named after penang island in malaysia, little penang offers authentic malaysian cuisine in the heart of wellington. looking for a warm & filling hot meal for a casual lunch, my partner and i enjoyed our first time at little penang this weekend.

on our visit, about 1pm on a saturday afternoon, little penang was busy and crowded as always. however, the restaurant is spacious and accommodates many tables for guests, which adds to the vibrant and lively atmosphere. to me, the decor is rather plain, and if they had dim lighting, candles, and a cocktail menu, i would also love to come here for a classy dinner or date night.

the food selection features a variety of meats and vegetables with different sauces & curries, which are all displayed in a cabinet at the front. i chose one labelled 'mild vegetable', served with rice, adding a turmeric chicken drumstick. along with a drink, charlie's orange & mango honest fizz, the three came to $19.30.

my mild vegetablecurrydish served vegetables including carrots, potatoes, tofu, and mushrooms, while also being served with cucumber, egg, and the most deliciously flavoured peanuts. i absolutely loved them and wish i could simply order a dish with the peanuts and rice. overall, i enjoyed my vegetables and rice - there was a pleasant and tasty variety served in generous portions. my turmeric chicken drumstick was average; it was enjoyable but could've been more flavoursome and tender.

my partner chose the mild chickencurrydish and added a pork bun, spending $15.80. he had the pork bun first and liked the texture because it was baked, as well as the delicious pork inside. he chose noodles to be served with his chicken and thought they complemented each other well; he loved the mildly spiced chicken that wasn't too hot, thecurryit was drenched in and the overall flavours. while he enjoyed the chicken he thought it was a little dry.

overall, a great first experience at little penang. the restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the food is very wholesome, homely, and nourishing. i'd highly recommend little penang if you crave delicious and authentic malaysian cuisine that is simple and affordable.

we went to this place yesterday. we were excited to see that they have pisang goreng which is banana fritters in the menu. when the waiter brought out the meal it was black colour. i told him this is burnt i can’t eat that so he took it back. few minutes later another lady came back literally force me to take it. she told me that is normal. the chef have to cook it for a long time otherwise the dough will not be cooked. then i showed her the photo that was posted at their home page. it was golden brown just like a normal fried fritters. she told me those photos are edited. i told her then you are posting something that is not real. that is a scam. so, they have been getting away with making customers eating burnt food. i told her i’m not eating burnt food and asked to change tocurrypuff which is the same value. she still refused and literally told me to eat that black thing. so to give her the benefit of doubt, i tried it. as i cut into the black charcoal thing is still sticky and raw batter inside i took one bite and tasted burnt and sticky raw dough.i took it back to show her finally she decided to take it back. this whole drama went on for at least 15-20mins which means my other dishes has gone cold. what a bad experience. a word of advice don’t sell something that you can’t do well. not too sure if they deserve a rating of 1.

the rice for the nasi lemak was too moist and sticky. thecurrykapitan and nyonya is good. overall good food. can consider coming back. lobak is delicious though looks a bit burnt. slightly over-rated at 4.8. but still definitely 4 and above stars.

a cozy place to eat on a rainy friday night. at first glance the place looks small and packed but we were seated quickly. despite the chaoticness of the end of the week, bad weather and mass amount of people waiting, the staff never failed to provide such friendly service with patience.

the food came out promptly, fresh and hot.
the nasi lemak can be ordered as a "quick meal combo" that came with your choice of a side. we chose the mango salad for one set and the vegetable fritter for the other (i think the vegetable fritter might not be available as an option for a side now but hopefully it will be again).

the nasi lemak served here is distinctive and not like what you'd normally see at other malaysian restaurants. usually to be half a hard boiled egg instead a piece of fried egg is served. the sambal sauce here looked and tasted more like some sort of chutney (though i could be wrong). the rice was a bit too rich for my liking and contained too much obvious solidified coconut cream chunks in it.
the sides of mango salad and vegetable fritter was absolutely delicious! and rarely seen on malaysian restraurant menus. the salad was light and fresh and the vegetable fritter was crunchy and crispy without being oily. thecurrypuffs and teh tarik is always a good companion to go with any mains. the teh tarik came out hot, just what was needed on a wet night and smooth and creamy without being too sweet.

overall, little penang was a fantastic experience to try a different version of nasi lemak. the restaurant is a comfy place that really makes you feel at home.

little penang is a great spot for some cheap and cheery malay food. the teh tarik is amazing, highly recommend getting a mug of that with your meal. the nyonya starter platter is a great way to try a few different entrees. you cant go wrong with any of the mains really. i've tried theircurryand roti, the otak-otak, char kway teow and nasi goreng and it's all good, so i think its safe to say they're probably all good! just look out for the spice level. i always ask for mild because i cant handle spice, but i've had friends who have ordered medium spice and its hotter than they were expecting.

on a short visit to wellington and stumbled upon this lil gem. it was quite busy and we were very fortunate to get a seat as they filled up very fast.
the food was pretty good. we ordered the nasi lamak and nasi goreng. it took a while to flag down the waitresses but it was understandable as they were very busy. after ordering, it took around 15 min for the food to come out. thecurryin nasi lamak was quite flavourful with a tinge of spicy. the lemon grass chicken which came with both dishes was juicy and tender. the nasi goreng was very flavourful. overall a pretty good, and very filling experience.
