michael's kitchen & bar

recently under new management, michaels has upped their decor and food quality. their burgers are really good and served with stylish and appetising presentation of chips and salad. delicious! whilst it doesn't pretend to be a venue for fine dining i do feel that the menu is rather boring and dishes offered are typically south african 1980's! burgers, pizzas , fried battered calamari rings and fried hake and chips could surely be added to with some interesting dishes, or dumped! in fact apart from their delicious burgers, the other items i've tried have also been a little disappointing. service is good and the owner is always around to make sure things go smoothly. if they could just be a bit more innovative with the menu i would up my rating of 3.5....

later...went for a most disappointing breakfast. my soft poached eggs were mangled, bacon was 80% fat, grilled tomato was flash grilled for 5 secs. mushrooms were very tasty. but the worst was one slice of government issue brown toast. ..completely tasteless. i do think that for r75 excluding coffee, they could at least serve a couple of slices of decent bread. this is an above average price for a way below average standard of breakfast.
at least the coffee was good.
i'm lowing my previous rating from 3.5 to 2.5 for the poor breakfast.

this must be a perfect place to go in winter. if you're always cold like me, you can even sit on the couches by the fire and have your dinner. the pizza was delicious followed by cheesecake that all hit the spot. the ambiance is ideal to sip on a glass of wine and enjoy your evening.

we had a very pleasant experience at michael's. the decor was very well done. our drinks took a long time to come, but the service was good and the cream that my friend ordered with coffeee was very fresh. i don't eat bacon, so i was dissapointed when the waitress told me that the salmon was out of stock. i ordered the design-your-own-breakfast and had an omlette with cheese, mushroom and avo. it was a very big portion and good value for money. the cheese was not melted, so i sent it back and i got my food back very quickly with a clean set of cutlery, so i was impressed. our waitress was generally very friendly and efficient.

tried this restaurant out for breakfast one saturday morning and boy was it buzzing. it fills up quite quickly but the service is still really good! the food was quite nice, i feel like breakfast alone is not very reflective of a restaurant's food as it is a simple meal. but all-in-all i loved the cozy atmosphere with the buzz of tables nearby. would love to try their other meals!

i went on a solo trip to get some dinner. i'm always a big fan of outdoor seating so i enjoyed sitting outside overlooking the road. i ordered the pork loin ribs with fries. the food on the plate looked amazing but the ribs were lacking flavour, they were heavily charred so they tasted more burnt than anything so i really didn't enjoy that part of my meal, i'll go give them another chance soon.

i've had lots of take-away coffees and juoces from.michaels, today i had mu first meal. service has always been friendly and attentive and i love the feel of the restaurant. the chicken strips i ordered were tasty, but not my style. i would have preferred more chicken amd fewer crumbs. the side sald had a tasty dressing. look forward to trying out more of the menu, hopefullt as a sit-down diner

michaels is the best place ever! the food and people are incredible, a great place to stop off for breakfast on a saturday morning or to grab a bite in the evening. this is a must try!

i just have to say that your staff are amazing. the extra things i saw them do while serving us was really impressive. they take there job really serious and made for such a pleasant experience. thank you

had a lovely lunch at michaels today. conveniently situated close to rondebosch common, so i could have a good guiltless lunch after a 5km walk. i opted for the calamari and chorizo salad, whixh was lovely. my friend had the focaccia, which i must say, looked enviously good, but so filled with carbs, i couldn't bring myself to beg for a slice. especially after my walk. we also had tge the house red wine, which was one of the mist delicious merlots ive had in a wjile, and a nixe full glass too. to end off we had creme brulet and chocolate brownie which was pretty average, but i really enjoyed the lunch and plan on doing this more often for sure.

visited michael's today (friday, 2 march 2018) at 13.30. service from natasha (name on bill) was very poor.

took a while for her to take our orders. heavy handed when placing drinks on the table. did not remove empty glasses, did not attend to us at all but was all smiles and jokes when she brought the bill (although it was not requested of yet).

hake and chips - average tasting at r85, chips were over salted.

margherita pizza was average tasting at r70.

the service completely put us off and we were left feeling extremely dissatisfied. one of the first times my partner and i have not tipped a server. but we feel no guilt due to the fact that the service was so poor. will not be returning

awesome venue. food is great and the service is impeccable. staff are very friendly. the minute you enter the door you are attended to. the vibe is great as it's fairly busy in the week during the lunch period.

my friends and i are michael’s regulars on a sunday morning. very nice spot, with decent service and a very nice menu. the fries are always delicious and they have a great selection of warm beverages and deserts/confectioneries for coffee dates.

lovely ambiance but not the best service. the food came quick but took ages to get the bill when i needed to rush off. i had a lovely hot chocolate but a disappointing beef burger. overly salted fries. overall very eh. sad because i've been here before and had an amazing time, amazing pizza but today was just eh.

super average. so much potential to be a hot spot for the hoards of students in the surrounding area.

food is uninspired with an average menu and prices aimed at upper class southern suburban families.

coffee is average and disappointing, service is hit and miss, and the interior is dark and drab.

place needs to be brighter, lighter with a focus on better breakfasts, better artisan coffee and affordable prices.

finally tried this place and i liked it! i don't mind coming here for drinks and dates. the alfredo is superb suggest anyone to try it out. the location it's also great for it's not that busy unless it's a school day cause the high schoolers do go there too. i'd like to try it at night that's for sure.
