the flagship mastro's. if you are a steakhouse lover, then welcome to your mecca.mastro'sis hands down the best steakhouse chain we or our friends have ever experienced and the beverly hills location is the most interesting of allmastro'sofferings. we've been visiting the beverly location for years and in terms of people watching and interest of decor, this location is tops. decor is tasteful, modern, and carries just the right amount of lively ambient noise. staff is polished and professional on all occcasions. of course then there is the food. nearly every entree is amazing from the opening breadbasket and appetizers to the delicious deserts (we were fortunate to sample them all one night when a manager offered our group an entire desert tray - nice to be a regular!). steaks are of course amazing, though we recommend trying the double-pork chop which is often overlooked and really great. don't over-order as the portions are huge! even the drinks are noteworthy with martini's being offered complete with the still half-full shaker they are shaken and poured from table side. highly recommended.mastro's- don't change a thing!!

not so special occasion. i went tomastro'swith my family for my daughters 20th bday celebration. we made a reservation, and yet when we arrived (early), we were told that they were running about 20 min behind. we had to wait in the packed entry area, with a crowd of other people who also had reservations that were not honored. there was no place to sit, there was not way to enjoy a cocktail, standing, constantly jostled by the crowd in the chilly entry area. it was really noisy, and uncomfortable. it took over an hour to be seated. once seated, our waiter brought me the wrong drink, claiming he mis-heard me. probably because it was really loud at the table also.

the food was very good, with the exception of the sweet potato fries, which tastes oily.

the service was also good until the entrees were cleared. we then waited over a half an hour more for the "special" bday dessert, which was good, but by this time our heads were throbbing from enduring over three hours of this loud restaurant.

we spent almost $500 for the 4 of us, in spite of the fact that they comped us one drink and the dessert! this would be ok if everything was perfect, but it was far from good. we all agreed that we would have preferred that they simply said no to the res, rather than overbooking so badly that a crowd of people have no table and no place to relax.

very poor management.

not even close/might consider alternatives. after several suggestions from friends, i booked a table atmastro'ssteakhouse in beverly hills. someone must have been missing the in the kitchen and certainly they were missing in the meat cutting room.
here is the lowdown:
nice atmosphere - very clubby, yet better designed that most morton's or ruth chris. however, needs a dress code - guests in ratty jeans, trainers and t-shirts. some wearing ballcaps. not acceptable. in addition, with the every nice lounge and other places for phone use - way too many phones and attendant light and noise in a dimly lit room. management should have a no phone policy and enforce it.
excellent welcome - wonderful host and front of the house crew. patient, kind and accommodating. however, the seating policy should be altered to allow seating when most of the party has arrived. we were two, i parked just a few spots up from the front door and was in the restaurant within minutes. my partner was not allowed to sit down at the table until i arrived 2 minutes later.
excellent and attentive service- good team of folks to serve each table. ran like clockwork, yet seemed personalized and friendly. paid attention while ordering, and made solid and smart suggestions without being overbearing. professional and hard working.
food: because it is a steahouse, all the steaks should be superstars. ordered the $58 (24 oz) porterhouse - the king of steaks. requested medium rare and no seasoning. came out with no seasoning and cooked a bit on the medium side of medium rare -- however, since the steak comes on a high temp heated plate -- the steak continues to cook (and not rest) and adds at least one level of tempeture in a matter of a few minutes. if you enjoy the steak without rushing, the medium rare quickly becomes medium plus. this issue needs attention right away - or suggestions from the wait staff to request cooler tempeturs while ordering to compensate. porterhouse was thin and dry. very, very disappointing. my partner enjoyed a veggie plate, excellent steamed greens and onion rings. good quality, good size portions and quality preparation.
ordered both mastro salad (iceberg lettuce, shrimp, tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles, etc) and chop (iceberg, cabbage, tomatoes, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts). mastro was excellent, very large (could be shared) good ingredients and generous amount of shrimp. the chop was a disappointment with only two kalamtas and one piece of artichoke. (the attentive staff asked to fix the problem, we declined because we were not going to eat more of the salad and he removed it from the bill - we did not request removal).
bread serving: good variety of pretzel roll, sourdough, cheese toast, french roll and a couple of others. very fresh and good quality. only salted butter -- seems that the kitchen would have unsalted.
soup: french onion was good but not great. broth was boring, cheese and onion components were good.

overall an average meal at very high prices.

was it an off night?. i was hoping for a great steak experience, but something went wrong. maybe should have ordered the rib eye chop?

decor - dark yet very comfortable, like a steakhouse should be. sat downstairs.
service - excellent! they even have an iphone charging station at the hostess desk.
onion soup - satisfactory
porterhouse, 24 oz. - medium rare. filet-side, succulent. sirloin-side lacked taste.
gorgonzola mac & cheese - satisfactory
butter cake a la mode - odd flavor, like an ingredient was missing.

i'll have to givemastro'sanother chance. i've heard nothing but great things from people. either it's an off night, or i need to heavily discount other people's opinions.

a good steakhouse choice. i've eaten here three times. on two occasions the steak was good, and the other, outstanding. (i recommend the new york strip with bearnaise.) the dark wood/overstuffed furnishings atmosphere in both levels is very nice, although the tables can be a bit cramped. the service has been good-to-great during every visit.

as you might guess with any upscale establishment in beverly hills, mastro'sis quite pricey. the wine markup is easily in the area of 5x over retail, depending on the label. the seafood tower appetizer, while great, can set you back some *serious* coin.

not the best steak i've had, but a good choice if you're in town.
