amazing food!!

we made an impulse decision and a last minute booking on friday night for dinner and we were so pleased that we did!

we finally tried the crab curry at mamak tandoori house and it was terrific - the flavours were sensational! it was incredibly messy to eat - but fun! the fried okra was delicious too!

outstanding!!  sensational!!
as lovers of spicy indian and malaysian food, we came here expecting to be disappointed. we ordered a mysore masala dosa (basically a traditional masala dosa smeared with a extra chilli tomato paste) and a lamb roti murtabak which came with a bowl of fragrant lamb & chicken coconut curry. the food was sensational!! the flavours were authentic and everything tasted like it had been freshly made from scratch (instead of the usual commercial curry paste/sauces). the dosa and the murtabak was asgoodas or probably even better than anything we've eaten in india or malaysia!! we'll definitely be back to try some things!

be warned though - with food this good, this small restaurant is very popular. you really need to make a booking and be prepared to wait!!

we came here on a saturday for lunch and were blown away by how great the food was! my husband had a roti canai (the portion was sizeable) and i had a masala dosa and it was delicious! the best dosa i’ve had for ages! it was massive too which i couldn’t finish and my husband happily helped. the dosa came with three yummy sauces - would highly recommend the dosa!! the roti wasgoodtoo!

it came highly recommended, and fully lived up to expectations. mamak tandoori house in camp hill delivers the goods when it comes to indian malaysian cuisine. the only people i wouldn't recommend it to are those who can't take heat/spice.

we had the opportunity to visit with some malaysian friends and ordered:
* fish malabar, $20 - mackerel fish food cooked in south india style with coconut milk
* ayam masak merah, $17.50 - chicken cooked with tomato, onion, fresh chilli, lemongrass sauce with almond and coconut cream
* hyderabadi biryani, $18.50 - tender lamb marinated overnight with biryani spices and cooked with basmati rice in a clay pot hyderabadi style
* fried okra, $15.95 - stir-fry okra with turmeric, onion and red chilli
* cheese & garlic naans, $5
* cheese & spinach naan, $5
* plain naan, $3.50
* basmati rice, $3

total bill $93.45 for 4 adults and 1 child, which was pretty decent given we ended up having a fair bit of food and all of it was quite moreish. we picked dishes based on recommendations from people in the malaysians in brisbane fb group, so i think we were pretty well guaranteed of agoodtime. i would totally order any of these dishes again, but particularly enjoyed the curries and the fried okra. i grew up eating okra cooked a certain way, and have never had it this way. it was eye-openingly good!

will definitely have to return again, hopefully next time on a weekend so i can avail myself of their roti canai and murtabak, which were also highly recommended items.

be aware that mamak's spicy dishes only come in medium or hot, so if you're someone who can't take heat like my son, you might end up mostly only eating naan and rice. so i'll have to find some other company next time to explore more of their range.

regardless its lack of vibrant atmosphere and fancy decor, our dining experience at mamak tandoori house was wicked. the service wasn’t top butgoodenough.

eggplant pakoda, that we rarely found on a menu in indian restaurants, were served nice and hot with eggplant soft inside and crisp batter. the accompanied yoghurt based mint and coriander sauce was divine.

goat pepper masala blew us away. it was a perfectly tender, juicy and flavourful curry.

the chicken sambal had a complex flavour that was all at once earthy, spicy and hot. pretty sure mamak made its own sambal paste that was the tastiest one we had every had.

mamak had definitely beaten curry ville in morningside where it used to our best indian.

the best indian/malaysian i've eaten by far- though i've never been to either country really. i'm prettygoodwith spice but don't try and be a hero here, it's pretty brutal. every dish is a taste explosion and so creamy and well...a little fatty, but that's why its good!! the vego dishes are particularly good. i recommend ordering a more mild dish to compliment the really spicey ones. don't change...ever. even the daggy deor!

maybe we struck an off night. we were recommended this restaurant, but will not return. the entrees were cold, the naan bread was appalling (soggy with jarred yellow garlic scraped across it) and it was not delivered until the meal was over. the sauces were watery and lacked flavour and we were left with an unpleasant taste. the interior of the restaurant is not at all welcoming - feels like sitting in an industrial workman's lunchroom.. there are plenty ofgoodethnic restaurants around and this failed to meet our standards.

our go to place forgoodmalaysian indian food. absolutely love their fish curries and paneer. can get a little busy at times during dinner, but definitely worth the wait.

not to mention they do free delivery for orders more than $40

this place needs a "love" button, because "like" doesn't cover it. i've eaten a lot of indian in my time, and this is verygoodindeed. their specialty is the dosa lunch, which is available only on the weekends between 12-2pm. there are only a couple of other places in brisbane that serve this giant crispy crepe with indian dipping sauces, but after you've tried it once, you'll be hooked! my husband is avowedly anti-indian-restaurant in his food preferences, but even he makes an exception for mamak! the service is genuine and attentive, but be aware that the meals can take some time to prepare.
