was super excited to get reservations here especially being booked months in advanced. it was quite far from where we live, being in the westside but was it worth the drive? i’m not 100% sure. located on a strip of small little shops, navi is a new restaurant that recently opened showcasing australian native ingredients. as we walked in the atmosphere was really calming and a lot more chilled than i thought it would be. there was an open kitchen where you can dine at the chef’s table and see how the magic is created.
we started off with 3 little appetisers, the macaroon with the trout roe was quite interesting, sweet yet salty. the wallaby egg yolk and preserves flowers was my favourite one out of the bunch. it had this nice smokiness flavour about. i really enjoyed it. last but not least, the smoked eel, apple and native tymes, it had a really nice crunch to it.
moving on to the first dish, the marron, omg favourite dish of the night. the marron was cooked beautifully, i loved the creaminess of the egg yolk with the maroon. all the flavours worked so well together, i wouldn’t mind eating a bowl of that.
next we had the murray cod, i wasn’t the biggest fan of the acidity from the lemon aspen in the dish. it was very overpowering.
now, i’m not the biggest fan of vegetarian dishes, so the next dish didn’t excite me as much however first bite, i guess i could say i spoke to soon. i actually didn’t mind this dish and if my greens were plated like this, i’ll eat them everyday. when the next dish hit the table, it was absolutely plated beautifully.
the hapuka fish was so tender, silky and flaky. i loved the sauce as well!! next dish we had to get a little bit messy with our hands! it was a suckling pig wrap. it was a mediocre dish, the flavours were a bit lacking. i love seeing duck on the menu! so i couldn’t wait for this duck dish to come out. they cooked the duck in two different way. the first way was a piece of of duck and splatter of sauce underneath. the duck skin was crispy and the duck was cooked to perfection. i loved it.
next was my least favourite dish, i’ve never not finished a dish in a fine dining setting so this says a lot. it was a very weird dish. it was a savoury yet sweet dish, what i didn’t like about it was the cheese.
the cheese that were used was so overpowering and was extremely sickening. next we had a palate refresher which i really enjoyed.i loved the milky sorbet, it really complimented those really intense in flavoured strawberry gums. our last dessert was nice however it was very rich in flavour. felt really sickening eating and i could only take a couple of bits and i was already parched. i enjoyed the chocolate surprise underneath!
the petit fours were nothing special. my least favourite was the native jelly fruit. i enjoyed the s’mores.
throughout the night the waitress was pouring us sparkling water which we told them we only wanted still water however the kept refilling our water with sparkling, never really experienced that before??
overall, somedisheswere a hit some were a miss. not the best i’ve been to, would i return??? ummmm maybe not.
