lilotang is like a hidden gem in the heart of the city. amazing customer service and i’d simply go again just for that. they don’t have an elaborate menu, so we tried half the menu at the very first visit and the ensured they delivered the perfect dishes. it’s an excellent choice for that quirkyrestaurantyou pick for a date.

a very cool japanese fusionrestaurantlocated right opposite to where we stayed at the hotel realm. the staff (we had zack the whole evening) were all v friendly. love their recommendation and later on found out it’s under the same owner as the really yummy and popular chineserestaurantin hk (dai pan lau). highly recommended this place and i would definitely come back! i loved the sushi and sashimi pick as well, hard to order such a different kind of fish from anywhere in aust!

busy japaneserestaurantjust right for the discerning diner passing staying at the doma hotels or anyone living in canberra. i had the beautifully grilled cauliflower and hot steaming pot of assorted vegetable sukiyaki for dinner during my 6 weeks of vegan challenge. keen attentive waiting staff. only downside is that there aren’t too many dishes for “plant pests”.

my friend and i came here because of its reputation and popularity. maybe we had too much expectations but it didn't surprised us. it doesn't mean the food was bad. sashimi plate was very delicious and served in delicate way. the grilled fish was yummy with special sauce and the dessert was pretty good. anyway i will recommend it to whom has not tried ever. but i will look for much better janpaneserestaurantwhich will be beyond expectation.

if a sophisticated, intimate night out filled with delicious, flavoursome food and top service is what you’re after then lilotang is the place for you. this fine-dining japaneserestaurantis located in barton at the burbury hotel apartments. the atmosphere, decor, food and service combined guarantees a great night. with fresh flavours yummy dishes on offer lilotang needs to go on your 'to eat' list while in canberra. we went with the tasting menu that included 8 dishes for $85. more photos and a few review can be found on eatcanberra.com.au

never again!
the food was fine, although the portions were small. the service from the wait staff was fine.

our problem was with the manager. we sat down and ordered before my wife and her friend went looking for the bathroom. on the way, they stopped to ask the manager. his response? "are you eating at this restaurant?" rude? yes. confused? yes, so we're we. why else would someone look for a bathroom in a restaurant.

our second issue with the manager was when we were presented with the bill. rice on the menu was quoted "p.p." most people expect that this to mean "per person". on questioning the bill, the manager claimed it was "per piece". ridiculous when most items on a menu are charged per item by default! we eat at asian restaurants often and rice is often charged per person. after plenty of arguing, he agreed to fix the bill. customer service meant nothing to thisrestaurantmanager!

after the exceptional meal of 2015, i couldn't leave canberra without one final booking. thisrestaurantthoroughly deserved the one chef hat accolade in their first year and i was excited to come back especially after re-reading my previous review.

during my recent work trip to canberra, i stayed at the burbury, a boutique hotel in barton. the hotel is part of the realm precinct which conveniently is also home to a number of restaurants. lilotang is a modern japaneserestaurantwith a menu that is a mix between fine dining and izakaya.

pronunciation: li|lo|tang (lee-l’oh-tang)

a quirky little japaneserestaurantat the bottom of burberry hotel in barton – little known, but well worth the trip. a derivative of kaiseki and izakaya dining styles, lilotang serves up an eclectic mix of japanese flavours that showcases aspects of japanese cuisine that are seldom explored.

the chairman group has been one of canberra’s hospitality mainstays over the last two decades. since opening in 1992, the iconic chairman & yiprestaurantin civic has been serving up refined yet honest cantonese food, attracting a loyal following of politicians and suits along the way. in 2008, the group (headed by josiah li) added the lanterne rooms to their stable, followed by malamay in 2012; and both restaurants have been great successes.

another upmarking japanese fusion restaurant. worthwhile a try. we are glad that last few years canberra has opened up quite a number of modern fusion restaurants. there is a similar fusion japaneserestaurantin the city, akiba. we prefer lilotang. this is another chairman & yip group restaurant. it's upmarket but casual. deco was modern and spacious. service was wonderful. as for food, as previous review indicated, it's innovative, it's elegant and it's tasty. we ordered tasting menu and every dish was wonderful. it was a pleasant evening for a special occasion.

lilotang is a hip new japanese eatery that has opened in canberra’s hotel burbury. although the food pays homage to traditional japanese cuisine, therestauranthas a young vibe with lots of references to japanese anime and pop culture, an eight-metre bar and lounge seating. josiah li, who has opened lilotang with the help of po yang chia, already operates malamay in the hotel burbury, the chairman & yip in downtown canberra and the lanterne rooms in suburban campbell. li says lilotang has a younger vibe than the other chairman establishments, and indeed it does a great job of straddling the divide between casual and formal.

last friday, i headed down to barton after work to check out the newly opened lilotang restaurant. lilotang comes to us from the chairman group, which also looks after some other fantastic restaurants from around canberra, including chairman and yip, lanterne rooms and malamay. when i first heard that the chairman group was looking to open a japanese restaurant, i was super excited but also a little hesitant. i absolutely love japanese food, its probably my favourite cuisine and i’ve probably complained the ears off everyone about how i think canberra completely lacks in good japanese restaurants. there are a few decent ones, but we could definitely do with a couple more! so i was super excited to see another japaneserestaurantcome to town. however, at the same time, i wasn’t sure that the chairman group could pull it off, they’ve never done japanese food before as they seem to focus quite heavily on chinese food.
