the love affair is over. pondering a good restaurant to celebrate mum's birthday, we decided to go with mizu. it's an establishment we've frequented in the past, and despite being somewhat overpriced for the portion size and un-airconditioned, rustic dining space, it has delivered somedeliciousjapanese cuisine. our experience tonight however was a disaster and our family won't be rushing back.
for starters we ordered the chicken sake salad, nasu dengaku and seafood tempura to share. the chicken sake salad i've ordered before, and it was the standout dish on the night. i have excellent memory when it comes to smell/taste and the salad presented was completely different to the one served on the prior occasion. in part, it was the chicken, which didn't taste fresh. this is worrying as the chicken is steamed in alcohol, which itself blankets pretty much all odours.
i was under the impression that 'nasu dengaku' is grilled miso-basted eggplant. at mizu it's 1 slice of eggplant and 1 slice of zucchini separating three thirds of a piece of tofu. we were also confused by the hoisin-flavoured sauce that was smeared atop it all. the seafood tempura was done very well, but by this stage we were two failed dishes in, and so a bit peeved with the 2 prawns and 4 bits of marinara mix for $28.
the mains were dicey. my sushi platter was unquestionably fresh, my mum's miso sea bass was definitely not. our family's diet is mainly pescetarian. please don't mess up the fish.
then they did something unforgivable. dad ordered the wagyu rib eye steak, medium to medium-well. what was brought to the table was... okay, there's well-done, and then there's so-over-done the steak has resigned its colour and can no longer be recognized as bovine by taste. this was the latter, so for the first time in my father's life, he asked that the dish be taken back to the kitchen. there was (polite) confrontation ("but you ordered medium-well, yes?"...). after a bit of a wait the original steak was returned to our table, every bit as white as before, albeit with an extra wedge of wagyu (well-done this time) artfully laid on top.
fairwell mizu, i used to love you, but couldn't face you again after tonight. stick to sono for fine-dining. you get what you pay for there. otherwise, there's hosokawa in ascot just a couple of suburbs away. i recommend it for fresh, hassle-free, authentic japanese at a reasonable price.
