i can see why limones is one of the more popular restaurants in asheville. considering that we didn't have a reservation - we didn't think we needed one since it was in the middle of the week - our timing was impeccable as a reservation was cancelled just moments after we walked in. themenuwas intriguing and interesting, the decor and ambiance was upscale old south, and about the only thing that was sort of out of kilter was the rather indifferent attitude of our server that evening. my food came out a good two to three minutes before my wife and there was no explanation as to why that happened. other than that, we felt our experience at limones was top notch and it was one of the better places we ate at during our trip to asheville.

limones is a mexican restaurant, but on weekends they serve up a mouth-watering mexican-inspired brunch. (yes, those are churros with a cup of hot chocolate pictured above!) they have some brunch classics, like the scone pictured below, but they also have a comprehensivemenuof unique brunch dishes. i ordered the three cheese chile relleno with two fried eggs, home fries, guacamole, creme, and cascabel sauce (see final picture below). i loved  it. i’d eat it again right now if i could. you should go eat it. seriously. go!

hash tagged. taking a short stroll around the block helped wipe away most of the 20 minute wait they had forecast for us and we found ourselves seated shortly thereafter. it was a bit of a nuthouse, being brunch and all, but it wasnt overbearing or obnoxious and we were able to talk our usual junk without raising our volume, which was a plus. themenuwe were given is not the same brunchmenuthey have posted on their website, so we had to start from scratch, but there were still plenty of delicious sounding items to ponder over. in the end i went with a short rib hash with scrambled eggs. my poor wife, who has been on a mission to find a place that offers hash browns, rather than the obligatory homefries, almost lost her mind when she discovered the hashbrown quesadilla towards the bottom of the menu. it goes without saying what direction she went in. once it was all taken down we pecked at our pretty goddamn expensive margaritas. they were nice, but not for the price ($10-12 each)
anyhow, we shot the breeze, remarked on the decor (which we liked), chased the plates coming out of the kitchen with our eyes and all of that stuff. and finally, it was our turn. nomity nom nom. i made sure to mix a little of the pico, salsa cruda and smoked chili crema into every bite. as i suspected, it paid dividends. the short ribs couldve been a tad more tender/juicy but that borders on nitpicking. overall, this was a wonderful bowl of food. i tried not to dispose of it too quickly, but cant claim to have made much of an effort. my wife had on a sad face. her hashbrown quesadilla turned out to be a homefry quesadilla. she quietly cursed the breakfast gods but then moved on and was quickly remarking on all the different flavors and textures in the chayote epazote salsa and marcona cucumber relish. also, we both thought the scrambled eggs were perfect in every regard.
though completely different beasts, i would certainly rank this brunch up with early girl in terms of quality, perhaps even a bit higher. with so many other places on our brunch wishlist it will probably be a while before we return. but the experience will linger in our minds long after the last jalapeno is hatched. i know, that doesnt make any sense, but ive got peppers on my palette.
grade: a- (i dont know if i can get used to the idea of paying the same price for my cocktail as i am for my entree, but im trying)

please dwell in possiblity. we love limones and go there for anniversaries, etc., recommending it to others regularly. sunday i suggested brunch there and was so disappointed to find not only no vegan option, but the chef refused to substitute beans, fingerling potatoes, kale, etc. for eggs & cheese. now that i eat low fat vegan (like bill clinton), apparently i am no longer recognized at brunch by my favorite restaurant! apparently there is a vegan choice at dinner. and there were things on themenuthat could have been put together that i would have loved to eat. the chef just wouldn't fulfill my request because it couldn't be rung up in the cash register options. in asheville. they said they don't get but a couple of requests for vegan a week (i know they would get more if they offered it, but it is clear they do not want to encourage that sort of diner). so my husband ate, while i walked down to the food co-op. things change, and i know there are going to be more healthy choices...just wish that limones would expand their consciousness and their heart to include all who choose to eat there.

flying under the radar. for some reason, this restaurant does not get the same amount of hype from the local papers as other high-end eateries in asheville; this may be because they do not need the hype, either way limones deserves it. limones makes the best mojito in town. everything was cooked perfectly. out party sampled a variety of small plates and main dishes, and everyone left satisfied. themenuchanges weekly. perfect place to take guests or celebrate a special occasion.

spoiled rotten. chef/owner hugo ramirez spoils us as soon as we walk in. the smells from the kitchen and the ever flowing cocktails wash over you as soon as you walk through the door. the idea of eating our way through themenuwith a crowd of us tasting everything coming to the table is our idea of heaven! travelers from neighboring areas may have the gumption to eat dinner somewhere else...but dessert is hugo's bread pudding. stop by and have a mexican adventure, with wonderful atmosphere and amazing service.

great drinks, good and great food, great service. nice atmosphere, great friendly service, great interesting drinks (although i am not such a fan of the crushed ice), really fun extensive small platemenuand interesting, ethnic fusion dishes. not really mexican but i am not complaining. lobster nachos: where is the lobster, i dont know but they were still really good, ceviche: great flavor and the tortilla chips rock. empenadas: nice and light, goof flavors, but still a little doughy. truffle mac and cheese with rabbit sausage: absolutely fantastic. calamari; cuts way off...tough and sauce was oxidized. entrees: jerk pork w/sweet potato-chorizo hash: overcooked pork, no color on potatoes and jerk tasted like harissa but still good. lamb: polenta overcooked and watery, fresh favas, lamb was beautiful, nice sauce...good not great, mint clashed and tomatoes were misused. finished with very tasty bread pudding with burnt caramel and pumpkin ice cream. i really enjoyed this place even though all the food had some misses. i will go back when i crave a chili fix. lots of choices, good vegetarian dishes and some plain dishes for those who cant handle the heat.

i love limones. we have eaten here every year when visiting asheville and have really enjoyed it. i recognize the staff from years before. i like theirmenuand the latin influences. goat cheese epanadas are one of my favorite starters. freshly flavored margaritas are always refreshing. can't go wrong with dessert here from their pot of coco and the little gratas truffle served with their coffee.
