underwhelmed :-(. victim to over-hype based on others glowing reviews of new orleans lunchbox? i was extremely underwhelmed on my visit on 14 sep. 2012. yes, it is in a bp at the corner of jordan ln. and holmes ave. the best part of the getting my to-go order was the collage age young man working the counter, who was really helpful and nice. he even cut short several phone calls on his cell, to show me their various dishes. i was buying for dh, my mom and myself, so i got the following (b/c crawfish season ended in july-ish and it was unavailabe): smoked pulled pork on bun w/small baked beans for me; smoked sausage on bun (the last one he had!) for mom, plus a praline and "new orleans bread pudding;" and a quart of chicken and sausage jambalaya for dh and son. like others, i think the buns need either a good toasting, or to be put on a flat top to get some texture to them. by the time i drove the less than .25 mile to mom's house, the pulled pork sandwich bun had basically turned into a flat, super soggy, bread-mush. i had to remove the pork and cole slaw from the "bun remains" to eat it. the pork had a good smoky flavor, and the cole slaw was nice + an added pickle slice or two. but, usually the nice thing about a sandwich is you eat it with your hands and you hold the bread -- no can do, in this case. i hope they at least get a small toaster oven. the baked beans were unremarkable, they tasted like canned with some diced sweet onion added in and warmed up . not bad, but not yummy like others in hsv who will incorporate their pulled pork into the beans. mom's smoked sausage looked ok, but had the same bun issue as mine. she did enjoy the praline (home made by owners wife, per young man at the counter) and it was her 1st try at bread pudding, so she couldn't really say much about it. poor dh barely touched the quart of jambalaya stating that his version is s so much better, and frankly, i was not interested in it.
the layout of nol is confusing, as it is a "deli-style" counter at the back of a standard bp. i've walked in there 100 times and never even noticed it. the nol area needed sweeping and the paper towels on each tabletop were spotted on some, with ketchup. i was suprised their health rating was somewhere in the 90s. it's basically a college man dishing up food from a buffet layout of previously cooked food. i wish i loved this place, because i frequent that area. maybe it was just an off day.
