sunday lunch out in the winelands unexpectedly ended up in the beautiful gardens of morgenhof after our not so food-inspired friends proclaimed that a three course meal at overture was a bit too over the top for them. after boldly suggesting that we go to morgenhof, i would be lying if i said i wasn't slightly nervous and afraid that i may have chosen the wrong place for a family get together. but i can now happily report that i was proven wrong!

firstly, what a beautiful setting! i can see why so many people rave about their picnics - blue mountains in the background, surrounded by lush lawns, blooming flowers (even in the onset of winter) and shady trees. i was quite surprised that they were still choosing to let people sit outside, since end of may in cape town is usually quite cold. luckily it was a warm day and we had no problem with the seating arrangement.

our waiter promptly brought us some water for the table, our drinks and some wine, along with a basket of some of the freshest bread i've ever tasted. warm, fluffy bread rolls and chunky health bread topped with sesame seeds. i was in bread heaven!

for starters, we had the butternut soup, chicken livers and the deep fried cheese with beetroot. the butternut soup was delicious and just the right amount, being thick and creamy, but not too rich. the most beautiful dish was definitely the beetroot, which seemed to go down quite well, as did the chicken livers.

not too long after our starters, our mains of salmon, oxtail pie andlambshoulder arrived. the salmon was served with black rice, which could also be substituted for chips. the fish itself was mediocre, being a bit dry without the accompanying sauce and the skin not quite crispy enough, but satisfactory nonetheless. thelambshoulder got the thumbs up, but the standout dish was definitely the oxtail pie. cooked to perfection, crispy pastry and served with a delicious polenta, it was south african cuisine at its best!

we waited quite a while to be asked if we'd like dessert, and by that time it was too late to order as we had to be on our way. a pity, because their fondant, cheesecake and carrot cake cupcakes would've gone down quite well.

overall, a lovely dining experience at a decent price! very relaxed vibe out on the lawns and absolutely perfect for a family outing. especially for the kids, since there's a jumping castle and plenty of space to run around. i would recommend it for a family lunch or a lazy sunday picnic on a nice day. be warned that service is quite slow, so preferably don't come here if you're in a rush. otherwise, i was pleasantly surprised and will definitely be returning some day for a picnic!

i ate the stuffed mushrooms with spinach and feta and sundried tomato with parmesan crisps, the others ate the oxtail pie and thelambburger (which is always on the menu). thelambburger was very delicious my friend said and it was a huge portion so if you hungry boom... the stuffed mushrooms were very tasty ;) the oxtail pie my friend also enjoyed and the wine per glass was very generous for the value.

went for a lunch and wine tasting. while the service was good, the food needed something. the price for the steak wasn't really justified but thelambburger was tasty. dessert was ok. i wasn't wow'ed. but i'd go back. i must admit for the other wine farms in the area the wines here need so work to be any good.

some smart person once said, "cooking with love provides food for the soul." a week ago today, this is exactly what i experienced. a combination of not only amazing food, but outstanding wine and incredible views, literally brought me so much happiness.

nestled in undoubtedly one of south africa's prettiest areas, it's hard not to fall in love with morgenhof from the moment you arrive. from the lush scenery to the smell of a crackling fire place in the fresh, crisp air, this old wine farm is truly something special.

although it takes only the venue to leave you speechless, it's the food and wine (and the effort put into it) that really stands out.

on arrival we got a glass of mcc and 2 canapés. the mcc was incredible - subtle hints of honey and the perfect amount of fizz, started my night out perfectly and obviously made for some pretty pictures. the canapés included tempura prawn dipped in a homemade tomato chutney and blue cheese stuffed crumbed mushrooms topped with cranberry jam. both were flawless and disappeared in a matter of seconds.

next up was my favourite - a charcuterie board consisting of chicken liver pate, olive bread, brie phyllo parcel, pork terrine, slivers of beef, and some preserved orange skins. morgenhof, your chicken liver pate has changed my life! it is the creamiest, tastiest pate that i have ever had and if i had a pate trophy, you'd be the deserving recipients. everything else was just as amazing, but for me the pate was everything and more. the board was served with a cab sav and a wooded chardonnay, the chardonnay being my cat's meow.

next up was a board of 5 "mini" mains. my 2 standouts were thelambmint burger and thelambcutlet on a bed of mint infused quinoa. clearly i have a love affair withlamband mint, but seriously, they were amazing! each main was paired with a wine, the merlot being my favourite this time round, but they are all outstanding.

you're probably wondering now how i could have fit anything else in my stomach... we all know there is always space for dessert! a trio of red velvet crepe, malta pudding, and cheese cake was placed in front of me and suddenly i was hungry again. i'm a pudding princess and cheese cake makes me weak at the knees. each dessert was tasty in its own right, but that cheese cake! too good!

but what well and truly made this evening, were the people behind it all. the staff of morgenhof have so much love and passion for what they do that it fills a space that many places fail to do. everything about my experience here was food for my soul and i cannot wait to return.

oh morgenhof. you make my heart happy. i attended the morgenhof foodie meetup which absolutely took my breath away. the evening was perfectly set with the crisp winter air, their fireplace was warm and toasty giving off a rustic farm style vibe. perfect for the night that lay ahead.

we were welcomed with a beautiful glass of their 2010 mcc which kicked the night off. the starters of tempura prawn and crumbed mushrooms with blue cheese had us eager for more.

we then went on to our second starters (yes, second round). the starters tasting board consisted of the smoothest and tastiest liver pate, fresh ciabatta bread, olive bread, beef carpaccio, brie cheese parcels and a beautiful chicken and pork roll paired with their phenomenal 2014 chardonnay.

on to the mains... oh the mains. a tasting board of happiness paired with a variety of wines. there were 5 mini tasting of morgenhofs best meals which consisted of everything you could dream of.lambburger, kudu fillet, pasta.... need i say more? the estate merlot took my heart and shattered it into a million pieces. to die for.

desserts. wow... we were spoiled for choice. sticky malva pudding with vanilla and honey comb ice cream, red velvet crepe and the best mini cheese cake you will ever have.

this was the best start to the weekend. with great company and great food, morgenhof is a must to everyone traveling to the cape.

what a beautiful evening friday evening was at morgenhof..
the ambiance is quiet and relaxed. beautiful table set up.
the wines were lovely. the quality and presentation of the food was amazing. my only mark down on the evening was was too muchlambpairing, and i don't eatlambor pork.. so they ended up just giving me a piece of chicken with salad.. i had to ask for red meat to pair with my red wine, as i didn't state i was vegetarian, i love meat, but itlamband pork, so i felt like a bit of an after thought that evening..

this gorgeous winery is one of the oldest in the area, and i literally felt like i'd stepped back into 20th century france when we arrived on friday evening. we were welcomed with a glass of the estate's mcc (so delicious) and wandered around the grounds before the guests arrived. then the food started arriving... and it was incredible. the starter board consisted of homemade olive bread, ciabatta, cold meats and the best chicken liver pate i have ever tasted. i usually hate the stuff, but i cautiously took a nibble and then devoured the rest. i also loved the brie phyllo pastry pocket which i will dream about forever. mains was an elaborate affair of 5 mini portions of the menu's dishes, each paired with a different wine. i died and went to heaven over the 2014 chenin blanc and the estate's merlot, but all the wines were fantastic, as was the food. if i had to choose a favourite, though, the minilambburger and beef fillet were right up there. finally, dessert: a trio of sweet goodies, my number one being the sticky malva with crumbly honeycomb thingies (but oh hot damn the cheesecake and red velvet crepe were also delicious.) it was an amazing dinner, and we were made to feel completely at home by anita, our lovely host. the raging fire kept us warm throughout the night, as did andries the winemaker's stories, and i left feeling like i'd had a weekend away. i'm already planning my next trip to morgenhof, and it involves drinking all their wine and stealing a tub of chicken liver pate on my way out.

i was so delightfully suprised at how awesome morgenhof is! while stellies has an abundance of wine farms and restaurants, morgenhof is a cut above the rest.

i can't even describe how perfect the bread platter is...i will definitely be going back in summer for some wine tasting with this. everything on the platter is home made and to die for. the one roll had a olive filling in it, the phyllo pastry was oozing with brie cheese and the chicken liver pate was the most creamy and delicious that i have ever had.

please please please go for thelambburger...absolutely amazing. you can taste the fresh flavour infused in the meat and the creamy mushroom sauce is a great addition to the burger.

the staff are super friendly and helpful. the head chef knows what she is doing and deserves so much credit for what she is producing.

all their food is perfectly paired with the farms wine, and you won't be disappointed! the chenin blanc was an absolute winner ;)

i'm going to end with 'red velvet pancakes'....yes you heard right, red velvet pancakes! please try this too.

i literally cannot wait to go back!!!!!
