it's all about the meat. that's what our lady server said as she wheeled out a table of insanely large viands in front of me and my son. thirty oz filet mignon; 40 oz ribeye; 5 lbs bludgeon of beef; a live 5 lb. lobster who stared at me with a forlorn look. while i was up for a steak, i wasn't up for a $200 meal either.
after some consideration, i asked about having prime rib, which wasn't one of the selections on themeatcart. they did have a 48 ounce honker which they agreed to cut in half for me and junior. at $47, it is a great value (the lobster went for $100). cooked medium rare, the prime rib was great in spots (well seasoned where themeathad a crust), but kind of lacking any distinctive flavor in the center of the cut. overall, it was good, but it wasn't the best prime rib i ever had. i am typically a clean the plate guy, but the sheer mass was too much for me to eat in one sitting.
sides are ordered a la carte. the sauted mushrooms were outstanding - it might have out-did the prime rib. the mac and cheese was not that good.
we escaped with a $92 pre-tip bill. we took about 16 ounces home and junior had it for breakfast the next day.
i don't know what to say about manny's. it's an experience. but i also think it's a once a year kind of place. it's a place i would expect to see don draper wining and dining some clients before closing the big deal -- if don draper lived in minneapolis.
