on a trip to the states, my family decided to stop in bellingham for a quick breakfast since we were a bit too early for the outlet to be open. having urbanspoon'd all the breakfast possibilities before leaving, i decided on mount bakery cafe .  dungeness crab benny: poached eggs with cheese on dungeness crab, asparagus and belgian waffle served with roasted potatoes ($14.95) - this was on a board and my dad loves seafood so we ordered this to share. it had beautifully poached eggs and a nice serving of hollandaise sauce but the best part was when you had every single layer with a bite of waffle. amazing. this idea is genius and should be done everywhere!  4.75/5 bowl of fresh fruit ($~3-4): nothing special..expensive for the amount of fruit and cut strangely. there were pineapples, strawberries, bananas and grapes. 2.5/5 overall: the eggsbenedictwere amazing and i would definitely return to try their other breakfast items. they also have a case full of pastries that looked delicious

no frills, just serious about the food!. i really like this restaurant. there's nothing pretentious about it. an easy going small place with full tables of people enjoying food and conversation with friends. lots of locals and university students.

i had the original benny this time. i consider myself somewhat of a benny connoisseur... i always try the eggsbenedictwherever i find it on a menu. i thought that mount baker's eb was beautifully presented and i do like the idea of serving it on a waffle however like i read in a another review i think they would do better to make real hollandaise. i missed the tartness that real hollandaise provides. the dish was very rich and could have used the contrast because they also have a mild tasting swiss emmental cheese on top. but it was good. i could only eat about a fourth of the serving. i would recommend sharing the dish with a dining companion if possible because the portion was so large!

i think when i go again i will try one of their crepes they are known for. and oh yes, i drink decaf and they had the best i think i have had!

this place is worth a try. you are sure to find something or several things on the menu that you will love.

i'd heard good things about this cafe, and for the most part it lived up to its reputation. the eggsbenedictwere great, very creamy and rich, but the potatoes that came with it were overdone. we also had the vanilla bean crepe, which was mind-blowingly delicious. the service was good, but the atmosphere was really loud. i understand that if you don't have a separate kitchen it can't be helped, but crashing silverware and clanging pots and pans do not make for a relaxing atmosphere.

i had heard the waits could be very long here but i was pleasantly surprised when my party of 4 was able to immediately sit out on the patio, no wait, with the option of sitting inside (no wait) on a sunday morning. the food was amazing! i had the classics eggsbenedictand it was wonderful! my husband had the blat and raved about it. said it was even better then the one he had at avenue bread the day before. our friends loved their crepes. we will definitely be coming back. i plan to try everything! be warned though, they run out of their specials quite fast, especially come sunday.

gluten free crepes! oooh lala. went here a couple weeks ago to try the new gluten free buckwheat crepes. usually when i used to eat here i would get the benedict, but since they only way to get that gf is to forgo the waffle, i chose the crepe. after trying to choose just one crepe i picked the smoked turkey and cheese with eggs. of course i always add on for organic eggs. the crepe was huge and stuffed full. i was skeptical of the dark crepe, i'm not a huge fan of buckwheat, but this was thin and light. you can still taste the buckwheat but it's not strong, it's faint. the hempler's turkey was thin and lightly smoked, the cheese was just enough. in fact, it was so filling i had to take about 1/3 of it home with me to eat later.
my husband ordered the hempler's ham benedict, which was a big, tasty plate of food as always. i just tried to avert my eyes while he ate since i love those benedicts. he said all of it was great.

"gluten-free" menu. ha. i like this place (see my old reviews) but since recently crossing over to a gluten free diet i've been limited to a handful of places to eat out. mt.bakery proudly claims they have a gluten free menu, but what it is simply the same menu, with each item that is usually served with a wheat product such as bread, but they remove it. so you are getting less for the same price and they call it gluten free. it's disappointing but i realize there is a resistance to this diet in restaurants. it would be nice if this place and others would take a more proactive approach and offer something to replace the bread when it's subtracted from the dish. or get more creative and make some new dishes so we can still give you our money for your delicious food.

yum. i think this place is usually great. since they expanded the dining area it has been more comfortable and i really like the outdoor seating in the warm season. the baked goods are absolutely delicious and i cannot stop staring at the glass case every time i am in there.
besides this they have coffee set up as self-serve which is convienent when they get busy. the only thing missing is some splenda, i only see the pink stuff here and i don't eat that. but i try not to use sugar either.
the crepes are beautiful and yummy. i like to order the veggiebenedictwhich comes on top of a savory waffle and they put a large portobella mushroom on it with an egg. so good. they have roasted potatoes as well, a soup of the day and a quiche of the day. there are option for every one and the prices are reasonable. you aren't going to get these huge sloppy portions that you get at a greasy spoon, but they give you plenty enough to leave satisfied.
i wish they didn't allow the music on the busy mornings though cause they take up too much space where diners could eat. also whenever i order the shirred eggs (baked) they are never made the way i order them, always overdone or underdone.

this place is worth checking out for breakfast at the very least!

not perfect this time.

our most recent visit to mount bakery produced a less than outstanding meal, at least for one of us. this was quite a surprise to us, since the food here has always been excellent. i ordered the hot turkey sandwich with dutch gouda, mayo, sliced red onion and a cranberry relish. it was really good. my wife had the apple, pear and brie crêpe with a cup of one of the soups of the day, a lentil, spinach and carrot concoction. the soup was good, but the crêpe left a lot to be desired. this was odd because she has had this dish before and liked it a lot. the crêpe itself was dry, and all it contained was apple, pear and brie. no sauce at all-- and it was basically at room temperature except for the fruit, which was cool. she felt that it should have been served warm at the very least, and that some kind of sauce would have greatly improved the dish. no restaurant gets every dish perfect, so i’ll forgive them for this one sub-par dish and keep my ‘i like it’ vote.

one other thing that we had never noticed at our other visits: they don’t serve fried eggs, only scrambled or poached. a staff member explained that they don’t have the proper ventilation to cook fried foods, but i bet there are not many breakfast/brunch places anywhere in the states that don’t serve fried eggs.

and one more thing. they now accept credit cards. good move.

a nice little place.

this is a nice little place for breakfast or brunch. the eggsbenedictwere really good, and the shirred eggs were terrific. we're looking forward to trying some more items on their interesting menu. the one downside was the beverages. my coffee was lukewarm (it's self serve from a carafe and this was probably an accident of timing) and my wife's tea was, for reasons unknown, a bit off. but the food was really good.

oh, and i really don't like places that do not accept credit cards. i cannot imagine the thought process behind such a business decision. do vendors really think that the 3% or so that they have to pay the credit companies doesn't result in an increase in business which will more than offset the expense? breakfast for two was $27 including tip. i often don't carry that much cash.

edit
we dined here again recently. my wife had brunch: crepes filled with pears, apples and brie, accompanied by a tomato soup. she loved it. i had the belgium waffles with a side of bacon. the waffles were good and the bacon was great. the coffee was fine this time. without question, this is one of the best breakfast/brunch places in bellingham.

cozy atmosphere. i've been to mount bakery many times now... and for first-timers, let me warn you to be ready to wait on a weekend because they do get busy! it's always worth it though, the staff are always friendly and the atmosphere is inviting. i usually go for eggsbenedictbut i've had their waffles and crepes too. it's the best place to go when you want to stroll around downtown in the late mornings.

it would have been a goodbenedictif they poached the eggs correctly. the waffle underneath was a nice twist, but poaching an egg should be elementary.
