this place is truly unique! it is not trying to be a patisserie style cafe, thecakesare original and taste like cake should taste- amazing! i was in yesterday and had the best battenburg cake ever! something you very rarely get in a cake shop now. they also had just won various awards at the scottish bakers awards, which i'm sure can't be easy. keep up the amazing work mimi's, it must be so disheartening when people are not getting what you are about.

mimi's is extremely popular in edinburgh but i only managed to visit for the first time last week. my boyfriend and i went in for tea and a cake in the afternoon and i was surprised at how big the cafe is inside; i know that it can be difficult to get a seat at weekends, so i imagined it to be quite small.
there were so many delicious lookingcakesthat we both found it hard to order. eventually we chose to share a mars bar crispy and a slice of banana and nutella cake. both were amazing, the banana and nutella is a fantastic combination and the mars bar crispy was a huge square with bits of mars bar on top.
along with thecakesthe service was a highlight of our time at mimi's. our server was cheerful and bright and very engaging with us. i can't wait to try more of mimi's cakes!

well when i seen the scottish bakers association had awarded mimi's bakehouse second runner up for the best bakery in scotland i had to try it. i wasn't dissapointed. we were surprised to find mimis did not only docakesand offered a menu packed with 'belly busting breakfasts and lavish lunches' we went for fishcakesand french toast with maple syrup. the fishcakeswere fantastic the french toast was devine!! when i decided to add the canadian maple syrup to my french toast it sparked a debate with my wife whether my lunch was a sweet or savoury dish! the cake selection is fantastic a whole array of cake and tray baked which you can watch getting made in the open plan bakery. we decided to share a fresh cream pavlova and to get some cookie dough cupcakes to takeaway. i have to say i have never in my 40 years tasted such an amazing cupcake! caramel sponge with a filled cookie dough centre and a light icing and decorated with cookie crumbs. fantastic. i have to say what really makes this place is the staff you are really made to feel welcome when you arrive and the next time you are greeted like a friend! brilliant i will be back!

there are very few people who live in edinburgh that haven’t heard of mimi’s bakehouse. it’s a bit of an institution around these parts, and for good reason. their belly-bustingcakesand traybakes are absolutely legendary, and if you want to make an instant friend out of me, just treat me to one of their afternoon teas!

minis bakehouse has to be one of my all time favourite spots in edinburgh.
amazing cakes, brilliant decor/atmosphere and just generally a great place for a slice (or 5) of cake and goodies.

*we got there around 2 but had to wait 30minutes on a table... it wasn't a problem as they were super busy and it sunny outside but i do suggest booking even if it is just cake and tea.

*we got 2 slices of victoria sponge, a snickers brownie and a raspberry meringue bar to share among four and it was plenty...

*the snickers brownie was moist, not too chocolatey and with just the right amount of peanut butter flavour - 10/10

*the raspberry meringue slice was okay, a little bit too sweet though but the idea was good - 4/10

*the victoria sponge slice.... omg... is all we had to say!! the classic really was the best with a lovely, crumbly soft sponge with melting in your mouth buttercream and a tasty berry curd layer through the centre. - 12/10

*the service was a little slow to begin with as you have to order thecakesfrom the counter by yourself but i suppose it does work.
we got a few slices of cheesecake to take away.

*our only criticism was once we had finished our cakes, we seen them bring out even more goodies that weren't there before but i suppose that can't be helped, they have to replenish their stock all the time.

amazing place and i will definitely be going back for more cake and to try the menu out myself.

i have been to mimi’s a few times but this was a purposeful visit to try the before noon tea (like afternoon tea but with more breakfast items). i was really looking forward to this as i already know they do a mean french toast for breakfast and theircakesare out of this world.

the food comes on a cake stand and diners are offered a selection of teas. my friends went for tea but as someone who does not drink tea or coffee, i opted for a fruit juice. the cake stand consisted of lots (and i mean lots) of tasty treats. to start, we had small bacon rolls, with a choice of sauces. there was a generous portion of these, enough for two rolls each. the bacon has great flavour and it was an excellent start. we then moved onto their award winning cheese scones with a cream cheese and chive spread. the scones were of the mini variety and again we had two each. they were warm and soft – no doughy texture here. the cheese flavour was delicious and moreish. the spread was nice and light, which was a good thing as we still had plenty of other things to sample. we then moved onto the granola. there was a nice mix of seeds within the granola and the fruit was sweet without being sickly. it provided a nice transition from the savoury elements to the more sweet parts. next we tucked into the cinnamon rolls which had the perfect balance of cinnamon and sweet topping. our penultimate item was a mini pancake stack dusted generously with icing sugar. this seemed a little dry and might have worked better with a compote type filling to moisten the stack rather than the sticky dulce de leche filling. lastly, the mini toffee muffin was a good bite sized treat to finish off with and disappeared in a couple of mouthfuls. it had a lovely depth of toffee flavour with a surprising toffee crunch on top.

overall, the before noon tea was a delight. surprisingly i enjoyed the savoury items more than the sweet but this is certainly this is an experience everyone should spoil themselves with.

do you eat breakfast? i do. every morning. i wake up hungry, so i look forward to breakfast and get very grumpy if i have to miss it. last week, i didn’t miss it, but i had to postpone it. instead of yogurt and cereal in bed, i got up, showered and took the bus to leith. my destination was mimi’s bakehouse where i was to try beforenoon tea, a morning take on afternoon tea.

afternoon tea is a pleasant indulgence. the tower of goodies, a mixture of sandwiches and dainties, is very appealing. there is – to me – something quintessentially british about sandwiches, cake and tea. lashings and lashings of tea. the concept is both simple and luxurious. historically, it’s an afternoon treat, a little something to help fight off hunger before dinner, but the afternoon is not the only time of day you might be hungry or in need of tea.

mimi’s bakehouse in leith is already an institution for lovers of good baking. the cafe is busy, and it’s fun watchingcakesand boxes of goodies go out the door. now, they serve beforenoon tea: bacon rolls, cheese scones and a selection of breakfast-themed treats. i can’t think of a better reason to defer breakfast for an hour or so. we took our seats in plush pink armchairs, smiled at the list cake-lady wall paper, nodded approvingly at the slogan on the staff’s t-shirts it’s all about the cake, and put in our orders for tea and coffee. we didn’t have to wait long before breakfast arrived.

layer one: floury bacon rolls
i hadn’t had a bacon butty before i came to scotland. yes, we eat bacon in sweden, but in my mother’s household, bacon was not a roll or sandwich filling. it was something you had with eggs, or chopped and fried with potatoes and onions. it wasn’t a snack or breakfast food but dinner. maybe that’s why i can be quite fussy about my bacon roll. the roll is very important to me. i don’t like flimsy cotton bread, but want something with a little body to it.

mimi’s rolls were perfect. white but sturdy, with a chewy, floury crust which set off the salty, crispy bacon perfectly. if these are the only bacon rolls i have this year, that’s fine with me because i’d be hard pressed to have better.

c, my breakfast companion, doesn’t eat bacon, but luckily the veggie option – grilled cheese and tomato – was equally delicious.

layer two: cheese scones
the first thing i ever had at mimi’s was a cheese scone. it was very good and very large. (it was so large i ended up calling it lunch.) so i was excited seeing cheese scones on the beforenoon tea menu. i had two mini cheese scones, perfectly risen and golden, with glossy flecks of cheese and dark specks of chive in the crumb. they came with cream cheese and chives, a very nice accompaniment.

a piece of advice: pace yourself. there’s a lot of food to eat. you might want a second pot of tea at this point.

layer three: the sweets
a pot of yogurt, compote and granola was my first step into the dainty side of beforenoon tea. it was gorgeous: crunchy, coconut-y granola over tangy yogurt with a lovely fresh blueberry compote. it also felt virtuous and was a superior version of the breakfast i have every morning.
as i ate my granola, i eyed the rest of the goodies, trying to decide what to have next. i went for the pancake stack. three sweet and firm pancakes, with emphasis on the cake, sandwiched together with dulce de leche. very nice indeed!

another piece of advice: pick up the stack and eat it as it is. deconstructing the layers lead to very sticky fingers.

having cleaned my hands and rested for a little while, i was ready for the mini-muffin du jour. we were there on a raspberry and nutella day. i like nutella. i like raspberries. the two met happily in a moist muffin that was topped with a glistening smear of hazelnut spread. yummy!

i finished beforenoon tea on a cinnamon note. an extremely well-glazed cinnamon swirl disappeared down my gullet with the last of my tea. it was rich, buttery and wonderfully sticky, reminding me of american cinnamon rolls. it was a very nice note to end on.

mimi’s bakehouse is a fantastic place for brunch, lunch and afternoon tea. it has fantastic home baking and lots of choices on all of their menus.

their afternoon tea is splendid and very affordable at about £14.50 per person. you get a selection of sandwiches including egg and chive, gammon and smoked salmon but if you don’t like one of the fillings they will be happy to swap it for you. it also comes with a selection ofcakesand fresh scones. you can also choose which kind of tea you would like to have with you delicious treats.

for brunch my favourite brunch is french toast with banana and salted caramel – this is delicious and very sweet! it’s also very reasonable at about £7.

i love this place and with great prices and friendly staff i’ll definitely be back.

mimi's lives up to everything you expect and more. it is full of tasty cakes, cupcakesand lovely food. each time i visit it's hard not to have a cake there and then take one for home.
the times that we have been we have tried their sandwiches, french toast with bacon and far too many of their cakes. everytime it tasty and we leave feeling like we've had far too much to eat and hyper on the amount of sugar we have just consumed. it's an excellent spot for sunday brunch, although i would advise booking a table as it fills up very quickly!

a very family-friendly cafe offering deliciouscakesand treats; i recommend their pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, their red velvet cake, or just a yummy scone with all the cream and jam you can eat. the staff are great and are very used to adding extra chairs, moving things for buggies and will add a little candle i too of a cupcake for birthday celebrations.

i went to mimi's bakehouse for several tea times and cakes. the place is really cosy and it's a place where you want to go with your friends and family. you will always feel good. the design of the place is really original with sugary colours.
- thecakesi have tried so far were all delicious and i have to say that my favourite is the oreo cake.
- tea times are great and huge! but the good thing is that you don't have to prepare diner afterward and if you have to muchcakesand sandwiches, you can ask to take them home. the regular teatime is always great but i was a little disappointed by the christmas tea time which was more expensive (£17,5 for the christmas/£14,5 for the classic) and some of the items were not up to what they usually do.
- they offer all kind of coffees and teas. i am a tea drinker and i appreciate that they offer tea pig teas.
overall a great experience! don't forget to book your table if you want to try theircakesduring the weekend!
