beautifulbeefrendang but the other dishes we tried were very ordinary - especially the nasi goreng. wait staff varied from really helpful to officious. nice enough meal but in melbourne that is not quite enough fir me to return.

great decor and fantastic service, although we should have asked for meals to be staggered because everything came at once! beefrendang was dry and too much pepper? also pork belly skewers were underwhelming. otherwise, soft shell crab was delicious and so were the chicken wings and barramundi salad! reasonably priced!good wine list - the standard surcharge applies but they have picked good quality ones so don’t feel like you are ripped off.

throwback to pre-covid19 when dining out was still a norm - 📍makan, one of my all time favourite asian fusion restaurants in the cbd. asian fusion can typically be hit or miss in my humble opinion, but this place never disappoints!

dishes:🍲🍟🍔
nasi goreng (fried rice) 🍛| wok tossed eggplants 🍆 rendang braisedbeefbrisket 🥘| grilledbeefribs 🥩| lamb shank 🍖

value:💰💲
nasi goreng is always a must order whenever i visit makan 😍 my fav mains would be rendang braisedbeefbrisket (it’s soo tender and bursting with flavours - portion is slightly small though) & lamb shank (generous portion). eggplants are really good too and would be a good option for vegetarians. the grilledbeefribs were slightly dry, but still a pleasant dish.
price is pretty reasonable for the quality of dishes, also a good place for big groups (so you could order lotsa dishes and try them all out - that’s what i usually do)😆🙊
desserts wise, unfortunately it was a miss for me - personally did not enjoy the three that i’ve tried (do not recall the exact names too as i think it was a seasonal menu).

will i go back and overall score: ❌⭕️💯
yes - 9/10 but i would probably give the desserts a miss next time

happy belated valentines day! we were so excited to book at @makaninmelbourne , one of the hottest new restaurant openings in melbourne in the last year!! from a raw kingfish with avocado mouse and spicy coriander sauce, to fried chicken ribs with the tastiest chilli sweet soy glaze (it was seriously amazing), grilledbeefrib an incredible sambal sauce and the salmon grilled in a banana leaf, with jimbaran sauce, just to name some of the dishes we sampled. accompanied by some incredible 70s/80s funk music, it ended up being an incredible night! we will definitely be back to try their famous balinese pork hock, which was named one of the best dishes of 2019 by delicious!

📍makan, melbourne
hidden on the ground floor of the corporate building on collins street! heard a lot about makan for serving auethentic indonesian food so i was excited to finally visit. chic interior design with dimmed lighting - it was a perfect first date spot :) we decided to grab soft-shell crab baos (2pcs, $18), stuffed calamari (mp ~ $30), bbq sticky ribs ($32), and black sticky rice ($14). soft-shell crab bao was crispy with a light spicy kick from padang tomato sauce. a perfect starter! bbq sticky ribs were glazed with sweet soy and came out with sambal sauce. what can honestly go wrong with bbq ribs? finger lickin' good - absolutely juicy and easily fall right off the bones. went wonderfully together with jasmine rice we ordered. my personal favourite! next, we moved on to stuffed calamari - i think stuffed with fish paste. it was served on top of delicious bumbu rujak sauce which had fragrant aromatic spices to add more flavours :) we finished the night with black sticky rice with salted coconut cream, sasame nougatine, and coconut & kaffir lime ice cream. not my personal favourite as i am not used to having rice as dessert but it was definitely nice and refreshing. too bad i was too full by then.
overall, it was a beautifully designed restaurant with amazing food. i feel like i missed some of the more popular options so i'd like to visit again in the near future to try them next time (esp.beefrendang)

walked into makan from a blustery cold autumn day to a warm and delicious indonesian surprise.

we had the satay, sambal fish, beefrendang, and mi goreng, which were all delicious! :’) topped it off with the glutinous rice dessert and was perfection!

love it, can’t wait to come back!

a lovely hidden restaurant which can be entered from an office building on collins street. we had the banquet and were very satisfied even though it only included entrees and mains. the serving size of the dishes was generous and the flavours were distinctly indonesian to me, having travelled to indonesia many times in the past. the kingfish sashimi, swordfish satay, grilled prawns, grilled pork ribs andbeefrendang were definitely stand out dishes and were all perfectly spiced and delicious. my only suggestion would be to have more sambal and vegetables to accompany the mains. overall, this place is truely a gem if you have a craving for indonesian food in a beautiful classy restaurant in melbourne cbd.

we had lunch here last week with 2 kids under 2, and the staff were super lovely and accommodating. between the 5 adults we ordered the chicken wings, crispy duck, oxtail stew, beefribs and they were all really delicious. the highlight for me personally was thebeefribs. for dessert we shared the cendol pannacota and the special of the day, pineapple cookie (tasted like pineapple tart that you get for lunar new year).

i came here for dinner with my friends. we selected the tasting menu for $55pp. it came with 5 small and 3 larger dishes. all the meals came in sharable big plates. some meals can be easily distributed with the number of people, but some are trickier to divide it ourselves (e.g. the white fish gohu).

these are the meals that we had:

1. white fish gohu, spicy coriander dressing, cucumber, avocado mousse, rice crackers – 17 gf:
like a ceviche; fish was soft and tender; the taste was alright. my only disatisfaction is that it came with only a slice of small fish and it was quite tricky to divide it among ourselves. it would have been better if it had been pre-divided into the same number of people.

2. fried chicken ribs, chilli & sweet soy glaze – 15:
very flavourful, but i felt that the chicken contains more skin than meat.

3. fish sate lilit, lemongrass, galangal, coriander, pickled daikon – 15 (3pcs) gf df:
good, but imo it would have been better if it came with sambal on the side.

4. grilled jumbo king prawns, spicy tomato relish, prawn salt – 18 (2pcs) df:
love the flavour, although it required some effort to separate the prawn meat from the shell.

5. grilled corn cobs, kaffir lime, chilli salt – 12 (3pcs) gf df vg:
good old grilled corn cobs, hard to get wrong here.

6. kangkung, shrimp paste sambal, roasted peanuts – 16 gf df:
lacking flavour; my least favourite out of all.

7.beefbrisket rendang, potatoes – 26 gf df:
it didn't taste like an authentic rendang. for some reason it tasted cheesy, and not in a good way. this is not my favourite and i feel they can do better than this.

8. bbq sticky ribs, sweet soy glaze, sambal (beef – 29 pork – 30) df:
it tasted good, the meat separated very easily from the bone; although i think the sambal was more of sweet than spicy.

9. jasmine rice:
they gave us very generous portion of rice and we could still ask for more rice if we wanted to. they gave us portion for 2 people but it was more than enough for 4 of us.

generally the food was good, although i'm quite disappointed with the taste of the kangkung and rendang. the variety of the tasting menu and the portion are great. we didn't manage to finish all of them, but they allowed you to bring the leftovers home. their service is awesome.

restaurant has a slick modern design but lacks a bit of atmosphere. staff were super friendly and attentive. menu was interesting. between two we shared the king prawns, the crepe roll, thebeefshort rib and the stir fried greens with shrimp paste. i was a bit disappointed with the prawns and the short rib. the prawns were quite difficult to eat and didn’t have much meat on them. and the short rib probably needed to be slow cooked a little bit longer in order to render the fact and make the meat really tender. i absolutely adored the stir fried greens though. so jam packed with flavour.

makan was a new hyped indonesian restaurant, with tasia & gracia, who won my kitchen rules 2016. the price was a bit pricy, so i had high expectation for this restaurant. the place had modern decor and suitable for large groups.they offer a great selection of indonesian dishes.

fried chicken ribs, chilli & sweet soy glaze
price: $15
taste: 🌝🌝🌝
the chicken was quite flavourful and crispy. however, the sweet soy glaze was too sweet for my liking. it tasted like indonesian sweet soy sauce. it needed more depth and variety of flavour. liked the crispiness, though.

balinese pork shank, sambal matah
price: $30
taste: 🌝🌝
was excited about this dish, since i loved sambal matah. the pork was way too salty. the sambal matah wasn’t so spicy. my least favourite dish.

beef brisket rendang & potatoes
price: $26
taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜
thebeefwas tender, and the sauce was flavourful. it was definitely a next-level rendang dish. if you want an indonesian taste, definitely get this one.

bbq sticky pork ribs
price: $30
taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜
the meat was tender and easily came off of the bones. the sticky bbq sauce was a classic for pork ribs. this dish certainly didn’t disappoint.

ubud crispy duck
price: $33
taste: 🌝🌝
this one was also not my favourite. the duck was again, too salty. it was the only flavour in that dish. the meat was tender and the skin was crispy, but it was lacking flavour other than salty.

cendol panna cotta
price: $13
taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝
saw this interesting combination on the menu. the ice cream was really good, and complemented the panna cotta well. it might be too sweet for some people, but i personally liked it. it was the perfect end to the meal.

makan served simple indonesian dishes. i feel like it needs more variety of flavour. however, it was still a great place if you want a taste of indonesian dishes. i personally think that it needs more variety of flavour in all of the dishes.
