my husband and i had a lovely meal here. the seafood is extremely fresh and the choice is phenomenal. thestaffwere friendly and helpful. the toilets were literally spotless. this may seem unimportant but i think it's a good indicator of the calibre of a restaurant. we will definitely be back.

it's a five; well deserved

two couples, we wandered along rose street and found mussel inn; we're very glad we did. we were sat down with menus in what felt like seconds; drinks then food arrived in quick order, as only it should at a lunchtime.

the décor lends a friendly seafood type feel to the place; the chowder was plain knockout, the salad was nicely dressed, and the wine was most agreeable. thestaffwere attentive, the amenities clean, the bill didn't hurt. your reviewer found he had made it through to final interview for a job application, so mussel inn will forever hold fond memories.

my friend and i were visiting edinburgh and it was our first night here when we decided to try mussel inn upon the recommendation of our host.

the place was packed both indoor and outdoor so thestaffpolitely informed us to wait till there's a free table. it only took about 10 minutes when we were called in for indoor seating. we didn't mind as it was a bit chilly outside. the place is casual with lively ambience and light hues interior.

we started with haggis bonbon which one friend thought i wouldn't like. but i actually found it to be well-seasoned and cooked. the crispy coat of the balls match the soft inside of them.

we added mussel platter as starter and then for our main i had a spiced fish stew and grilled sea bass for my friend. all were good and well flavoured.

i've visited the mussel inn a couple of times now, the mussels are delicious.
to start i had the grilled queenies - grilled queen scallops with black pudding. this was a really nice starter. i went for a kilo of the blue cheese, bacon and cream mussels for my main. the mussels taste great, really fresh and the sauce is so tasty we ordered a second basket of bread to enjoy with it. a kilo of mussels was overkill slightly, along with a starter the half kilo would have been enough.
the house white wine was flavoursome and went nicely with the food.
service was good, staffwere much more attentive on the second visit, service had been slow on my first time there. they have had an interesting new special on the board when i have been in. the place has a nice atmosphere however on both visits i have found the restaurant to be very cold, we sat next to a radiator but it didn't seem to be on!

it is small quite place for mussel lovers. the place is simple and cozy. the service andstaffis friendly from the selection of menu till the payment.

they have combinations of meal which makes it interesting to try variety of dishes. you should definitely try them cooked in different styles, only then you can decide your own liking. if you are trying for the first time; don’t worry! they don’t smell
.
the photo describes the best i had here. they were perfectly cooked, right temperature and off course had all essential flavors.
mussel pots are not be ordered if you are planning a quick lunch.

even though they were turning larger groups away if they didn't have a booking, the host managed to squeeze me in near the bar and i have to say, i was very happy with both my table and the food. even though they were clearly run off their feet, thestaffwere friendly and efficient and my chilli, ginger and lemongrass mussels were the best i've eaten in a long time. in fact it was arguably the best meal i ate during my short stay in edinburgh. there's a reason why this restaurant is do busy. it's because the food is superb!

terrible service, basic food. bad service seems to be a trend in reviews of this restaurant, i visited anyway and although i wasn't disappointed with the food, this was only because fresh fish is always tasty, not because of the restaurant's presentation or culinary expertise. this is yet another example of a restaurant becoming a victim of their own success. the food was tasty as i said, but the wait for a table, attitude of thestaffthat customers are lucky to get to eat there was a complete turn off for me. portions here have become smaller and smaller, getting a table is difficult, yet once there thestaffare inept yet arrogant and the food is really basic. i'd recommend the mussel and steak bar in the grassmarket- far superior! beautiful presentation, consistently friendlystaffmembers and all this remains the same despite its popularity. the mussel inn is on the way out...
