prahran market
home of arguably the best cheese toasties in melbourne, maker andmongeris a gourmet cheese shop at the prahran market. with a beautiful range of cheeses that you can purchase to take home, it's the gourmet toasties that have people queueing from the early hours.

the serves are enormous, with beautiful thick toasted bread and the gooiest cheese fillings. there are a select range of fillings, but the quality of the cheese and other ingredients really makes these toasted sandwiches outstanding. we didn't have to wait too long, and the staff were bubbly and friendly.

we had a truffled mushroom toastie and it was amazing. the combination of flavours worked so well, and the oozing cheese was just so addictive. i could feel my arteries hardening as i ate this sandwich, but sometimes it really is worth it to have something so indulgent. when it comes to cheese toasties, maker andmongerreally are masters of this simple craft.

it’s true what they say about the simple things in life often being the best. the humble cheese toasties at maker &mongerin prahran market are definitely a wonderful testament to the phrase.

the one i tried on the day was their spring special, which was filled with oven roasted mushrooms, cave ripened taleggio and fresh thyme. just a beautiful, classic combination of flavours done oh so well, with the toast golden and crispy. being housed in prahran market means they have access to super fresh, amazing quality ingredients, such as the mushrooms used which come from damien pike, the resident mushroom man at the market.

the service is so friendly. i loved the toastie so much that i wanted to try to recreate it at home, so i had a lovely conversation with one of the staff who told me which cheeses and mushrooms they used, and just gave general advice on the perfect toastie.

in terms of price, $15 might seem steep for a cheese toastie. but honestly, the taleggio they use isn’t cheap (i bought some, so i know), so you really are paying for what you get.

definitely do not miss out on trying this place if you’re ever at the prahran market. if you love cheese, i can guarantee you won’t be disappointed. personally, i can’t wait to go back to try out their flaming reuben!

the new maker &mongerbrick and mortar is an amazing next step for this talented team. the cheeses are very consciously curated and each so delicious. and those famous toasties are always a winning option. i can't wait til the shop receives their liquor licence so i can stop by for wine and cheese flights. hands down my favourite cheese destination in melbourne.

this was the first time i have bought a toastie from maker &mongerbut it certainly won’t be the last.

i ordered the pimento toastie on friday and it literally was an explosion of amazing taste in my mouth with the perfect consistency of cheese, salt and peppery goodness. i have never tasted a toastie that delicious.

i can’t wait to return and have another one, it was amazing.

we don't visit prahran market often being northern suburbs residents but we found ourselves on a day out southside on a sunny saturday. i have seen too many videos and photos of the oozy, cheesy goodness chez maker andmongerthat we couldn't leave without sampling. . having indulged in a pretty satisfying lunch, we could only make room to share a toastie and we went for the pimento which is a blend of cheeses and some cayenne pepper and cornichons.

when you go to the prahran market, maker andmongershould be on the list of things to eat. yummmmmy, this was cheese galore. the flaming reuben ($13) was nice and salty. the swiss raclette ($15) was so oozy over the potatoes and fresh shiitake mushrooms. the pickle was a nice respite from the heaviness of the dish.  best to share this dish!

raclette and grilled cheese sandwiches! how can you go wrong?
it is crazy to think that you could spend $10 on a grilled cheese sandwich and still walk away with a massive smile on your face yet somehow you do.
despite being such a simple dish, maker andmongermake it interesting and delicious.
it is so hard to choose which sandwich is better though because they all have their own unique elements.
between my partner and i we tried the pimento sandwich, fondue sandwich and the raclette as well a hot mulled apple juice. this cost us $40 but was worth every cent. it was the perfect lunch for a cold, wet day.
there are so many other delicious looking options and we will be back to try the rest!

i don't really like cheese. i don't understand the whole cheese platter thing. however....melted cheese is a whole mother thing! and the best melted cheese is a cheese toasty. and in my opinion, the best cheese toasty in melbourne is the fondue toasty at maker andmongerwith melty gruyere, coate, shallots, wine and garlic. i'm pretty sure there's butter on the bread and it's make for a glorious golden caramelised crunch that gives way to cheesy stretchy heaven. it's full on and i've never finished a whole one but every mouth full is divine! i'm sure the other toastys are delicious too, but i can't try another one this ones available. hmmm, maybe go with a friend and split two different ones!!!!

maker &mongerhad a big queue during the cheese festival last saturday. and it was for a good reason! on advice of the staff we took the blue cheese raclette and the spaghetti. i would have wanted to try everything they have though!! the blue cheese raclette came with raw ham and strawberries, what a delicious combo! the spaghetti was very tasty as well. it is quite expensive ($26 for those two dishes, which are not very big). would definitely have given a 4 if it would have been a little more affordable!

maker &mongeris a sandwich and pasta cart set up in prahran market with cheese as the star of the dish. they use authentic parmigiano-reggiano which is a massive plus for me. you can't beat the taste of the real thing.

i've had the pimento, fondue and the reuben. the pimento is bold and flavorful but can be inconsistent. the fondue is amazing and always good! their combination of cheese is irresistible. the reuben is ok. one of the better ones in melbourne but not great.

nevertheless, their grilled sandwiches are epic and a must try!!!!!
