsewhere.

i love the dumplings here and i ask for the peanut and chilli sauce on the side because i'm vegetarian and the veggie ones don't come with it but man it's delicious.
also the peach green tea is to die for.

my only problem with this place is that they don't have more vegetarian options.

we came here recently and it was a bit of a let down! there onion pancakes had no taste it hardly had any spring onion. the veggie dumplings where very nice however they didn’t have much fillings in them...
my gd order stir fry beef with a steam bun. she was so shocked when it came out she thought it was going to be a stir fri with veggies ect not make it your self lots of little buns.... this is added on to my original review from about 2 years ago...

am so happy that new shanghai has arrived in brisbane iv been to the one in ashfield in sydney,

iv only had takeaway vegetarian dumplings, they where yummy, it's very busy in the restaurant i love the fact everything is made fresh and from scratch! dumplings are the best!

the crab and pork dumpling xiao long bao was not the nicest i found them very strong tasting and t had crab shell though it :-(
